Scottish Documentary Institute is pleased to announce that Bridging the Gap 8 is now open for applications!
We are looking for Scottish-based filmmakers to make 10 minute documentaries on the theme of SHIFT. We want films to be told in the first person – either by the filmmaker or the main character.
12 ideas will be short-listed on the basis of the proposal and supporting materials. In the following weeks they will be developed through weekend workshops so that they can be pitched to a panel of experts who will commission the final 5 projects in December 2010. The films, to be delivered by April 2011, are intended for distribution in cinemas and festivals.
Who can apply?
This scheme is open to all filmmakers based in Scotland, and particularly aims to bridge the gap between training/graduation and a first commission, and those filmmakers who have not made films for the big screen. We are especially interested in filmmakers from diverse and under-represented backgrounds. We cannot accept applications from students in full time education.

We are happy to announce a partnership with Women Make Movies for our September DocuClub. The screening will take place on Wednesday, September 29, 7 p.m., at 92YTribeca (Take 1, A/C/E to Canal Street).
We will screen a rough cut of FLAT DADDY [www.flatdaddydocumentary.com] by Nara Garber and Betsy Nagler. As military families across the country continue to endure the deployment of loved ones to Afghanistan and Iraq, many attempt to fill the void with “Flat Daddies” and “Heroes on a Stick,” life-sized cardboard cutouts of their husbands, wives, sons and daughters serving overseas. Using these two-dimensional surrogates as a connecting thread, the documentary tells the stories of four such families, from suburban Minnesota, the Bronx, Las Vegas and rural Maine, as they unfold over the course of a year. Each family represents a unique perspective on the war effort and the difficulties of deployment; together, they weave a nuanced narrative of how military families are coping in post-9/11 America as combat operations enter their tenth year.
Co-Director/Producer/Director of Photography Nara Garber divides her time between directing, producing, shooting, and editing. Often wearing many hats on the same project, Garber produces educational documentaries for Carnegie Hall and has helmed productions for major corporations while also collaborating on provocative PSAs for The Point Foundation and the political satirists, Billionaires for Bush. As a DP, she has dragged camera equipment across five continents in pursuit of the perfect shot. In 2009, a documentary assignment took her on a tour of American military bases in Iraq where many of the men and women serving volunteered the opinion that deployment is harder on the families back home. Garber hopes that FLAT DADDY will help bring that statement to life for a larger audience.
Co-Director/Producer/Editor Betsy Nagler is a Brooklyn-based writer and filmmaker. Her producing and directing credits include work for the website of the Working Families Party, for the television show BLUE’S CLUES, and short narrative films shown at the Seattle and Chicago Film Festivals. In 2005, she completed ‘DO, a documentary on how people feel about their hair that received funding from the New York State Council on the Arts through the Brooklyn Arts Council Community Arts Regrant Program. She and Nara Garber then received a NYSCA Individual Artists' Grant for FLAT DADDY in 2008. Nagler earned her B.A. at Stanford and her M.F.A. at New York University.
For her first film, Producer Peggy Sutton directed and produced SQUONKUMENTARY. Selected for the 2005 New York IFP Market, the documentary also screened at the Three Rivers Film Festival, Rehoboth Beach International Film Festival and the 2006 Bend Film Festival. Over the past 18 years, her work as a script supervisor has ranged from big budget movies like MEN IN BLACK II to indies such as POLLOCK.
FLAT DADDY is a fiscally sponsored project of Women Make Movies.
Our moderator will be Rose Vincelli, the Program Manager for the Independent Filmmaker Project [www.ifp.org], specifically focusing on curating and producing the Independent Filmmaker Labs, an immersive workshop assisting first-time Documentary and Narrative feature directors with distribution and exhibition strategies, as well as the Project Forum of Independent Film Week. From 2005-07, she was a programmer for the SILVERDOCS Documentary Festival, helping to grow the festival in its inaugural years and working primarily to curate the Shorts Competition. Vincelli recently produced the short documentaries TRANSPOSITION and NO ONE WANTS TO EAT THE PARSLEY. She lives and cooks in Brooklyn.

