Institute of Documentary Film – Call for Articles

Two months into the adventure that is the www.DOKweb.net portal, the Institute of Documentary Film would like to announce a call for articles. We encourage documentary practitioners, industry insiders, students in a film or a film-related programme and other documentary professionals to send us submissions that deal with the theory or practice of documentary filmmaking in any part of the world.

Preference will be given to texts accessible to a broad audience. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, an account of your experience with international co-production, funds or broadcasters; documentary funding in Western Europe or North America; difficulties encountered in the development of your project; an outline of legal or other issues hampering the audiovisual industry in your country; advice and suggestions concerning various aspects of documentary filmmaking; views from the other side (overseas contributors, commissioning editors, funders). Film reviews are not part of the current call.

Submissions of 2 – 6 standard pages may be sent in English, Czech or Slovak. Texts selected by IDF's editorial staff will be posted in English and Czech on our portal, www.DOKweb.net, the largest online resource for East European documentary film. Following an agreement with the author, texts may be edited or trimmed. Authors of published submissions will receive CZK 250 per standard page.

There is no fixed deadline; submissions are considered on an ongoing basis. Please send your text in .doc format to dokweb@dokweb.net. The authors of accepted and rejected texts will be notified by email within two weeks.

LICENSE TO PIMP is a feature-length personal documentary about labor conditions for exotic dancers who must pay for the privilege to strip. The film follows the choices we and other workers make as our workplaces engage in illegal & unsafe practices that violate our rights as workers.

We want smart, energetic individuals who can commit time to learn about all aspects of independent film production. Duties will range from the daily tasks of operating a production company to specific work on different documentary projects in various stages of production. Position will be supporting an independent filmmaker with day to day activities and projects. The themes of various documentaries include sex work, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, & gay/lesbian issues.

This is a great opportunity to learn about development, production, & post-production in a creative environment. You must have a sense of humor, positive attitude, & a desire to delve deeper into social issues that impact women/girls, queer people, & people of color.

A background in post-production editing is essential. The candidate should be eager to learn about documentary filmmaking and have a foundation in film/video production & post production. Candidate must have Final Cut Pro editing experience and your own Apple laptop computer with Final Cut Pro (version 6.06), MS Word,& Photoshop. U must be able to work independently, multi-task by managing multiple projects, & prioritize workload as needed. Please note, we cannot accept people who only have PC laptops as all work is streamlined to Apple computer & editing applications.

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: Begins immediately. 3 month commitment is asked.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Transcribe documentary interviews
• Log & digitize documentary footage with Final Cut Pro
• Assist with research and licensing of archival photographs, music, and footage
• Production assistance
• Database entry and management
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

BONUS: Website development, knowledge of Illustrator, Flash, After Effects, outreach, and fundraising skills

TIME COMMITMENT: 2 to 3 days per week from 1pm to 7pm. Minimum 12-18 hours/wk (Mon. through Fri only).

Need someone who is strong on verite and speaks excellent English ... the only thing is that we're an indie doc so we are low on $$. If anyone can recommend someone, it would be great. Film is about ex-con turned spoken word artist Lemon Andersen. He is reuniting with his estranged brother in Amsterdam and we want to capture it on screen. DocuClub in June!

Our June DocuClub will take place on Wednesday, June 9, 7 p.m., at DCTV, located at 87 Lafayette Street (at Walker; take N/R/Q/6 trains to Canal).

We will be showing a rough cut of "Building Bridges" by Anand Kamalakar. The documentary follows a group of students from a New York City public school who travel to India. They journey across three cities performing as a band, staying with families and encountering all that India has to offer, they come to realize and understand the true meaning of love, friendship, discomfort, humanity and respect. This documentary takes you on an up-close personal colorful journey, revealing the complex and controversial nature of globalization and what it means beyond consumerism.

Director Anand Kamalakar is a Brooklyn-based documentary film director/editor. His documentary "A Match Made in Calcutta" won the Best Film award at the Mumbai International Film Festival, in 2002. The film was broadcast across Europe and Canada. He edited the series American Roots Music for PBS, and edited and executive-produced the feature-length documentary "Heart of Stone," winner of an Audience Award for Best Documentary at Slamdance. Kamalakar has also edited numerous films for The Discovery Channel, National Geographic, New York Times Television, and the networks CBS, NBC and ABC. He was a creative consultant on the Academy Award-winning documentary "Born Into Brothels."

Director of Photography Sachidananda is a cameraman from Bangalore, India, whose primary work has been in the regional feature film industry. He has worked on a several feature films and television projects in the Kannada language.

Our moderator will be Jennifer Merin, who has written about film for 20 years. She currently covers documentary film for About.com, is the film critic for Women’s eNews, and edits Women On Film, the online journal of the Alliance of Women Film Journalists, a nonprofit professional organization of which she is the President. Merin also reports on film and cultural matters for Westwood One Radio Network‘s morning drive news magazine, “America In the Morning,” and for Around The World Radio. She has been a regular reviewer and interviewer for New York Press, and has contributed to TheReeler.com. She has worked as newswriter/editor for ABC and CNN, and reporter for NBC. Her ongoing weekly column about culture and travel has resided at the Los Angeles Times and Associated Press, among others, and is currently distributed by ArcaMax Publishing. Merin served as a juror at the 2009 IDFA, and is a juror for the 2010 Golden Trailer Awards. She holds an M.F.A. from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and has taught at the University of Wisconsin and University of Rhode Island, lectured worldwide for the U.S. State Department and conducted workshops in New York City correctional institutions.

Unexpected legal issues can bring documentary production to a halt. The old adage, “The best defense is a good offense” rings true in filmmaking. This webinar with Entertainment and Media Attorney Laura Possessky will highlight the basic tools every producer needs to have in place to ward off legal woes. We will discuss when and how contracts, clearances and insurance may be used to effectively produce a documentary that is commercially viable and ready for distribution. The webinar will include a presentation and a 20 minute live phone Q&A.

This webinar is appropriate for anyone who is making their first independent documentary or for more experienced international filmmakers who want to understand basic legal issues for films in the United States. Producer for Documentary Feature

I am a theatrically released, PBS distributed filmmaker seeking an experienced New York City based producer to help create and launch a highly topical documentary about darkness, redemption and wisdom. In addition to professional producer skills, the candidate must have a proven trackrecord of fund raising for films and garnering financial support from corporations, foundations and philanthropists.

This is between a 12 to 18 month long project. Now in development, so far approximately 30% of the film has been shot, a solid treatment with promotional pieces has been created and locations selected. This is an ideal time to bring your talents, drive and vision to a very important work. This project has NYFA as a fiscal sponsor and the producer salary is generously budgeted.
