CATHRINE ANN JONES is an award-winning playwright &
screenwriter whose films
include UNLIKELY ANGEL (Dolly Parton), THE CHRISTMAS
WIFE (Jason Robards), and
the television series, TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL. She co-wrote
the independent film, Angel
Passing(Hume Cronyn/Calista Flockhart), which played at
Sundance then garnered fifteen
awards both in America and abroad. As a New York playwright,
ten plays were produced
both in and out of New York City as well as several articles and
short stories.
She has served on the writing faculty at The New School, UCLA,
and the Esalen
Institute. A Fulbright Research Scholar to India and winner of the
National Endowment
for the Arts Award, Ms. Jones, also teaches in the Psyche and
Sacred Seminars at
Pacifica Graduate Institute. She lives in Ojai, works as a story
and script consultant,
and lectures internationally.

Veterans questioning why they fought. A middle class family trying in
vain to maintain their lifestyle in spite of economic hard times.
Ordinary individuals dealing with fear after acts of violence they
never envisioned could happen to them. We have a lot to learn from
the people of the Balkans. A new film, CRUCIBLE OF WAR, will tell
their stories when it makes its U.S. premiere at the Egyptian Theater
in Hollywood this coming weekend.

CRUCIBLE OF WAR focuses on ordinary people in Bosnia, Croatia, and
Serbia who have survived war, violence, ethnic hatred, and
displacement and are now working to rebuild their lives and
communities. The film's director, Leon Gerskovic is one of those
survivors. Gerskovic will be in town to attend the screenings of the
film, which is being shown in a program of the Artivist Film Festival.

'Other People's Pictures,' set in New York City's Chelsea Flea
Market, showcases nine photography collectors who share an
unlikely addiction - vintage snapshots that have been lost,
disposed of, or sold by their original owners. As our subjects
comb the market, ready to pay anywhere from a few cents to
hundreds of dollars for a single snapshot, they reveal the
experiences of loss and reclamation that fuel their pursuit of
these cast-off images.

An Associate Producer is sought to work with an award-winning video
documentary director/producer on a national public television
documentary program about the future of Americaâ*™s cities. The
program will examine the current national debates over urban and
suburban land use policies, smart growth and regional equity.
Description Assist producer in all phases of the production and post
production, including research for story development, location
scouting, conducting preliminary interviews, locating archival
materials, coordinating production shoots, assisting with the
preparation and completion of scripts, proposals and budgets. Assist
with production planning and logistics. Must be willing to travel.

Skills Required Minimum two years experience working on television
documentary production. Preferably PBS. BA in journalism or related
filed. Good communications, research and writing skills as well a
keen interest in the documentary form. Knowledge of smart growth,
urban planning issues, federal and state urban policies, community
development, metropolitan equity or environmental justice issues a
plus.

Mystic Voices LLC seeks knowledgeable, experienced

obtain broadcast of new documentary Mystic Voices: The Story of the
Pequot War.

What led to the first declared war in American history, waged against
Native Americans? Why has the seldom talked-about massacre not been
broadly presented before Mystic Voices? Why are there so many
differing accounts of this early and brutal event in American history?

Missituck, Connecticut, 1637: In the last hours of moonlight,
Puritans surround a Pequot village wielding swords, torches and guns;
they kill 400-700 men, women and children in one hour. Seldom told,
the 'victory' over the 'heathens' formed Colonial-American Indian
policy for three centuries across America.

The only film on this tragedy presenting viewpoints of historians AND
Native American descendants. Mystic Voices allows participants both
living and dead to speak via their first hand accounts and oral
history, through reenactments and commentary, artwork and music.

Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who are gay or lesbian, the film

UK documentary producers and those who want to spend a year in the
World's Festival capital, Edinburgh, may be interested in a new
Masters degree in Screen Project Development, hosted at the Scottish
city's Napier University. Geared towards producers it covers story
development, financing, working relationships and, crucially,
encourages participants to develop a project(s) during the one year
full-time or two years part time programme. Convened by documentary
producer Robin MacPherson (that's me) we hope to offer some of the

I'm in the middle of preparing a documentary and I've pretty much
completed everything letter of intention to film treatment with
master scenes as well as a detaileld shooting script. It's gonna
involve part narrative (on 35mm) and the bigger chunk, the actual
documentary, (on HD).

I'm up for a grant but I know that a budget breakdown would
strengthen my proposal.

My question is can anyone assist me in a list of all elements that
you might think I should include in my breadown as small as they may
seem- minimum crew requirements, equipment, other logistics. My only
exprience is shootign independent shorts on 16mm.

Media Literacy Violence Prevention Project Internships
Working with NYC High School Students

The Educational Video Center and Satellite Academy High School are
offering internships and independent study classes working with high
school students in the following activities in the Fall 2004 and
possibly the Spring 2005 semesters: video and web page production;
facilitating internet student discussions between school sites;
facilitating classroom discussions and activities related to media
analysis, violence in the media, violence in our society, and
alternatives to violence; facilitating classroom discussions and
responding to the viewing of student media productions.

The Educational Video Center and Satellite Academy High School
Project seek undergraduate and graduate students to do internships
and independent study courses working in NYC high school classes
facilitating high school students with video projects, web page
production, media analysis, critical viewing of each other’s tapes
and internet bulletin board discussions during the Fall 2004 semester
and possibly the Spring 2005 semester. The project, called the Media
Literacy Violence Prevention Project, explores themes related to
violence, alternatives to violence, media critique, and violence in
the media, and is a collaboration between Satellite Academy High
School, the Educational Video Center and New York University’s Media
Ecology Program of the Department of Culture and Communication.

High school students at the four different sites of Satellite Academy
High School (one site in the Bronx, one site in Queens, and two sites
in Manhattan) will explore the role of violence in their own lives
and communities as well as alternatives to violence; will learn
to “read” or critically analyze mainstream media that bombards them
with images and messages twenty-four hours a day; and will critique
the role of violence in the media (i.e. television, movies, music,
video, computer games, video games, etc). Additionally, students
will produce media that promote alternative messages. They will also
communicate with students from other Satellite sites about their
learning and their projects via “blackboard,” an electronic bulletin
board for internet conversations linked to the project’s website.

This is a wonderful opportunity for undergraduate and graduate
students interested in any or all of the following: working with high
school students, teaching media production, media analysis, violence
in the media, facilitating activities and discussions about community
violence and alternatives to violence.

Experience in video and web page production preferred but not
necessary.

DIGITAL CINEMATOGRAPHY/DOCUMENTARY CAMERAWORK course offered at the
New School this fall

4 session(s). Four Fridays, 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM, October 1-22, 2004,
New York City.

With small digital cameras now accessible to almost everyone, what
skills does the videomaker need to capture engaging, artful, and
technically sound documentary footage? This intensive workshop
teaches the basics of digital cinematography for the documentary,
with emphasis on how each frame must tell the story. Taught by D-word
member, documentary director and DP Cynthia Wade
(www.cynthiawade.com), students learn "hands-on" how to improve
dramatically their video images. Topics include learning to see
cinematically, using natural and added light, when and why to stay
away from automatic settings, special effects with filters/gels and
other fun tricks of the trade, and simple guidelines to follow so
that you will get all the shots you need for editing.

Special attention will be given to the challenge of simultaneously
shooting and directing the documentary, particularly as a one-person
or two-person crew. Students must have their own camcorders, which
they must bring to class.
