could do a list of the favorite films of d-worders – a doc filmmakers list of films for doc lovers – based on the multiple lists and recommends we've all made over the years.

Has anyone suggested the feature of allowing registered users of this site to send msgs to each other? The general format of the topics board here is kinda new to me and I'm still trying to get used to it. But the tagging feature helps a lot!

if you fill out your profile we have access to your email address for private messages.

I love the new D-Word and its simplicity has really helped me get more involved. Thanks to everyone for all of the incredible work that went into this new platform!

I do have a question/possible feature request. Is there a way for me to use one e-mail address to receive my e-mail digest from D-word but then to a display a different e-mail in my profile? This would be convenient as I'm guessing that, like me, many people have multiple e-mail addresses and use some for list subscriptions, some for business contact, etc.

Functionally, I guess this would mean that instead of having the option under "settings" to hide e-mail address, there would be two options: one to hide primary e-mail address and another to hide "other" e-mail address.

Thanks for your proposal, Robert.

Does anyone else see the need for this?

Matt Dubuque
Wed 23 Jan 2008Link

Ben, that would be useful (but not esssential) for me also.

I would also like a feature where I could be permanently logged in at all times, i.e. where your server would remember my IP address.

But again, these are not critical isues. It's an awesome site and I'd love to earn my membership soon!

Ben Kempas
Wed 23 Jan 2008Link

Log-in to The D-Word is cookie-based, not IP-based.

But we can throw a "keep me logged in" option onto the feature list if people want this. However, all modern browsers offer to remember log-in details for you, so the proposed feature is not really a necessity these days, is it?

Erica Ginsberg
Thu 24 Jan 2008Link

Vis-a-vis, Robert B's request: Maybe I missed something, but what is the e-mail digest? Is this a new feature where there's a summary of all the postings of the day? Or is this just like the old "notify me of postings following mine" option from the Utne days. Personally I don't feel like I get so many postings from D-Word that I would need to have a separate e-mail account for them. But if it's not a problem to implement this change for folks who would want it, sure why not.

On permanent logins, again I don't feel strongly about it, though it would be nice. When I'm using Firefox at home, it remembers the log-in details. At work, I'm using Explorer and it doesn't remember them (maybe b/c oursets us to not remember cookies, but I'm not sure – it remembers my Gmail login automatically). If permanent login is an option, It would still be good to have an easy way to sign in and out. I never figured out how to do that with Utne and, as a result, visiting D-Worders to my home couldn't log me out and re-log-in as themselves to post stuff.

Ben Kempas
Thu 24 Jan 2008Link

Email digests can be selected at the bottom of each Topic or on the My Topics page. You'll receive the new postings in the selected Topics by email rather than by logging in. Not just a notification.

As for logging out, you had to close the browser with Cafe Utne (one of previous platforms). Now, you can just use the Log out on the top right of every page.

David Herman
Mon 28 Jan 2008Link

excuse me. What happened to archives and file store – like releases etc?

Ben Kempas
Mon 28 Jan 2008Link

Not sure what you mean with archives. Archived topics are all with us.

Not sure what you mean with file store either. The Resources page hosted by an inactive member? If so, we never had any releases on there, just some sample budgets and proposals that are pretty much out of date now. As soon as our previous platform allowed us to post attachments, there was no need for separate hosting any more. You're the first one to miss these files.

Erica Ginsberg
Mon 28 Jan 2008Link

Just b/c we haven't posted like David, doesn't mean there aren't others who miss them as well. It's nice to have resources in one fixed place. But I suppose the fix is to do a search on "release forms" or "releases" and create a tag if some smart soul hasn't done so already.

Ben Kempas
Tue 29 Jan 2008Link

Exactly. :-)

Ryan Ferguson
Wed 30 Jan 2008Link

I love the customizing abilities of the new D-Word format, but, and I may be the lone moron who has this problem, I have accidentally hid topics probably ten times while trying to go back to topics list. I've noticed and fixed it immediately about 9 of those times, but at least once, I didn't realize for like a week that I was missing a topic. I guess I'm not even sure why someone would hide topics in the first place. Maybe put the option in a different place where I don't accidentally click on it. Of course, if I'm the only one, than... well, don't worry about it, I just need to work on my mouse skills.

