We follow these self-appointed watchdogs as they fight to regain their sovereignty as well as their own sanity in an isolated and dangerous landscape. Shot over the course of four years, the film examines the motivations of and relationships between these conflicted patriots.

I’m writing to inform you of an opportunity for emerging documentary artists, called the UnionDocs Collaborative Program. The Brooklyn Rail recently pointed to the success of the first year of this program in an article titled, "UnionDocs Brings Autuers Together," http://www.brooklynrail.org/2010/04/local/uniondocs-brings-auteurs-together ,and we are are quite excited to be opening applications up for six new participants in 2010-2011.
The UnionDocs Collaborative is a one or two-year program; both a rigorous platform for exploring contemporary approaches to the documentary arts, and a process for developing an innovative group project. The program focuses on providing what we believe are the most effective educational resources for individuals at the beginning of their careers:
* Mentorship toward the production of an original work.
* Dynamic interaction among a network of talented peers.
* Direct contact and structured exchange with visiting artists.
* Exposure to a wide variety of practices and models.
* Regular group critique sessions.
* Exposure through a toured exhibition and/or publication of annual project.
The first iteration of this year’s UDC project, "Documenting Mythology,” premiered at Doc Fortnight 2010: The Museum of Modern Art's International Festival of Nonfiction Film, and will be presented in Boston next month by The Sensory Ethnography Lab at Harvard University. A wider international distribution effort and tour is planned for the coming fall.
The UDC has been set up to be affordable and scheduled for individuals who work full-time or freelance. UnionDocs is able to offer an intensive learning experience at a price that one might expect to pay for just a single credit at a university. Some residency options are available for individuals considering moving to the NYC. We will show a rough cut of THE LULU SESSIONS by S. Casper Wong. Raised in a small farm in Vermont, Dr. Louise Nutter, or LuLu, entered college at 15-years old, and by 29, was a star scientist invited to set up the first national cancer research center in Taiwan. The chain-smoking, hard-living, beloved professor has just discovered a new anti-cancer drug when she finds out she is dying of breast cancer herself at 42. Shot during the last 1.5 years of LuLu’s life, the film is a raw, intimate, yet surprisingly humorous story about the filmmaker showing up for her best friend, and together, testing the limits of their bond while taking on life’s ultimate adventure: death.
Director S. Casper Wong is a New York-based writer, director and producer of narrative and documentary films. Her narrative feature screenplay, OO1, a suspense drama, won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Screenplay at Urbanworld Film Festival and two Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Screenwriting Grants – at New York University and the Hamptons International Film Festival Screenwriter’s Lab. Her narrative short film, SHIRTS & SKINS, was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Taipei Film Festival, and was licensed to The Independent Film Channel for a three-year run. It is now part of the Tribeca Film Institute’s curated Reframe Collection. She is currently in production on a feature documentary about East-West integrative medicine and the global health crisis. Prior to receiving her M.F.A. from New York University’s Graduate Film Program, Wong was Senior Counsel for IBM’s Western Region, based in San Francisco, and holds a B.S. in Bio-medical Engineering from Columbia University. THE LULU SESSIONS is her feature documentary debut.
Our moderator will be Howard Weinberg, who helps other filmmakers improve their films as a script-doctor. An award-winning independent documentary filmmaker, he educates and mentors students at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. His PBS documentary credits include SPORTS FOR SALE, FIRST THINGS FIRST, ONE PLUS ONE, and NET.LEARNING. An innovative television journalist, he was a Founding Producer of THE MACNEIL/LEHRER REPORT; Executive Producer of LISTENING TO AMERICA WITH BILL MOYERS; and a producer-writer for SUNDAY MORNING and SIXTY MINUTES, both on the CBS network. He also has taught at New York University and Dartmouth, and created a documentary film series at Columbia. The Daily News called the subject of his film SID AT 90, the “undisputed star” of the 2003 New York Jewish Film Festival. He is president of The New York Film/ Video Council, a non-profit serving the independent media community. His current major documentary project is TV LAB: LICENSE TO CREATE, an educational feature about an innovative era of public television from 1972-1984.

You must be FLUENT in Spanish, Portuguese AND English, and be based in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay or Uruguay.
The job will be very hard work but amazing fun- think, travelling all night, one hour sleep and then interviewing the environment minister of Paraguay before heading off to interview displaced indigenous people and then spending the evening translating it all and discussing/planning the next day.
We are not so interested in finding the person with the most impressive CV but rather looking for someone who will fit the dynamic of the team- young, creative, intelligent and ambitious!

