Hungry is the Tiger

Directed by Mitch Levine
An exploration of the world food crisis and the White Revolution in India and Indonesia.

Overview

Synopsis

Weaving together interviews from the front lines of the world's food crisis and the voices of the Indonesian and Indian people – and with the cooperation of such organizations as UNICEF, the World Food Program, CARE International, AMUL and others – the film tells its story through both traditional documentary film techniques and wayang shadow puppet performance, presented to an Indonesian village by the reigning avant-garde master of this ancient Javanese performing art. It features narration by the great Indonesian actress, Christine Hakim, and includes both traditional and contemporary Indian and Indonesian music and a special song by Patti Smith. The film is presented in Bahasa Indonesian, Gujarati and English and chronicles how farmers in Indonesia, women in India and poor families in the developing world can feed themselves: so that countries like Indonesia – a country that can’t feed itself despite a perfect growing climate and abundant natural resources – can sustain themselves.