Ben Kempas
Wed 30 Jan 2008Link

It has happened to others, too. I think we just need a bigger space between the two links.

Sarah George
Sun 3 Feb 2008Link

i'm an oldtimer still adjusting to the new interface...
is there a way to page thru topic like before? ie, i start at the top and then just keep clicking thru all postings in all topics until i'm done?

Ben Kempas
Sun 3 Feb 2008Link

Yes, Sarah, the "Read xx new postings..." link at the top left of the list of Topics will take you on a cruise through all Topics. To get from one to the next, click on "Read next Topic with new postings..." at the bottom of all Topic pages.
Is that what you meant?

Doug Block
Sun 3 Feb 2008Link

Ben beat me to it, Sarah. It's the same method of navigating new posts as it used to be, just in a different place.

Ben, why are you Ashamed?

David Herman

Laura Moire Paglin
Mon 25 Feb 2008Link

For those of us who are vain, how we get around showing our age in the profile section? I tried to get rid of mine (or at least change it to a more desirable age), but it didn't give me any options (in fact the most recent birth date I could select was 1973), so I opted for being born in 1900 – which makes me 107.

Boyd McCollum
Tue 26 Feb 2008Link

Laura, if you check my profile, you'll see that I won't be born for 5 more years. January 1st, 2013 to be exact – I want to be the first child born after the end of the current Maya calendar. (I'm guessing they, whoever the great and wonderful "they" is, updated the pulldown menu in the edit profile section per your suggestion)

Laura Moire Paglin
Thu 28 Feb 2008Link

In reply to Boyd Mccollum's post on Tue 26 Feb 2008 :

I dunno – I've kind of gotten used to my senior age but being could also have benifits –- all those documentaries yet to be born...

Ben Kempas
Fri 29 Feb 2008Link

That's weird – it only seems to allow for the year that was set originally plus the following five years.

I think we can officially confirm this as a bug. :-)

Ben Kempas
Fri 29 Feb 2008Link

I've been informed that the server hosting The D-Word had a brief outage from 00:39 GMT today. I hope nobody was affected by this. Apologies if you were.

Peter Gerard
Sat 1 Mar 2008Link

I'm looking into the birthdate bug...

And just to let everyone know, our host is going to move our server as a precaution against another outage. So the site will be down for about 5 to 10 minutes sometime between 05:00 and 0:700 GMT on Monday 3 March. Apologies again, but this should cause minimal disturbance and will insure further stability.

Peter Gerard
Sat 1 Mar 2008Link

Those of you concerned about celebrating the wrong birthday can now adjust your profile and rest at ease. I fixed the bug and it will now let you choose any age between 12 and 100. If your age falls outside of those bounds, please let me know and I'll expand the options.

Lenville O'Donnell
Fri 21 Mar 2008Link

Fearless Leaders:
I have a request. It would be nice to be able to spell my last name correctly here on the mighty D. One is not allowed to have an apostrophe (and probably hyphen or any other common symbol used in names), and it's not permitted to have two capital letters in one word. I'm sure there are a few other D-Mc's, Mac's, or O'Whatevers who would also appreciate. I suppose I could simply sign each and every post, spelling it correctly. But the D-Cops wouldn't like that....
Very Truly Yours,
Lenville O'Donnell

Ben Kempas
Sat 22 Mar 2008Link

Lenville, this will be fixed with the next update of our software.

Lenville O'Donnell
Sat 22 Mar 2008Link

Okey doke... thanks!

Boyd McCollum
Sat 22 Mar 2008Link

Lenville, I just figured it was jealousy, that they didn't want us to have too much pride – kinda like "Hey Laddie, why should you get to have 2 capitals letters in your name?" But alas, it's only a software thing...

Edited Sat 22 Mar 2008 by Boyd McCollum

Ben Kempas
Sat 22 Mar 2008Link

Lenville O'Donnell
Sat 22 Mar 2008Link

Wow, thanks, Ben! And it didn't hurt a bit...

Boyd McCollum
Sat 22 Mar 2008Link

or M'CCollum. Wow, that'd be 3 capital letters in my name. And an apostrophe. I feel like a Scots-Irish-Vulcan!

