Bio
Jack I. Lerner is Clinical Professor of Law at the UC Irvine School of Law and Director of the UCI Intellectual Property, Arts, and Technology Clinic, where law students work to support innovation and creative expression in the digital age through a range of counseling, research, and advocacy services. Professor Lerner received a B.A. from the University of Kansas and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. Professor Lerner is a nationally known expert on fair use; he and his students regularly advocate on behalf of documentary and independent filmmakers in amicus briefs and regulatory proceedings, and counsel and represent filmmakers and others on fair use issues. Professor Lerner served on the Legal Advisory Board for the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Scholarly Research in Communication, and the Set of Principles in Fair Use for Journalism. He is a Director of the International Documentary Association and a Trustee of the Los Angeles Copyright Society.
