This is my first posting. I can not believe it took me so long to join! I work at Big Mouth Films, the production arm of Arts Engine, Inc. (Check us out at www.artsengine.net.) We are hiring. Here are the stats:

Coordinator, Docuclub and Fiscal Sponsorship Programs
This full-time position is an excellent opportunity to join a team of experienced film and web professionals and help Arts Engine, Inc. better serve the independent film community. Candidate should be a resourceful self-starter and able to take initiative in a fast-paced media arts organization. They must be able to work calmly in a demanding, and visible position. The ideal candidate will be able to anticipate needs and keep staff informed of problems or issues affecting specific projects and the organization as a whole.

Responsible for the day-to-day execution and success of all events and communication related to launching Docuclub at Arts Engine. Also responsible for tasks associated with serving as liaison to filmmakers with respect to Arts Engine’s Fiscal Sponsorship Program.

Coordinator will work closely with other staff in the Production Department as well as with the Director of Operations to ensure consistent and timely coordination of all Docuclub activities and filmmaker relations.

Tasks include:
• Oversee all aspects of membership relations for Docuclub.
• Coordinate all Docuclub events, including In-The-Works screenings.
• Generate ideas for marketing and promoting Docuclub and Arts Engine’s Fiscal Sponsorship Program.
• Serve as liaison to all fiscal sponsorees.
• Coordinate production information sessions.
• Work with Docuclub partners to develop program.
• Coordinate other necessary services for filmmakers affiliated with Arts Engine’s programs.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s Degree
• Experience coordinating events
• Familiarity with the field of independent documentary film.
• Must work well with a team
• Superior communication skills
• Detail-oriented, with excellent organizational and planning skills
• Proficient with Mac computers, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.

The Content + Intent Documentary Institute
Working Films Residency at MASS MoCA
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Wilmington, NC. December 18, 2007) – It’s that time of year again! Working Films is accepting applications for its five-day residency for documentary filmmakers at MASS MoCA. The residency, which is called the Content + Intent Documentary Institute, will take place March 12-16, 2008 in North Adams, MA. Applications for admission to the Institute may be found online at www.workingfilms.org (or you can contact Anna Lee at alee@workingfilms.org). The application deadline is January 25, 2008.

Ensuring that a film’s release has an impact is as important as its production. The Content + Intent Documentary Institute will guide approximately ten filmmakers and advanced film students through the development of outreach plans for their film projects. Linking the documentaries-in-progress to organizations committed to progressive social change will be a key component of the Institute. Participants will create an audience engagement plan for their films, identify community partners, and develop support materials, including effective timelines, budgets, and implementation strategies. Working Films will offer insight on the development of web sites, fundraising tactics and press strategies.

Filmmakers accepted to participate in the Institute must submit a $500 enrollment fee to attend. (Some scholarships are available.) The enrollment fee covers housing costs and some meals. Attendees will reside in MASS MoCA’s artist housing which is within walking distance of the training site.

Working Films will announce accepted applicants on February 7, 2008.

Call for entries for 7th Encuentros del Otro Cine International Documentary Film Festival

Submissions are now being accepted for the 7th Encuentros del Otro Cine International Documentary Film Festival, EDOC, which runs in the three Ecuadorian cities of Quito, Guayaquil and Manta from 8 – 25 May 2008.

EDOC is looking for innovative and exciting documentary films from across the globe.

The previous edition of the festival, in May 2007, was attended by a passionate audience of 12 thousand spectators and received a broad coverage by the media. Sixty-two films were screened, including a wide program featuring the best of contemporary documentary with films such as Into Great Silence, Jesus Camp, Blockade, Acidente, Cocalero, In the Pit, My Father The Turk, amongst many others.

Voices from the Waters 2008
3rd International Film Festival on Water

Bangalore Film Society, Arghyam, Svaraj- Society for Voluntary Action Revitalization and Justice, Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, Ithaca College, USA (FLEFF) Mountainfilm in Telluride, USA, Alliance Francaise de Bangalore and Water Journeys – Campaign for Fundamental Right to Water are organizing the third International 'Voices from the Waters'- the biggest international film festival on water in August 2008 following on the footsteps of the hugely popular and successful events in 2005 and 2007.

This consortium of committed organizations active in water issues are inviting you to be part of this festival by contributing short, documentary, animation and feature films (DVD format only) with English subtitles on water and related issues. Also include a photograph and CV of the film-maker, a minimum of three film stills and a short synopsis of the film. You are also most welcome to send us photographs for exhibition at the festival.

