You can ask that question, but I would suggest asking it in the Final Cut Pro topic, which seems to be where the Apple software post-production questions end up. This topic is for silly people like me who can't figure out how to navigate this extremely well-designed website.
Help, Suggestions, Future of The D-Word
Difficulties with The D-Word? If you can't find the right answers on our Help page, please post in this topic. Ideas for future D-Word releases or projects can be posted here as well.
Okay, please don't judge me but I cannot figure out how to join the d-word facebook page – can someone please help me? I've used FB help but their directions don't seem to apply since I can't find the icons they refer to one your page.
As long as you are logged into FB, you just need to click on the "like" button just to the right of "The D-Word"
to move a discussion from one topic to another, linking between topics in other words, how does one do this with a track pad on a powerbook? The instructions say 'right click to copy', but with the track pad? Thanks.
Like on any mac, hold down the Control key and click.
Even this PC guy knows that! ;-)
double help – i have now lost my formatting on d-word. Just a sort of typed page format. still calm. (barely)
put on new boots and bathed and it works – JB you are a genius.
I'm doing some research on production pricing for documentary film making. Some films claim it cost them 1.8 million and some $250,000 yet quality and substance seem to be the same. Does anyone have a pricing model I can research that would show me pricing for low budget, mid grade, and high end documentary films? Help????
Is it possible to upload an entire film so that festivals and potential TV buyers can watch it? We don't like to send out DVDs anymore. Previous films have ended up as bit torrents.
Folks, this is definitely the wrong Topic – as the note above says, this is solely for questions about The D-Word.
AJ, your question is so wide that it's doubtful that there's a simple answer out there, but for future reference such queries go in the Mentoring Room Topic.
Dietmar, as a Professional this should probably go in Marketing and Distribution . Double posting is discouraged, but as this is in the wrong place you can repost there.
Yikes – for some reason the camera topic has disappeared when I log into the site. Any ideas?
Check "my topics" from your homepage and make sure you haven't accidentally hidden it.
Thanks Marj – don't know why it changed but that was the solution.
Easy to do if you check D-Word from an iPhone. I do it all the time.
Wish there was a separate SAVE for "Current Location".
Only seems to get saved after a post. Often I get thwarted somehow and forget to update, then I've posted and would have to post again to save it, so I don't and then forget to update next time. Not a big deal, just noticed when I realize I need to update, I am not able to do so.
-Hmm... Is it not in the post editor you get for 15 minutes after a post? I'll look into that.-
You can also change your Current Location while you're not posting by editing your profile
EDIT – If you forget to put in your location, you have 15 minutes to edit your last post, so just click the Pencil and then you change your Location as well as fix any mistakes in your post (like I've just done)...
Hi, I am currently subtitling my film, Lucky Express, and I need advice about how to subtitle? Two questions:
1- I have put the translated subtitles as they are spoken...so sometimes the sentence is finished on the next image. Do I use an elipsis because the sentence is not finished?
He went to the store and bought ...
(and then next image) ... some milk and some bread.
Do I use the elipsis or not? Am very confused!
I have to subtitle my lead character because even though he is speaking English, it is really bad and basic English. So when I correct him, how much can I correct? The tenses? The words?
As long as I stick to the meaning of what he is saying, is it alright to put words into his mouth?
Right now, I have tried to use the exact words he is using even though the English is wrong. My theory is that all people will be able to understand the basic idea of what he is saying, even though the English is wrong.
When I corrected his English too much, later when I was reading the subtitles, I noticed that it was harder for the brain to fully understand the meaning, because what he was saying in English and what I was reading were similar but different.
Does this make sense? Its so hard to explain!
Anyway, is there a basic Rule Book for handling subtitles correctly which I can refer to?
Anna, this topic is intended for Help with issues about how the D-Word is running. You should re-post your question in the Mentoring Room
Actually, you should go ahead and apply for professional membership, then ask the question again in the Editing topic.
Will my profile information be searchable on search engines outside of D-Word?
As explained in the privacy note when editing your profile, the fields with the eye symbol will be visible to everyone.
In reply to Ben Kempas's post on Thu 4 Aug 2011 :
Yes, on The D-Word site, but – I am asking about off site search engines – Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.
Troy, I believe that Google will index that which is "public" on this site.
Yes, Google is included when Ben says "everyone". There's also a feature to preview your public profile. Click on your name at the top of this page where it says "Signed in as Your Name" and then you can click in the blue box to switch to Public Preview view. However, I've just noticed that it's not strictly accurate, since your photos and the links to your posts are only seen by logged in users and NOT by Google... I will fix this in the next site update...
Generally though, Google (and users not logged in) only see your name, your website links, your films, and your "Public Bio".
Apologies for the downtime this morning. This was due to an outage at a data centre. Everything should be back to normal now.
Anybody have a licensing contact at C-SPAN? I've got a bunch of footage that I need to get cleared, and it seems too much for the std form they offer on the website....
