Synopsis

Manthan means churning. It draws from the Kumbh Mela myth in which gods and demons churn the ocean to bring forth amrita, the nectar of immortality, spilled at four sacred sites - one of which is the filmmaker’s hometown. At the confluence of its sacred rivers, the Kumbh Mela in India is one of the largest human gatherings in the world, where people flock, seeking purification and a release from suffering.
The filmmakers try to find ways to express their experiences and their own inner churning: in their conversations with each other, and through their craft - Rangoli through her camera and Devraj through the soundscapes he encounters and recreates. Against the backdrop of the Kumbh Mela, their journey becomes a meditation on impermanence, grief, and humanity at large.