Just a post to let you know about The NOMAD Project, an exhibition to premiere at the 2010 debut of Access & PARADOX, taking place the 21-24 of October 2010 in Paris, France.
The NOMAD Project will be an exhibition of short films directed and/or produced by independent filmmakers utilizing innovative and explorative ways of telling a story. The aim of the exhibition is to share with the contemporary art audience unique ways in which filmmakers are adapting to the stage of the global economy as well as shifts in technology. The films can be narrative, documentary or experimental, and should relate to PARADOX’s unofficial theme “Nostalgia for Nature”.

I've organised lots of great gifts from acknowledgments, online downloads, DVDs, photos, lunch with the UK's leading doc exec producer, a recording session at Premises Studios, one to one sessions in doc filmmaking and camera plus more. Pledges start from $3 (£2).

This is the first feature documentary ever made about the seminal 80's
new wave band Devo. We are currently seeking a co-editor and two to
three assistants to join our post-production team.
Devo, broadly known for their hilarious inverted flower-pot hats and
hit song "Whip It", is also recognized by its fans and critics as a
darkly subversive group of conceptual artists. Their ideas and tight,
aggressive musicianship are completely original.
Devo's name comes from an elaborate theory concocted by members that
mankind is devolving. They use music, film, performance, costume, and
art to get their ideas across.
Its members grew up in the 60's -70's former rubber factory
towns of Akron, Ohio. They were art school kids, and formed the band
partially as a dadaist reaction to Vietnam and the shootings of
protesters at Kent State which involved their friends and acquaintances.
Discovered by Iggy Pop, they became hugely successful in the 80's,
declined, sold out, went into hiatus almost broke
up, and now have finally made a new album – the first in 20 years.
The band's leaders, Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale, have an odd
love/hate relationship that is a central story in the film. We have
open access to the band, and have interviews with them, Iggy Pop, Dave
Grohl and other rock notables, family members, and a crazy cast of
characters who surrounded them during their Ohio days. There is
amazing archival and present-day concert footage, verite footage, home
movies and present-day stuff shot by the cinematographers Lee Daniel
(SLACKER, FAST FOOD NATION, DAZED AND CONFUSED), and Shane Sigler
(CAPITALISM:A LOVE STORY).
The film's theme could be loosely described as "what happens to an
artist's intense creative and political convictions as they get
older". We seek to combine traditional documentary method with
offbeat editorial styles and structuring to produce something that
reflects the craziness of the subject. Think Errol Morris' FAST CHEAP
AND OUT OF CONTROL. Devo now has a new album on Warner Brothers and
are touring. This band is well-loved enough and the film interesting
enough that we hope to garner strong festival
attention and conceivably a small theatrical release.
We have a quirky, fun team we hope you can be a part of. The
filmmaker/editor is Tony Pemberton. His first narrative feature, BEYOND THE OCEAN, went to Sundance and multiple international festivals. In
addition to Devo, he has a new narrative feature in the works which is
set in Russia and will be an international coproduction. The producer,
Roberta Friedman got her start with George Lucas on Star Wars and
Empire Strikes Back. Co-editor Ann Husaini has edited two highly
original feature documentaries, ALMA and CARNIVAL
ROOTS, which were both selected for Whitney Biennials and had wide
festival exposure, as well as multiple television projects for MTV and
other cable channels.
This film is a probono project. Hours will be tracked for deferred
payment. It does have strong investor interest, so we hope we can eventually offer pay, but cannot guarantee anything. Editing on AVID.
There is approximately 80 hours of footage. We have transcripts,
and need logging/organizational assistance and some synching. For editors, we are currently creating topical segments that we'll use to structure the first rough cut.
We'd like to give assists junior editorial opportunity – pulling nuggets they think are great, assembling string outs, and taking a first stab at rough cuts when possible. Please be able to offer either two days a week or a chunk of time a month.

