This introduction contrasts the events of 9/11/01 in New York between close-up experiences in Lower Manhattan and a physically more distant but emotionally wrenching view from Brooklyn.

Birgit Rathsmann was born in Erlangen, Germany. She grew up in Germany, Iran and Indonesia, where she received a diploma from Jakarta International School. After a one-year foundation course at St. Alban's College of Art in the UK, she completed a BA in art history at Scotland's St. Andrews University, with a one-year diversion to the University of California at Berkeley. She moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1992 and attended Columbia College Chicago, where she received a BA in film and discovered dual passions for documentary film and computer animation. Since then, she has been working as a freelance computer animator in Chicago and New York. She has directed a number of music videos and a documentary on the heroines of Hong Kong cinema. She currently lives and works in New York.