I am looking for an experienced editor (preferably in the Bay Area, but not a deal-breaker) to help me finish a feature-length documentary called TEACHED.
The film provides a candid look at how and why, fifty years after Brown vs. Board of Education desegregated American schools, black and Hispanic students are still performing far behind white students. The film takes the audience into urban schools where the problems are most severe, to talk to the students, parents, principals and, most importantly, the teachers working there to understand: why the race-based "achievement gap" persists; how it is connected to cycles of poverty, underemployment and incarceration; and what could be done to eliminate it.

I'd like to find an editor in the next 2-3 weeks, give you the footage to watch, and then work with you to wrap this puppy up before the end of 2010. I know what stories the footage is ready to tell, but I don't have enough experience to do it. I need an experienced editor who has sophisticated story-telling skills (some of the stories are quite sensitive), great technical ability (FCP), and a strong belief that all kids can learn and achieve at high levels if they are given the chance. I'd also like to find an editor who believes that a documentary film can be compelling and educational and inspiring...and ALSO a beautiful work of art.

Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, the premier venue for nonfiction film in the American West, is seeking submissions for its eighth annual event. From February 11-20, 2011 the festival will screen 100+ films, including world and U.S. premieres, classics, rare and experimental works on Montana's largest screen at the historic Wilma Theater in downtown Missoula, Montana. In addition to ten days of screenings, the event will feature many public and VIP events including panel discussions, galas, receptions and networking round-tables.
The competitive event is open to non-fiction films and videos of all genres, subject matter, lengths and production dates. Docs In Progress returns this Friday, September 24 with Trailer Night. You will be able to provide feedback on documentary trailers and might even be able to get feedback on one of your own since we've got one open film slot. Read on for details.
This workshop-style screening program allows filmmakers who may be at an earlier stage of development with their films to benefit by the moderated feedback of audiences who have traditionally provided feedback on full rough cuts. The filmmakers are looking for audience feedback not only on the effectiveness of the trailer itself, but on the concepts of their films – tremendously helpful as they continue in production and post-production of their films. The evening is being moderated by Erica Ginsberg (Executive Director) and Adele Schmidt (Program Advisor) from Docs In Progress. This program is organized by Docs In Progress and sponsored by The Documentary Center at the George Washington University.

