Bio
Andy Ball is a documentary cinematographer and director with a focus on character-driven and investigative films on human rights and environmental issues in Southeast Asia. His latest project, Before They Take Me Away, chronicles the struggles of young Cambodian environmentalists facing imprisonment for their activism. His investigative work ranges from exposing the ties between major fashion brands and deforestation to documenting illegal fishing practices off the Cambodian coast.
Over the past seven years, Andy has collaborated with numerous international documentary clients in both cinematography and producing roles, including the BBC, CBS, South China Morning Post, ABC, Insider, and Mongabay. His still photography has been featured in The New York Times, dpa, and Coda Story. He also works closely with non-profits like Human Rights Watch, Global Witness, Equitable Cambodia, and Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust.
Andy has an MSci degree in marine biology from the University of Southampton, UK, where he earned a merit scholarship and secured a spot in their study abroad program at James Cook University, Australia, for one year. Having lived in Cambodia for the past five years, he is well-versed in shooting in remote locations and speaks conversational Khmer. He is open to assignments both regionally and globally.