Ben Kempas
Sat 22 Mar 2008Link

Well, apologies to Vulcan and everyone affected by this. I hate it when names are messed with. Peter will fix this ASAP.

Boyd McCollum
Sat 22 Mar 2008Link

No worries Ben (at least for me), considering how good this site is, this is the equivalent of fine tuning/polishing an edit. Now can you imagine what would happen if you made the name field editable like the location?

Btw, many thanks to you and Peter for the continued work that you put in on the site. Very much appreciated!

Peter Gerard
Sat 22 Mar 2008Link

It's fixed now. I don't know how Ben snuck that apostrophe through four hours ago...

But this change leaves it in our own hands to judge how to capitalize our own names....

Ben Kempas
Mon 24 Mar 2008Link

That's pretty cool. I already corrected Boyd's name. (As for the others, please do it yourselves! Just promise not to give us ALL CAPS, OK?)

Lenville O'Donnell

I've just made another wee upgrade. I will make a major upgrade next week.

I will post info about planned downtime soon.

Thanks for your patience!

Peter Gerard
Tue 13 May 2008Link

OK, I apologize for the long period of downtime today. We had a server emergency this morning which required me to move the entire site to a new server. This took longer than I expected, but it has great benefits. I ended up doing next week's major upgrade today!

The server software has been updated to the latest versions and we are using some new and efficient technologies that will speed things along on The D-Word. Enjoy!

Jo-Anne Velin

Thanks Peter, and though I haven't conducted a poll, this probably mirrors the appreciation of the full stable...! (By the way, it does feel faster).

Ben Kempas
Tue 13 May 2008Link

It does feel much, much faster now, doesn't it? (But maybe that's because those people who usually spend their whole day on The D-Word simply couldn't log on during the downtime.)

Ben Kempas
Tue 13 May 2008Link

Turns out it takes a bit longer for some people to get back on... This is because the new server for d-word.com needs to be propagated around the net first. No need to worry, and nothing has been lost! Good night...

Peter Gerard

If you're having trouble with DNS propagation (meaning you can't access d-word.com or www.d-word.com), you can try changing your computer's DNS servers.

Try OpenDNS for a free alternative to your ISP's DNS:

Thu 15 May 2008Link

Hi, I have noticed that other people have more than one URL listed under website on their profile. I too have several URLs that I think would interest the community. How can I do this?

Ben Kempas
Thu 15 May 2008Link

There's a field "Other website" when you're editing your profile.

Also, you can just put URLs into your bio.

Jason Osder
Thu 15 May 2008Link

I don't get that field – is it only for members? I'm planning to apply to be a member, but wanted to get my profile together first.

Ben Kempas
Thu 15 May 2008Link

I don't actually know... but I can assure you that the number of websites won't determine eligibility for membership... :-)

In reply to Christopher Wong's post on Tue 13 May 2008 :

Yeah, I had the same experience as you, with the "It Works!" page. Likewise, I eventually typed in the complete URL and got in. Just out of curiosity, what was that page anyway?

I'm still getting occasional "bad response from server" messages and the pages are often very slow to load. Will look into Opendns.com...

Doug Block
Fri 16 May 2008Link

Appears that problem is fixed, Mikal. I had it, too. Peter will come on sometime soon and explain. Anyway, the pages should load now with lightening speed.

Doug, you know, the funny thing is that just after I made that last post, I couldn't get in at all. I had wanted to add a thank you note to Peter and the hosts for keeping this great site together. So, there, thanks!

P.S., seems to be working fine for me now. Yes, "It Works!" indeed.

One of which seems to have built a web in the little bit of code that resets the already-read topic lists when I click on Topics. Was that clear? Here: I read the new posts in a topic, click Topics, but when the Topics page comes up, the topic I just looked at still has the circle with the number of unread posts in it. Just so you know...

I don't understand how the posting works on this site. It's impossible to follow any thread or specific question. It's just one giant heap of responses, but how do I track those responses to the original question? The main topic page is well organized, but if I go to any section, all I see is hundreds of pages of responses with no way to find any of the information I'm looking for. If I'm using the site incorrectly, please advise.
