People of the West

People of the West is a ten-part premium documentary series that reclaims the history of California through Indigenous perspectives, placing Native voices at the center of a story long told without them.

Each episode is anchored in a pivotal moment—first contact, the mission system, the Gold Rush, state-sanctioned violence, boarding schools, relocation, Alcatraz, and modern sovereignty movements. Rather than presenting history as distant or inevitable, the series unfolds through lived experience: Native families, leaders, and communities navigating systems designed to erase them, while preserving culture, identity, and connection to land.

The storytelling blends oral histories, tribal archives, expert insight, and cinematic recreations. Carefully staged reenactments bring historical moments to life with emotional immediacy, while maps and visual sequences situate events within California’s geography—coast, valley, desert, and mountains—treating the land itself as a central character.
