Bio

Juan Baquero is a Toronto based director, editor and producer. In 2007 he was selected as a Quebecor Documentary Program Fellow and took part in Hot Docs’ director’s lab. In 2008, he was chosen to participate in the OMDC/DOC Mentorship program at Hot Docs. Listen to This!, his debut Canadian feature length documentary -commissioned by TVO and Bravo- premiered at Hot Docs International Documentary Festival to great acclaim. The film explores the influence of music as a creative outlet for kids living in the inner city. Before moving to Canada, Juan worked in Colombia, South America, where he created, directed and produced original TV programming. Juan holds a B.S. degree in telecommunications from the University of Florida and a Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School. He also studied film production in Australia. Currently, Juan is developing several films, including Hockey in the Hood, another feature length documentary about an inner city hockey team. He teaches the Introduction to Documentary workshop at LIFT and collaborates with other filmmakers as a story consultant. Most recently, Juan joined Hot Docs’ 2011 festival team as an associate international programmer. He also serves on the board of directors of POV Magazine.