Indie Documentary Film seeks MBA-type with passion for the arts/film
MediaGroove LLC is seeking a Associate Producer with a strong business background to help project manage and coordinate resources for our documentary Get It All Out – a feature-length story about the life of a late, charismatic, yet unknown Pittsburgh musician/ vocalist / poet/ humanitarian and the percussive post-punk/ jazz/ worldbeat/ avant-funk band he was in during the early 1980s. Our protagonist was truly a likable, inspired character, and it doesn’t hurt that he was a compassionate human being who could actually sing and write decent lyrics. If you have experience in collaborating on dynamic teams, contributing your best ideas, are not afraid of hard work and take pride in getting things done – we should talk!
In short, we are reanimating the lost musical DNA of an underground sound that never reached a wide audience, and having a blast doing it (by re-recording, remixing and releasing an amazing songbook of material as a companion soundtrack). Film-wise, we’re 2.5 years in the making and we’ve already completed 2/3 of our planned interviews. Breaking the rules of the typical talking head “rockumentary” – we’re incorporating the use of animation/motion graphics, CGI visualization, social media and other creative digital storytelling techniques to elevate the storyline in contemporary ways.
The right candidate will play a key role in setting the stage to refine and finish the film so this is a great opportunity to be part of an experienced team on the excavation of a dusty gem of a narrative. This position is non-paid (though we will cover working production meals, pre-approved necessary expenses) and will provide you with valuable experience and connections.
Qualifications & Responsibilities:
• This is the ideal project for an MBA with a passion for the arts. Someone who wants to use their professional business (and or marketing) skills outside of work to help bring a film through post-production, fundraising, and see it distributed to national/international festivals, Netflix, Amazon, cable/satellite, etc.
• Strong prior knowledge of Microsoft Project or other web-based project management tools (Basecamp or similar.)
• You will work with the film’s Producer to manage timelines, deliverables, set milestones and hold people to reaching them. Great organizational and detail skills a must!
• Commitment to a minimum of 1 to 2 days per week on a part-time basis (starting immediately)
• MUST be NYC-area based and able to attend meetings with producer, director, assistant editors and archivist.
• Interest in music as a force for social change, progressive politics, multiple genres of music (e.g. – jazz, rock, afrobeat/afro-pop, funk, dub/reggae, post-punk, etc.) – helpful, wouldn't hurt –- but not necessary.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Etsy has been in existence since 2005, and celebrates craftsmanship from the retired birdhouse maker to the Persian rug weaver to the 3rd generation letterpress printer. It has had a small but creative video presence on the web and is aiming to produce more journalistic and video content for viewers.
Etsy.com stories range from about 3 – 5 minutes in length and bring the sellers on the site — and their objects — to life. Currently, the site features three main video series: Handmade Portraits, which profile Etsy sellers, who may be artists, craftspeople, or vintage mavens; There's No Place Like Here, which feature the interiors of wonderful, collection-filled homes; and Process, where the methods tell the story. In addition, we often produce fun and unexpected How-To projects.
We are looking for producers and directors who can shoot and edit their own videos and who might lend their own unique, artistic mark to our productions (we are shooting more and more frequently with the Canon 5D and 7D). Reporting directly to Director/Producer, the Outreach Coordinator is responsible for community outreach, social media initiatives, editing DVD extras, marketing and distribution for educational and theatrical markets, film festival liaison handling applications, travel arrangements, promotion, and print traffic, managing interns, fielding requests, and other related tasks as required.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate for the Outreach Coordinator position has excellent oral and written communication skills, is organized and reliable, and demonstrates a passion for the film. They work well as part of a team and enjoy meeting new people. Previous administrative experience working in a Mac environment with WordPress, Final Cut Pro, Google Docs, spreadsheets, task management and other basic software is an asset, as is social media savvy. Knowledge of Russian is a plus, though not a requirement.