The first edition of 'Voices from the Waters' was held in April 2005 in collaboration with Alliance Francaise de Bangalore, while the second was held in June 2007 in Bangalore, India by a consortium of organizations. With the overwhelming success and the positive responses to the festival from across the globe and the urgency of the water issue to a planet headed towards catastrophe, 'Voices from the Waters' is being organized as an annual event of images and sounds, of films, songs, photo and art exhibitions, lectures and conferences, a platform for diverse voices – free as water as nature intended it to be.

If you have a film under the following categories:
1. Water Scarcity,
2. The Dams and the Displaced,
3. Water Harvest,
4. Water Struggles,
5. Floods and Droughts,
6. Global Warming and Climate Change,
7. Impact of Deforestation on Water Bodies and
8. Water and Life,

you should consider sending it to us so that we may place them in the festival. All entries will be acknowledged. 'Voices from the Waters' is a public awareness program and while there is no entry fee for the festival, the final short-list for the festival will be decided from the entries by a committee comprised of eminent film-makers, film critics and social activists. This is also conceived as a traveling film festival.

Deadline for entries is 30th April, 2008 .

After a sold-out screening in 2007, The International Documentary Challenge returns to Hot Docs in April 2008! Registration for the 3rd annual Doc Challenge, held March 6-10, 2008, is now open.

The Premise: Filmmakers from around the world have just 5 days to make a short non-fiction film. Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival, the Presenting Partner, will once again host the theatrical premiere of the finalists and the awards ceremony during the Festival. DOCUMENTARY INTERNSHIP

Coming to Terms With Impermanence is an impressionistic documentary about highly acclaimed poet Diane di Prima. Poet, memoirist, activist, and teacher, the “Poet Priestess” is the most well-known female writer of the Beat era and has published more than 40 books of poetry and prose, including Recollections of My Life as a Woman, Loba, Memoirs of a Beatnik, and many many more.

The film is about artistic conviction and commitment, and mixes impressionistic scenes drawing on the perception, feeling, and mood of di Prima’s prolific writing, set into context with humorous anecdotes from her peers.

Intern(s) will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in all aspects of creating a documentary. Ideal for motivated students wanting to learn or improve software skills and apply their knowledge to conceptualizing and creating an unusual and beautiful film.

Based on skills and experience, interns will assist with post-production, production and upcoming shoots, graphic design, creating websites and dvd's, writing promotional materials.

Interns will have the opportunity to gain experience with the following: Arri-S, Super8, DVX100a, lighting and/or sound recording for interviews, Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Photoshop, AfterEffects. Training provided.

Director's previous work has screened around the world and won awards. Preference for students seeking academic credit. 1-2 days per week commitment, work will take place in media facility in Williamsburg.

IN SEARCH OF DOCUMENTARY PRODUCER

Hi all -

I've wrapped up a rough cut of my first documentary film titled, "The Money Stone," and I'm in search of a NYC based producer to help finish the project. The film explores the world of illegal gold mining in Ghana, West Africa and looks at its impact on the people and the environment. The film was workshopped last November at the IFP Rough Cut Lab in NYC and has already gained some interest.

Ideally, I'm looking for someone experienced and who has a passion for film about human rights and development in Africa. More specifically, I'm looking for someone who will help secure completion funds, aid in the creative process of bringing the film to picture lock, and help in bringing the film to festivals and through distribution. Most importantly, I'm looking for someone to become part of the team who wants to see the film be successful and get the word out about the topic. - Associate Producer
- Production Coordinator

ASSOCIATE PRODUCER: Duties include: assisting in casting, working closely with producer/director and key characters, and communicating with network. Must have a proven track record with at least 2 years experience on feature-docs (not reality TV). Highly organized, outgoing, professional, detail-oriented, fearless, and, if possible, mellow. Multi-lingual a plus.

PRODUCTION COORDINATOR: Responsible for organizing all the logistics of shoots: local, out of state and international. Communicating regularly with shooters and field-producers. Hi-

I'm currently studying the Technique of Film and Video Editing in its 4th printing, by Ken Dancyger. It has an excellent history on how different editing techniques are featured in different genres and how technological changes have impacted editing decisions and styles.

He cites Karel's book as a deep inspiration and I need to study it. I am extremely serious and thorough about what I am doing and I can't afford to gloss over all the great cinema before video was invented.

My view is that quality editing is to a substantial extent independent of the medium. Alternatively stated, if I immerse myself in the study of the editing techniques of Hitchcock, Kurosawa, Resnais, Welles, Goddard and Fellini, I will be serving my interests well. I will never achieve my idea of greatness in cinema without mastering what each of these masters was all about.

Then you should read Eisenstein. Karel took his tiny bit of editing philosophy from him. Most of the book is about the mechanics of editing film. Another series of books worth reading are by EDWARD DMYTRYK. Called "On Screen Directing" "On Film Editing" etc.