Below is the text from our recent fund raising entry on Kickstarter.
Kevin O'Hanlon is a gallery owner and filmmaker, originally from Dublin, now living in NYC. He's starting a nonprofit called FilmsOnArtists through which he will travel the globe to make documentaries about artists and the creative process.
The primary focus will be the artists' context as content, how they have been influenced by their environment, history and circumstances, and how they have uniquely channeled that experience in a positive and creative way. The films won't be about famous artists, but about spiritually and environmentally connected ones, ones who daily take random materials and refine them into artforms that educate and enlighten.
"Artists don't have a blueprint for what they do. No one has been where their mind is currently projecting. They look into a blank canvass and create a future that we will all ultimately inhabit. FilmsOnArtists will combine their experiences and report back from the creative front-lines to let us know what that future will look like."
O'Hanlon has made films of a dozen artists and art projects to date. Recent projects include a documentary of an orphanage in Cambodia, a woodcarver in the rainforest in Costa Rica, and two in Haiti. One of the Haiti films happened when Kevin went there to offer help following the earthquake and visited with orphans who had lost their home and school in the catastrophe. He joined forces with Life For The World and Haitian-American artist Richard Laurent and brought the kids 220 canvasses to paint. He filmed as these young artists created their very first paintings. From there, Kevin and Life For The World took that film and the art produced by the children and had an exhibition at his gallery in Chelsea. The money raised went to rebuild the demolished orphanage that is home to the young Haitian children. The Haitian childrens's project will continue to be supported by and reported on by FilmsOnArtists.
Says O'Hanlon: "This was one of those mutually abundant situations. We got to experience the mindset of these amazing children at a pivotal moment in their lives, while bringing so much joy to kids who had never held a paintbrush or seen a blank canvass before. The project empowered them, affirmed their artistic abilities and set them on a creative path to their own solution. They are Haiti's future, the generation who will rebuild."
An interactive website is being designed for FilmsOnArtists. The website will catalog the films and interconnect the lives of the artists that show up in FilmsOnArtists' documentaries with visitors of the site. Viewers will be able to engage more meaningfully in the project by perhaps choosing which geographic location thay are interested in or what type of art. A future feature of the site will allow the user to select a theme such as "hope", "curiosity" or "courage" and hear our global artists speak together on that theme.
We want www.FilmsOnArtists.com to be a place where people can gain inspiration from every corner of the globe and connect to a global creative energy.

Hi there, working in two media campagins that involve famous artists, photographers, actors and filmmakers. We're developing this campaings for the next 3/5 years and include documentaries, live tv events, exhibitions, books and social media. We already have a executive producer, a very good PR company interested, filmmakers and the production team. I'm the producer in one of the campaigns that involves a very famous national geographic photographer and is about children in conflict zones. The second project is a media awareness social activist documentary about the Amazon. I'm the director of the documentary, and i'm working very closely with a very interesting film studio in the area as well with local indigenous communities and shamans. We have already some of the sponsorship covered. But we still have a lot in the table to work on, so we're looking for 2/3 people who can work in future premises, once we get the full sponsorship we can pay for the amount of work done.
Looking for an assistant producer, contacting organizations, production companies, setting up interviews, creating schedules, talk to the team and figure out places, processes, timeline and everything needed before the shooting. The second or third person will be to make research about current issues and people in the areas, write emails to potential faces of the documentary and contact people.

what role do you want to play with your film? are you wanting to direct it? produce? just see it get done?
One more week to go for DOCUWEEKS in New York and LA. There are some really great films playing that y'all should go and see. This week in NY you can catch MY PERESTROIKA by D-Word's own Robin Hessman, as well as WASTE LAND (Lucy Walker) and BUDRUS (Julia Bacha) in NY. Just some of my favorites. Have also heard amazing things about FREEDOM RIDERS.
In LA, you can see STEAM OF LIFE, in which naked Norwegian men discuss life in saunas (believe me, it's amazing), SUMMER PASTURE, in which you can witness up close remote rural life in the mountains of Tibet and learn about the value of yak milk as a moisturizer, and you can see THIS WAY OF LIFE, which I highly recommend for all phobic parents. This New Zealand family lives by a whole different set of rules, and it's an eye opening opportunity to examine how parenting is approached in this country.
These are just some of the highlights of a really great crop of films. And as we all know, unless we ourselves get our butts into theaters to support our fellow docmakers, how can we expect others to do the same?
I highly recommend a visit to the Arclight in LA or the IFC Center in NY. It's like taking a vacation without every leaving home.
Sort of an off topic request, but I am looking for a wedding photographer for October 10th, 2010. Its ideally suited for someone who is just starting out as the payment we have is $500. We are currently in postproduction on a feature doc with the working title "Give Up Tomorrow." It is a murder-mystery social-justice story set in the Philippines. Our offices located in Park Slope.
We’re seeking an intern to assist with post-production. Responsibilities will vary depending on individual’s skills but will include sub-titling and media management using Final Cut. There is a possibility to assist with graphics for anyone with Photoshop experience or an interest in learning it.
The position is unpaid, but we’ll cover transportation and working meals. School credit, general mentorship/advice, and credit on the final film will certainly be provided to excellent interns. The ideal candidate will be: bright, enthusiastic, self-motivated, and patient, – very attentive to detail, interested in the editorial process and documentary filmmaking – able to give 10-20 hours per week to the project (schedule flexible, open to discussion). Photoshop experience a plus.