Class 2: Capturing, Importing and Editing a Rough Cut
Creating a New Project for Capturing, Previewing and Marking Source Material, Logging Clips, Choosing Clip Settings, Choosing Capture Settings, Choosing Capturing Options, Setting Capture Preferences and Acquiring other Media such as Graphics and Audio. Our October DocuClub will take place on Wednesday, October 20, 7 p.m., at DCTV [http://www.dctvny.org/], located at 87 Lafayette Street (at Walker; take N/R/Q/6 trains to Canal).
We will screen a rough cut of AN INTERVIEW WITH SIMONE WEIL by Julia Haslett. What response does seeing human suffering demand of us? Haslett seeks an answer in the controversial French philosopher and activist Simone Weil (1909-1943), whose life and work took on this question in a dramatic way. Adopting Weil as her guide through an engaging and profound moral landscape, Haslett goes on a journey to understand Weil’s loss of faith in revolutionary politics and the spiritual awakening that followed. Driving her obsession with Weil is the interwoven story of suffering within Haslett’s own family – her father's suicide when she was 17 and now her older brother's severe depression. When Weil dies from self-starvation at the height of World War II, Haslett is left wondering if death was the logical conclusion to Weil’s philosophy and her attempt to share the pain of others? The result is a deeply moving and unique documentary about what it means to bear witness to suffering, both near and far.
Director/Editor/Producer Julia Haslett makes expressionistic documentaries about contemporary and historical subjects. She is producer/director of the highly acclaimed WORLDS APART (2003) series about cross-cultural medicine, and producer of the companion hour-long documentary HOLD YOUR BREATH (2005), which broadcast on PBS in 2007. Her documentary shorts HURT & SAVE (2001), FLOODED (2003), ECLIPSED (2007), and PURE & SIMPLE (2008) have screened at numerous venues, including the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, Rooftop Films, and the Black Maria Film Festival. She has worked at WGBH-Boston, the Discovery Channel, and as a Filmmaker-in-Residence at the Stanford University Center for Biomedical Ethics. Haslett was awarded a MacDowell Colony Fellowship to advance her work on AN INTERVIEW WITH SIMONE WEIL, which is her first feature-length film.
Producer Fabrizia Galvagno has worked as a Project Development Manager and Producer with Arte, National Geographic, PBS, and TV Ontario. She developed LEONARDO DA VINCI: THE MAN BEHIND THE TURIN SHROUD? (2002) for National Geographic; RICE GIRLS (2003, Venice Film Festival) recently broadcast on Al Jazeera International; THE PRIME MINISTER AND THE PRESs (2003) for PBS; and GELATO: AN ENDLESS PASSION (2005), which aired on the Sundance Channel.
Producer Enrico Rossini Cullen is the Director of Development and External Affairs at Arts Engine. He has been a consulting producer on several of Arts Engine’s Big Mouth films, including ELECTION DAY (2008), ARCTIC SON (2007), and PUSHING THE ELEPHANT (2010), which premiered in June at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival in New York City.
Cinematographer Thomas Torres Cordova is a filmmaker and installation artist. He shot the award-winning PBS-broadcast documentary STRANGE FRUIT (2002) directed by Joel Katz. His films/videos have aired on the Sundance Channel and screened at numerous festivals. His latest film, EVERYBODY LOVES THE SUNSHINE (2007), was featured last January in a solo show at the Amie and Tony James Gallery in New York City.
Consulting Editor Jonathan Oppenheim’s editing credits include SISTER HELEN, which won the documentary directing award at Sundance and CHILDREN UNDERGROUND, which was nominated for an Oscar and won the Sundance Special Jury Prize, Gotham, and IDA awards. He edited the classic documentary feature PARIS IS BURNING, and edited and co-produced Laura Poitras’ THE OATH.
Our moderator will be Shaady Salehi, Deputy Director at Active Voice, a nonprofit media strategy organization. Working as the intermediary between film producers and NGOs, Shaady specializes in the use of film and media to support long-term social change. She has spoken at film festivals and conferences nationwide, including SILVERDOCS, Making Your Media Matter, NAMAC and the National Black Programming Consortium's New Media Summit. Prior to joining the Active Voice team, she did her graduate studies in Cultural Anthropology, focusing on the role of the Internet in provoking cultural resistance and social change among urban youth in Iran. She holds an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of California, Davis, and is currently enrolled in Columbia University's Strategic Communications program, with an emphasis in communications for social justice.

“SHOOTING POVERTY” Film Screening and Networking Event, October 26, 7 p.m., New York City
Arts Engine, Oxfam, and Shooting People are proud to present a special screening of three short documentaries exposing the true cost of armed violence on poor communities around the world.
The films were made by young independent filmmakers from India, Brazil and Burundi as part of “Shooting Poverty,” a film competition sponsored by Oxfam (www.shootingpoverty.org).
The filmmakers will be present for a post-screening Q&A and a networking reception. (You must be 21 or older to attend the reception.)

This is a simple authorization as it is your work and you have to give us broadcast permission. You remain with all content copyright and there is no restriction regarding submitting the same material to film festivals.
Our production will contact the producers to confirm if the submission was successful.
1) Will I still be able to send my work to other events and festivals?
Yes. We do not require exclusivity regarding festivals and events premieres. All producer / filmmakers are free to submit to as many as they feel doing so.
2) Will I be notified when my work will be shown on My TV?
Once you know your production has been approved, you can check My TV schedule available online at www.tvmychannel.com/tvschedule.html. The schedule is updated every Friday.
3) What else do I need to send?
We definitely need a synopsis about what is the production about. We also need warning in case of use of strong scenes, sexual or religious reference as it may affect the slot time where the film will be broadcast due OFCOM regulations.
If the producer/filmmaker send a press release or photos about the production we may use it to promote throughout or channels (website, newsletter and PR) but we can’t guarantee any exposure and pictures will not be returned.
4) When you deconstruct my work to use for channel publicity, will I be credited for my work?
If used only random scenes to promote the programs it won’t be credited individually. However when using pictures for printed material it will be credited.
