“Saving The Ice” is a compelling documentary that explores the rich history, triumphs, and challenges faced by the legendary Philadelphia Skating Club. Spanning several decades, the documentary reveals how the iconic institution has shaped the lives of its members, transforming them into world-class athletes and fostering a sense of community.

The club was established in 1849, when The Humane Society of Philadelphia and the Skater’s Club of the City and County of Philadelphia joined forces. The club’s mission focuses on “instruction and improvement” in the art of skating, cultivation of friendship among the skaters and the rescue of people who fell through the ice. Not only advancing the sport of ice-skating, but also a nurturing sense of camaraderie and providing opportunities for young skaters to achieve their dreams. The documentary dives deep into the history and the architecture of the club. The building was designed by European-born architect Anton Tedesco with a roof less than three inches thick, about the thickness of a baseball.

Two of the most famous competitors who skated at the club are Dick Button (North American, European, World and Olympic Champion) and Scott Hamilton (National, World and Olympic Champion). Scott Hamilton shares his journey as an Olympic Ice Skater, the ups and downs, intense pressure, sacrifices and triumphs he experienced along the way.

Various members and skaters are interviewed throughout the documentary showcasing the close-knit community fostered over the years at The Philadelphia Skating Club. The club has evolved over the years and is constantly adapting to changing trends within the sport. The club has embraced new techniques, equipment and technologies while preserving its tradition and values.