Nick, please don't double post. We saw your request already in the Legal topic. Besides, this topic is for help with The D-Word, so pick the ONE topic you'll be posting in carefully.
Sorry, Doug....Wasn't sure which would be appropriate....Elizabeth Westrate suggested I post it in the Research & Archives section, do you concur?
Probably, but I'd leave it in Legal since most will see it there. If you don't get a response within a few days, maybe then re-post in Research.
Trying to add a film to my profile and getting an error message that the Vimeo.com URL is not valid ... not sure why this would be the case ...
It was because our embed generator wasn't expecting the www.
I've updated it now so you should be able to embed with or without the www. from both YouTube or Vimeo.
You could also of course embed via Distrify and get loads of other benefits ;-)
Thanks. The same problem seems to exist elsewhere in the site. For example, I was unable to embed a YouTube video in the Cameras topic although the URL exactly matched the formatting of the example in the error message.
I put in a fix for both YouTube and Vimeo to ignore the www.
Hi there –
Does anyone know if I can post my documentary on D-Word if it's a Dynamo Player? Or is Distrify, Vimeo and YouTube the only options?
We support a wide range of embeds that use the oembed protocol, including Hulu, Flickr, Viddler, and more. As far as I am aware Dynamo does not support this secure and open standard.
Thanks Peter.. so it sounds like the dynamo player won't work here on D-Word.. (right?) (Are you saying Dynamo is not secure?)
I've been meaning to upload it to Distrify anyway..
Thanks so much! I really appreciate the feedback.
Howdy Faith, I couldn't help but respond when I saw your post. We were at FSU together. Sorry I don't have an answer to your question but just wanted to say HI!
I can't speak about the security of Dynamo, but we don't support raw embeds because these are not very secure in a semi-public forum. For a technical explanation see the hidden section...
In reply to Jill Woodward's post on Mon 29 Aug 2011 :
Hi Jill.. WOW.. this is too cool!! Thanks for your message. I checked out your bio and you're doing some really cool stuff. Who knew you were right down the road from me in Atlanta. I hope you're enjoying NY. Thanks again for reaching out! :)
In reply to Peter Gerard's post on Tue 30 Aug 2011 :
Ahhhh... okay, Peter. Makes sense now. Thank you for taking the time to explain.
are we allowed to post are availability and/or services on The D-Word? if so, where?
thanks in advance,
Hope I'm not repeating, but haven't found the answer...
I get the digest form of d-word. I've noticed it doesn't include every post from the time since the last digest, sometime half or less. Does this happen to everyone? Is there a fix?
If you've read some posts on the website they are not included in the digest. It only includes posts which are "unread", i.e. the ones that would have blue dots next to them when you come online.
Hmm. I can't tell what's chicken and what's egg. I rarely go to the website except when I think I'm missing something in the digest... But it sounds like anytime I might scroll through a page looking for a post, anything on the open page won't get sent?
If you've opened a topic and have loaded some posts to your browser they are marked as "read". Then those won't show up in your digest. If you want to mark a topic as "unread" click the top right corner of the last post you've read, and then all posts after that will be in your next digest.
I am trying embed a vimeo link to the shameless self promotions section. However I cannot get any vimeo links to work, but youtube links are working.
Thoughts? My link is: http://vimeo.com/29625203.
The error message is this:
"Embed is not a valid video URL. Please use a URL of a YouTube, Vimeo or Distrify page. (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmciuKsBOi0)"
I got the same error message yesterday trying to post a YouTube video in the Bar & Grill. Daffy Duck awaits you, sir.
In reply to John Burgan's post on Wed 14 Sep 2011 :
can you elaborate on "double posting"? is there a time limit? i posted my availability back in April. can i post it again after a certain period of time?
thanks in advance,
Sure, Michael. We mainly mean posting in two or more topics with the same message within a short period of time (say, a few days). You can, of course, get creative with changing the posts so it doesn't feel like double posting, but you didn't hear that from me.
Hey Doug – I'm trying to post a video in "work in progress". I'm posting the vimeo url (not the code) – but I'm getting an error message that says it's not a valid url.
We have been having a problem with Vimeo's embed API. I'm working on a fix and will post here as soon as it's solved!
Uh Oh. The Doc Bar and Grill is doing that thing again where you can't see the last post.
The farmer and I posted at the same time which caused the space-time continuum to implode.
In reply to James Longley's post on Mon 19 Dec 2011 17:12 UTC :
Let's just continue here, I was the last poster unless you posted after me in which case I wasn't the last poster though I keep on getting a message that there is another post after mine and so maybe it was yours. Or not. So where the fuck is Jet City and I have an unopened bottle of Jura awaiting a partner. And then this post wouldn't post because Roth is posting. GET HER OUT OF HERE! Unless she joins us for a Jura (only another $14.99 for you my dear.)
-opening door for Herman-
No, after you.
