Synopsis

Fighter chronicles the effort of 100% disabled veteran and former Army boxing champion Darrell “Smitty” Smith to save at risk youth in his medium sized Midwestern city of Springfield, Missouri. Like other communities across the nation, Springfield is in the grips of a drugs and crime crisis. Seeing the devastation of drugs, poverty, and crime in his community, Coach Smitty developed a program modeled on the Boys Club boxing program of his youth and his experience in the Army to create a no nonsense boxing program aimed at getting kids off the street and involved in supervised sport. In 2012 Coach Smitty used his Army pension to set up and equip a 501c3 nonprofit boxing gym in North Springfield, one of the most blighted sections of town.
In just six short years ,his gym has produced Olympic hopefuls, professional fighters and numerous Golden Gloves champions, but more importantly for Smitty, high school and college graduates with ahope for a future.
