The Geography of Memory

The Geography of Memory

Directed by Mary Trunk
The Geography of Memory explores impermanence and the impulse to preserve what will be erased.

Overview

Synopsis

The Geography of Memory is an ongoing, multidisciplinary project exploring how memory lives in the body and shapes the way we move. Drawing from archival footage gathered over two decades alongside dance, choreography, and contemporary video, the work examines the reciprocal relationship between recollection and gesture and how past experiences inform movements that feel joyful, painful, or familiar.

Presented across evolving formats, including short-form videos, installations, and site-responsive screenings, the project treats memory as fluid and impermanent. Everyday actions are transformed into a poetic visual language, reflecting our desire to preserve what time and nature inevitably erase: stories, bodies, and fleeting moments that continue to shape the present.