Yep, clearly Eisenstein is key. I'm really enjoying the war films of Humphrey Jennings; the way he combines music with a documentary (Listening to Britain) and poetry with a documentary (Words for Battle) is masterful. And although he clearly is influenced by montage, Jennings is singularly British as well.

I'm also enjoying how King Vidor weaves sound and scene in Our Daily Bread and his work generally (The Crowd).

And I remain a serious devotee of Bunuel and his editing throughout his very long career.

I'm interested in exploring new avenues in what role sound plays in a documentary and how to weave that into the editing process. Any reading suggestions you might have along these lines would also be warmly welcomed.

If you're enjoying the Jennings, a must-read is Dai Vaughan's "Portrait of an Invisible Man: The Working Life of Stewart MacAllister, Film Editor". Remember that "Listen to Britain" credits Jennings and MacAllister as co-directors.

It's the single most inspiring book on editing documentary I know, written by the most experienced documentary editor in the UK. It's out of print, but you can still find copies via websites like http://www.abebooks.com

I'm looking for a Spanish speaking boom operator in the San Diego area. Must have a valid passport. Shoot is March 1st to approx. March 10th. Will fly with a charter plane from San Diego to the San Ignacio Lagoon where the majority of the shooting will take place. Return will be by plane, if we're lucky, or by bus (14 hrs). EXPERIENCED ASSISTANT EDITOR NEEDED TO ORGANIZE LARGE SCALE DOCUMENTARY

I need an Assistant Editor to come to Cleveland for several days, a week, or however much time necessary, to come up with organization system for a long form doc containing 200 – 300 hours of footage and numerous characters. Footage needs to be logged and searchable, interviews need to be transcribed and we need to be able to train interns to do much of the rudimentary work. Editing HDV material in Final Cut.

Fee negotiable plus travel/living expenses and accommodations. Could eventually be an ongoing position depending on funding. Prefer someone within a 1000-mile vicinity of Cleveland (i.e. New York).

No. The idea would be to come up with the best system so we can train interns to do the actual grunt work. For example, should they be given clones of QT files? How will they log the time code? etc.

Your best solution is to get all 200 hours onto hard drives. Then make clones of sections of the materials that can be loaded into an edit system so people have control over the material. Let them make subclips with notes about the material. The transcript project should be done by a professional who can insert time code into the documents. That said, I wouldn't bother with transcripts of all the material. Too expensive. Just transcribe the 20% that may make it into the film.

Hello,
what would be the best options in terms of camera to shoot a shoestring budget documentary which requires a lot of outdoor shootings following a subject discreetly in different local public places and some indoors for interviews- (pretty much guerilla/ news style)?

here are the options:
-Panasonic DVX 100b
-Panasonic AG-HVX200(P2 cards + camera =outside our budget range-unless somone knows a great place to buy it cheap)
- Sony HDR-FX1 (someone told me good but not so great)
-Sony HVR-A1U
-Sony HVR-Z1U

now i have been told, since the film style will be pretty much hidden camera style (almost) , to use may be a high end HD consumer camera so i can hide it even in pocket.
does anyone know anything about the quality of these cameras below:
-Panasonic HDC-HS9 (HD & 24p)
Canon HV20 HDV (HD & 24p)
Panasonic AG-HSC1
Sony HDR-CX7

any suggestions or help?

it's nice that IDFA wants to do this, but c'mon, that's friggin expensive. first and second time directors who are currently in the midst of producing their films do NOT have the money to jaunt off to amsterdam for a bit of mentorship. to go from the u.s., you'd have to spend about $2500-$3000 for tuition, airfare, and accomodations. no IDFA Summer School for me.

This might well be a question for the mentoring section.

That said, the Canon HV20 is probably the best disposable high definition camcorder you can buy. Because of its plastic parts, it is unlikely to last you much more than one film. But for what it is, a disposable HD camcorder, it can't be beat. It has a very nice lens and superior image stabilization. Ranked as product of the year (2007) by Videomaker magazine.

I must add that one nearly fatal flaw in the Canon HV 20 is the sound. In my book, any camcorder that uses mini-jacks for its mike inputs is completely unacceptable for almost all serious work by any documentary professional.

You can, however, bring the sound quality of the HV20 up to a level that will be acceptable to the vast majority of viewers by using good mikes connected to an XLR adapter (such as a Beachtek). That XLR adapter then plugs directly into the HV 20.

An XLR adapter will do nothing to improve sound quality for an HV20, or any camcorder. The adapter plugs into the mini-jack, so you're still dealing with that bottleneck. Plus, you're adding another noisy connection to the path between mic and tape, and the pots in the adapter itself which will get dirty and add their own noise. In fact, even when they're not dirty they're pretty noisy.

