Video from Ben Carre': A Parisian In Hollywood

Biography, Culture, and History

The story of a legendary French Scenic Artist and Art Director, whose amazing career played an essential part in the evolution of the movie art form from its infancy in 1900 in Paris to the great movie studios in Hollywood’s Golden Age, and how he came to be called “the first true artist of American film.”

Ben’s career started in Paris at a scenic studio painting backdrops for the great theatres and opera houses of London and Paris, just as the new art form of motion pictures was becoming popular. In 1906 he joined the Gaumont movie company and worked closely with Mme. Alice Guy, the first woman producer/director in film, and the first of many iconic people in the film industry with whom he would collaborate – people like Mary Pickford, Cecil B. DeMille, Douglas Fairbanks, Howard Hawks, Alla Nazimova, Raoul Walsh, Allan Dwan, Michael Curtiz.
