Hi everybody.
I'm Rob, and on my business card it says I'm a documentary
producer. This is because, until recently, I produced cable docs
and magazine stories for Towers Productions in Chicago. I have
recently gone freelance and moved to New York in the middle of
a recession. That's why my business card doesn't say "career
counselor."
I've done programs for The Food Network, A&E, The History
Channel, MSNBC, and The Weather Channel (yes, The Weather
Channel does programs). I even scored a doc for a friend (and
d-word member).
I've also compiled a rather long list of "next projects," which, if I
can ever free myself from the cycle of wage slavery, I'll start on.

I'm really happy to find this forum. Maybe one of you can
explainto me the difference between "self-employed" and
"unemployed."

Welcome to the group!

By the way, found out the hard way that the diffence between
self-employed & unemployed is how much money you have in the bank to
support yourself... But if you ever go for unemployement, NEVER tell
them you're self-employed!!!

Hello colleagues,

my name is Michel Rolland, and I'm from Madrid (Spain). Although I
had read about the D-Word community in DOX - EDN's magazine -, it
was not only until january that I was personally invited to join it
by Doug, during the House of Docs discussions, in Sundance. It's
great to see the interest and committment that I can read in every
member's comments, so I'll try to provide helpful and interesting
information. LA LINTERNA, my one member company, is still pretty much
breaking through. We are just starting to work for some spanish
channels providing contents that we shoot in Ny-area by some
associated people I have down there. We have been trying to enter the
international scene for more than two years, since the money for
documentaries in Spain is either non existent or in the hands of a
few multimedia-multicapital companies who provide weigth more than
quality... But this year we are going to produce a documentary that -
hopefully - will give us access to that scene...

I must apologise for my spelling mistakes, but somehow Internet always
rushes my typewriting... It's good to join the D-Word community, and
I'll be posting very soon information about festivals in Spain and
initiatives that a group of documentaries professionals organize under
the name of DOCUS.

I am very happy to have found this website...I am a lover of
documentaries and would love to work on them full time, however, not
sure how to break into the BIZ...still happy to be here....

How to break into the biz. Phew. There's film school. There's
interning. There's marrying a wonderfully rich and supportive fella.
And then there's going out, buying a digital camcorder and JUST DOING
IT.

Okay don't expect to make a living at it just yet...well I have a
Master's in English and teach full time at a junior high...my mind is
ripe with things I could document, am dying to, but who where do I
connect with to get my things shown or funded? All that I am very no-
knowledge on....

Jennifer, read up on grants for docmakers. Going the grant route is
probably best for first-timers if you have a social issue your
exploring. Otherwise, you probably have to get it off the ground out
of your own pocket.

My dear friend Sarah George, who some of you know, finally kicked me in
the butt hard enough to get me involved in The D-Word, and I'm glad she
did. This looks like quite an interesting place to convene, share
ideas, collaborate, commiserate.
I'm a TV doc producer living in New York. Recently, my company, which
was contracted by MSNBC to produce bios and specials, let go 95% of its
employees, including myself. So I join the ranks of the unemployed.
I look forward to seeing what y'all are up to.

Association got me into. I signed up for the International Marketing
of Docs cyber-conference at the end of the month, but am going to be