There are some decent mics available (Rode, Sennheiser,?) with 1/8 inch plugs. I'd go with one of those, or record audio to a separate recorder altogether.

Nigel, one of the qualifications for being a Member here is that I need to be of demonstrable use and benefit to the professional documentary community. As things appear to stand now, I need to wait until completion of one of my films before I am granted membership. Unfortunately for me, that will be next year.

I do not object to that requirement. I am willing to play by the rules; that's fine. I am not complaining about the rules and I am not attempting to change them.

If you can assist me in becoming a member sooner, then I am willing to share what I know about this with you and others immediately upon receipt of Group Membership. I am aware this decision is not up to you.

As a member, you have much more power in this group than I do. You have access to all sorts of discussions that I am not privy to, that I would benefit enormously from.

Until that fine day when I become a member, I have to zealously guard certain crown jewels which I do possess. Otherwise I would be at a complete and absolute disadvantage to every member here.

Nothing personal at all. It's just part of paying my dues.

No worries Matt. The question comes from just an inherent interest for 'all things production' in the Middle East. I worked there for a few years and wondered if there had been any significant changes in access to Mecca. You stated you are a newcomer and I was impressed that you had this kind of access, the assumption I made was that you weren't affiliated with any large media group. I wasn't looking for any hard earned personal contacts just some basics, in the past we used crews out of Egypt because it was difficult to get any non-muslim producers into Mecca. I should have phrased the question differently, apologies. My days working in the Middle East are, in all likelihood, over.

You are right in assuming that I have no influence here and can do nothing to help you become a member quicker, I'll leave that to Doug and the more senior members here who have invested years of their lives creating this invaluable resource and support network.

I will say this though, it surprises me how little the mentoring section is used by enthusiasts, you mention you are not privy to a wealth of information, I disagree, all you have to do is ask a question, the members are incredibly generous with their time and advice.

Matt, I may be speaking out of school here, as I'm a fairly new member and not one of the hosts. This forum is, in my limited experience (though I have read every post since the beginning and found a wealth of useful information) one that is, almost above all, based on a selfless spirit of generosity and community. Established filmmakers help each other, and they also help newcomers to the field in public forums, such as this one. I haven't seen any quid pro quo requests here... if someone requests information or assistance the response is always generous and unqualified. Paying it forward, to use a trite phrase. I should think that your providing a member with requested information would be automatic and not come attached with conditions. You could request the member's e-mail and provide the info in private if you did not want to share your "crown jewels" with the public (members do this all the time). It's only my way of thinking, but if you demonstrated through your posts in the public threads that you could indeed be a productive participant in this little village by EXCHANGING information unconditionally with both members and enthusiasts in an intelligent, thoughtful, and professional manner, it might very well accelerate your admission as a member even though you are an inexperienced filmmaker. Food for thought. And don't get me wrong: it's great to have you here participating.

• Produced commercials for the African market for blue chip companies as Unilever, Reckitt Benckiser and Diageo and have a team of producers, directors, cameramen, soundmen, art department, location scouts and managers, casting agents, assistant directors, production assistants, grip and lighting crew, etc.

We also have inhouse camera and sound equipment. Grip and lighting equipment can be hired in Kenya.

I'm not complaining. But I think it would be incorrect to state that being a Member is identical to not being a member.

I remember as a law student the first time I entered the Stanford Law Library. The wealth of information there is staggering. The general public is not allowed in, for good reason.

But being allowed to study in those stacks of 18th and 19th century books, where the majority of thoughts are in complete paragraphs, was a revelation indeed.

And I have lots of questions about Vertov. For example, what influence did his films have on the very famous German actress Leni Riefenstahl before she started directing many years later? She must have seen his films; they were a smash in Europe. What influence did Vertov have on Bunuel?

And James Longley (member and 3 time Academy award nominee) is the only person I know of who has spent 2 years in Russia absolutely immersed in Soviet montage. I know he's a member here, but I've never seen him post in the Mentoring section. And I'm sure he has the kind of deep, specialized knowledge I seek.

I'm not being ungrateful or complaining. I'm simply able to make distinctions between my specialized inquiries and the general needs of others.

And I'm glad you understand my point about crown jewels, even if others do not. One thing I can say, for me it just seems essential to have an Islamic film crew filming in Saudi Arabia, especially given what I intend to film there. All my analysis starts from there.

Hey everyone I'm helping out with marketing and distribution for this feature documentary "Rapping With Shakespeare." Directed by Emmy Award-winner Michael King, it tells the story of how five Crenshaw High School students integrate Shakespearean literature with modern day urban music culture to express adolescence in South Central LA. We had a sold-out debut in Wisconsin and our next screening will be at the Palm Beach International Film Festival.
