I've been on D-Word for a while but this is my first post. I'm teaching two classes in LA this summer and would appreciate it if you would spread the word to your LA friends.

LA-Based award winning documentary filmmaker Jonathan Skurnik is teaching two classes this summer, one on Documentary Fundraising and the other on the Craft of the Documentary. Both classes begin on Saturday, August 2nd. There's a 10% discount for all D-Word members.

Documentary Proposal Writing and Fundraising: This class is designed to help you create an effective proposal package that will enable you to raise money for your documentary. The class will take you step by step through the proposal process, beginning with clearly defining your story, writing a treatment, creating a budget, designing an innovative distribution strategy and developing your ability to pitch your film with confidence. The class will be limited to six students so each participant will have ample time to workshop their materials in the context of a nurturing and supportive community of their peers. The class meets for three hours on a weekend day for five consecutive weeks. Cost of the class: $395

The Craft of the Documentary Film: Each week we will learn about and discuss a key element of the filmmaking craft—such as conducting interviews, developing characters, and documentary cinematography—and look at clips from classic and recent documentaries to illustrate the brilliant ways that other filmmakers have accomplished their goals. Each class will culminate with an assignment to make a short video utilizing the tools we have discussed. We will then spend the first hour of the following class sharing and discussing our assignment videos. You will finish the course with a body of work, a new–found confidence and pride in your filmmaking skills, and a group of peers upon whom you can rely to help you make your next film. The class meets for three hours on a weekend day for six consecutive weeks. Access to your own video camera required. Cost of the class: $495

The Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival is now accepting entries for the 2009 festival. More than a few D-word members have sent their films for consideration in our great festival. Sebastopol is a small town one hour north of San Francisco in Sonoma County. It's a small town that loves documentaries as evidenced by the selling out of three screens over four days last year.

Our Early Deadline is closing soon, July 31, so don't delay. You can submit through Without a Box or through our website www.sebastopolfilmfestival.org

I am looking for someone to record some audio for me in Fort Collins, CO. I hope this will happen next week – it would mean meeting up with an author and recording her reading a few lines from her upcoming book. This can be a sound person, producer/filmmaker or a camera person with access to audio equpment. Can be recorded to mini-disk or to DV CAM (or mini DV) tape. Please no recording to DAT as I do not have a DAT machine.... Bad News: there isn't a very big budget for this job. Good news: this should take about an hour of your time. You might not make your day rate, but if you've got time available it's a bit of money for a small amount of work!

DocuClub is Arts Engine’s monthly film screening series of works-in-progress documentaries. For more info, please go to: www.docuclub.org.

Our next DocuClub screening will take place on Wednesday, August 20, at 7 p.m., at Goldcrest Post (799 Washington Street, between Horatio and Gansevoort), in New York City’s West Village. Our moderator will be Melissa Fowler, Founder and Director of the Reel Venus Film Festival.

Please join us as we screen "Good Fortune" by Landon Van Soest. The documentary explores how massive, international efforts to alleviate poverty in Africa may be undermining the very communities they are aimed at benefiting. The film presents portraits of three individuals targeted by multi-million dollar aid projects, who say the projects are threatening to destroy their homes and livelihoods. Contrasted with well-intentioned humanitarians working against the odds to stimulate positive change, "Good Fortune" presents a unique perspective on the struggle to overcome world poverty.

Landon Van Soest is director/producer of "Good Fortune." His previous film, "Walking the Line," is an award-winning feature documentary about “vigilantes on the U.S.-Mexico border” that has been lauded for advocating human rights. In 2005, he founded Transient Pictures with partner Jeremy Levine. He is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship and received the award for Socially Conscious Documentary at the 2007 IFP Market.

Producer/editor Jeremy Levine co-directed and produced "Walking The Line" with Van Soest, and recently worked as an editor on "Everything’s Cool" by Judith Helfand and Daniel B. Gold. His work has screened in dozens of film festivals around the world and broadcast nationally in six countries. Levine is currently developing the Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective, a non-profit organization that provides support to independent filmmakers in New York City.

Van Soest and Levine recently returned from work-shopping "Good Fortune" at the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Composing and Story Labs. In addition, "Good Fortune" is a fiscally-sponsored project of Arts Engine.

Greetings all!
I'm involved with a 501c3 based in Virginia that generates school supplies and teacher funds for two orphanages in Liberia. It's a small organization, and has done some amazing work. After 5 years, the organizations board of directors are making the 14 hour trip to Liberia in January to finally get on the ground, assess the needs of the children and the orphanages, and come back to the states with some clearer ideas on how to improve the conditions for the children.

We're hoping to document the trip, and upon departure from Liberia, leave the video camera with the orphanage for educational purposes, and teach the children some of the basics of video production, etc. I know most of the folks here are incredibly resourceful, and I thought I'd let everyone know what we're doing! If you're interested in helping out, or have some advice or any kind of direction you could point me in, you can contact me offline! Award-winning filmmaker Jon Reiss (www.jonreiss.com) is seeking editing interns for his latest documentary project “Bomb It” about the explosion of graffiti culture all over the world.