-waits till Herman is mid-doorframe then squeezes thru at same time-
Maybe I'm dense, but there doesn't seem to be a way to find D-worders by geography. I go to "People" and put in "Boston" or "Massachusetts" as a search term and the only thing that comes up is a guy whose last name is "Boston". Any suggestions?
Try Advanced Search and then put the details in the "Company and Address" box
Re Cameras: Perhaps Deepak Varma, in trying to post his pictures, locked up the topic in some way? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
funny... i finally decide to post a trailer in WIP and it's not working. it's a Vimeo URL and I'm getting the error folks were getting in the past:
There were problems with the following fields:
Embed is not a valid video URL. Please use a URL of a YouTube, Vimeo or Distrify page. (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmciuKsBOi0)
I see on extra TV show; where they were talking about a documentary about dyslexia and recommended for more info see dword.com I have not been able to find it?
Looks as though "D Word" is just part of the title, not a source of info.
I think so; I found what I was looking for; thank you anyway.
When I try to post a link to vimeo (by copying and pasting) I get an error message that the URL is not valid. Any ideas as to what's happening and how to fix it?
I should have said that it was in the Works in Progress topic.
This should be fixed now. Turns out vimeo changed their API and also their standard URLs. I've updated The D-Word to support these changes.
Hey folks – this has come up in the Works in Progress thread: "what is the HIDDEN SECTION?" – I don't quite understand the purpose – aren't all postings visible to all who are logged in as pros? Am I missing an important protocol?
Yes. It's all visible to professionals. By putting something in the hidden section (link directly below posting box) it takes one further click for the reader to see it. We generally encourage really long posts that maybe aren't your own (e.g. an article or job posting you are passing along) to go in the hidden section. Some folks use it for more sensitive information. Many here use it for comedic impact. But if a professional clicks, yes, it's all available to see.
Just to clarify, people in WIP are using it now so that others who may not want to read their input, or who may want to watch the piece without reading the thoughts of others first don't have to see their feedback. Blame Margot.
In reply to Marj Safinia's post on Thu 9 Feb 2012 :
Thanks – yes – it makes sense and it's quite sophisticated...
Sorry about the downtime over the last day or so. Nothing to do with us. This is what we were up against.
As a consequence, Peter is preparing a move to a different host which should give us better overall performance.
First stage of the move completed. The database is now in a different state. I'll move the uploads later tonight and then we'll be completely in new surrounds...
There may still be some intermittent issues. Please bear with us!
You're looking extremely stressed, Peter. Have a drink in the Bar.
In reply to Peter Gerard's post on Tue 14 Feb 2012 :
Thank you, Peter!
In reply to Ben Kempas's post on Tue 14 Feb 2012 :
I was concerned...
I always read D-Word with my morning tea.
Now once again, all is right with the world.
We might still experience a bit of downtime as we decided to use this 'opportunity' to move our server to a different host.
I'm getting that invalid url message when I try to post a youtube video, again. This time in Views on News. I'm using Firefox.
What was the URL?
I just checked and it was working OK...
It's probably me, because it's any youtube or vimeo. I was hoping you knew what knuckle-headed thing I was doing or setting I needed to change.
We've had some intermittent problems over the last few weeks and I want to apologise to the community for the occasional outages we've experienced.
Since we relaunched The D-Word site back in 2007 we've been on the same server with the same host. They were cutting edge at that time, but in the past five years, our hosting company was bought by a bigger one and since then they have been trying to phase out our old data-center in favour of even more cutting-edge hosting. Since the acquisition, I've been planning on moving The D-Word to a different host (where we'd get more value for money), but I had been putting it off because it's complicated and time-consuming to move all of our valuable data safely. And it's always hard to find free-time to do these things when maintenance downtime would affect fewer members of the community (i.e. the middle of the night!).
On the eve of Valentine's Day, we experienced the most significant outage The D-Word has probably ever had – this was due to massive problems at the old data-center, and prompted some emergency actions to make sure all our data was safe, and then to make sure the site was stable again. This year, The D-Word was my Valentine, as I spent the day working on getting d-word.com back online and moving some of our essential stuff to a new home. Luckily, my fiancé is very understanding!
Over the last few weeks I've been preparing our new home for The D-Word and had set up a new server with the latest software and hardware so we could be ready to move the rest of the site.
Unfortunately we've experienced further downtime from our old host in the meantime, and I apologise for not completing the move sooner. Yesterday our old host automatically moved the site to a different data-center (as part of their plan to phase out the data-center that went down in February) and that broke some things unexpectedly. Luckily I had already set up the new server, so this morning I've completed the move to our new shiny server with more memory and more power. I managed to do this without any additional downtime.
I hope that no one was inconvenienced too much by any of this!
We should now expect more stability, possibly some more speed, and much less downtime. I've tested the new server thoroughly and it feels snappier to me. It's also geographically closer to Europe now, so it should feel a little faster across the pond. We now have a more durable email system as well. All in all, the recent problems have forced my hand, and I guess that's a good thing for the long term. Please let me know here if you notice any niggling issues.
