Bio

Hello everyone,

My name is Jill D’Arpino, and I recently joined the community because I believe the story I carry may be meaningful for documentary storytelling.

For most of my life I lived what I thought was a happy and normal life. I raised my family, built a career, and lived in Las Vegas, surrounded by the entertainment world. Early in my career I worked at Caesars Palace, handling promotional items for performers including Frank Sinatra and Cher, which gave me an early appreciation for the power of storytelling and performance.

My life changed forever when my son Michael died by suicide. Like many families who experience this tragedy, there were no hospital visits, no clear warning signs. Losing him forced me to confront the reality that many people hide deep emotional pain behind what appears to be a normal or even happy life.

Since then I have dedicated myself to speaking openly about suicide awareness and mental health. I currently wrote a memoir titled “Overcoming a Life Destroyed” and developing a story project called “The Smile That Hid the Pain.”

The purpose of sharing my story is to help people understand that the absence of visible suffering does not mean someone is not struggling. I hope that by telling this story, others may feel encouraged to ask the difficult questions that could save a life.

I joined this community because I would love to connect with documentary filmmakers who are interested in stories that explore mental health, loss, resilience, and awareness.

Thank you for welcoming me here.
