Anna, this topic is intended for Help with issues about how the D-Word is running. You should re-post your question in the Mentoring Room
Help, Suggestions, Future of The D-Word
Difficulties with The D-Word? If you can't find the right answers on our Help page, please post in this topic. Ideas for future D-Word releases or projects can be posted here as well.
Actually, you should go ahead and apply for professional membership, then ask the question again in the Editing topic.
Hello,
Will my profile information be searchable on search engines outside of D-Word?
As explained in the privacy note when editing your profile, the fields with the eye symbol will be visible to everyone.
In reply to Ben Kempas's post on Thu 4 Aug 2011 :
Yes, on The D-Word site, but – I am asking about off site search engines – Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.
Troy
Troy, I believe that Google will index that which is "public" on this site.
Yes, Google is included when Ben says "everyone". There's also a feature to preview your public profile. Click on your name at the top of this page where it says "Signed in as Your Name" and then you can click in the blue box to switch to Public Preview view. However, I've just noticed that it's not strictly accurate, since your photos and the links to your posts are only seen by logged in users and NOT by Google... I will fix this in the next site update...
Generally though, Google (and users not logged in) only see your name, your website links, your films, and your "Public Bio".
Apologies for the downtime this morning. This was due to an outage at a data centre. Everything should be back to normal now.
Anybody have a licensing contact at C-SPAN? I've got a bunch of footage that I need to get cleared, and it seems too much for the std form they offer on the website....
Nick, please don't double post. We saw your request already in the Legal topic. Besides, this topic is for help with The D-Word, so pick the ONE topic you'll be posting in carefully.
Sorry, Doug....Wasn't sure which would be appropriate....Elizabeth Westrate suggested I post it in the Research & Archives section, do you concur?
Probably, but I'd leave it in Legal since most will see it there. If you don't get a response within a few days, maybe then re-post in Research.
Trying to add a film to my profile and getting an error message that the Vimeo.com URL is not valid ... not sure why this would be the case ...
It was because our embed generator wasn't expecting the www.
I've updated it now so you should be able to embed with or without the www. from both YouTube or Vimeo.
You could also of course embed via Distrify and get loads of other benefits ;-)
Thanks. The same problem seems to exist elsewhere in the site. For example, I was unable to embed a YouTube video in the Cameras topic although the URL exactly matched the formatting of the example in the error message.
I put in a fix for both YouTube and Vimeo to ignore the www.
Cheers
Hi there –
Does anyone know if I can post my documentary on D-Word if it's a Dynamo Player? Or is Distrify, Vimeo and YouTube the only options?
Faith
We support a wide range of embeds that use the oembed protocol, including Hulu, Flickr, Viddler, and more. As far as I am aware Dynamo does not support this secure and open standard.
Thanks Peter.. so it sounds like the dynamo player won't work here on D-Word.. (right?) (Are you saying Dynamo is not secure?)
I've been meaning to upload it to Distrify anyway..
Thanks so much! I really appreciate the feedback.
Howdy Faith, I couldn't help but respond when I saw your post. We were at FSU together. Sorry I don't have an answer to your question but just wanted to say HI!
I can't speak about the security of Dynamo, but we don't support raw embeds because these are not very secure in a semi-public forum. For a technical explanation see the hidden section...
In reply to Jill Woodward's post on Mon 29 Aug 2011 :
Hi Jill.. WOW.. this is too cool!! Thanks for your message. I checked out your bio and you're doing some really cool stuff. Who knew you were right down the road from me in Atlanta. I hope you're enjoying NY. Thanks again for reaching out! :)
In reply to Peter Gerard's post on Tue 30 Aug 2011 :
Ahhhh... okay, Peter. Makes sense now. Thank you for taking the time to explain.
are we allowed to post are availability and/or services on The D-Word? if so, where?
thanks in advance,
Mike
As a full D-Worder you have two options, Michael – either Professional Classifieds (for other Professionals) or to reach a wider audience Public Classifieds . In fact you can post in both if you wish – the one exception we make to the double posting rule.
Hope I'm not repeating, but haven't found the answer...
I get the digest form of d-word. I've noticed it doesn't include every post from the time since the last digest, sometime half or less. Does this happen to everyone? Is there a fix?
If you've read some posts on the website they are not included in the digest. It only includes posts which are "unread", i.e. the ones that would have blue dots next to them when you come online.
Hmm. I can't tell what's chicken and what's egg. I rarely go to the website except when I think I'm missing something in the digest... But it sounds like anytime I might scroll through a page looking for a post, anything on the open page won't get sent?
If you've opened a topic and have loaded some posts to your browser they are marked as "read". Then those won't show up in your digest. If you want to mark a topic as "unread" click the top right corner of the last post you've read, and then all posts after that will be in your next digest.
Hey Peter.
I am trying embed a vimeo link to the shameless self promotions section. However I cannot get any vimeo links to work, but youtube links are working.
Thoughts? My link is: http://vimeo.com/29625203.
Thanks!
The error message is this:
"Embed is not a valid video URL. Please use a URL of a YouTube, Vimeo or Distrify page. (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmciuKsBOi0)"
I got the same error message yesterday trying to post a YouTube video in the Bar & Grill. Daffy Duck awaits you, sir.
In reply to John Burgan's post on Wed 14 Sep 2011 :
can you elaborate on "double posting"? is there a time limit? i posted my availability back in April. can i post it again after a certain period of time?
thanks in advance,
Mike
Sure, Michael. We mainly mean posting in two or more topics with the same message within a short period of time (say, a few days). You can, of course, get creative with changing the posts so it doesn't feel like double posting, but you didn't hear that from me.
Hey Doug – I'm trying to post a video in "work in progress". I'm posting the vimeo url (not the code) – but I'm getting an error message that says it's not a valid url.
We have been having a problem with Vimeo's embed API. I'm working on a fix and will post here as soon as it's solved!
Uh Oh. The Doc Bar and Grill is doing that thing again where you can't see the last post.
The farmer and I posted at the same time which caused the space-time continuum to implode.
In reply to James Longley's post on Mon 19 Dec 2011 17:12 UTC :
Let's just continue here, I was the last poster unless you posted after me in which case I wasn't the last poster though I keep on getting a message that there is another post after mine and so maybe it was yours. Or not. So where the fuck is Jet City and I have an unopened bottle of Jura awaiting a partner. And then this post wouldn't post because Roth is posting. GET HER OUT OF HERE! Unless she joins us for a Jura (only another $14.99 for you my dear.)
-opening door for Herman-
No, after you.
-waits till Herman is mid-doorframe then squeezes thru at same time-
Maybe I'm dense, but there doesn't seem to be a way to find D-worders by geography. I go to "People" and put in "Boston" or "Massachusetts" as a search term and the only thing that comes up is a guy whose last name is "Boston". Any suggestions?
Try Advanced Search and then put the details in the "Company and Address" box
Re Cameras: Perhaps Deepak Varma, in trying to post his pictures, locked up the topic in some way? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
