The aim of this personal documentary is to expand public awareness about the struggles of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in small town America and promote dialogue and action that will help people on all sides of the issues find common ground and lead to fairness and equality for all.

DIRECTORS: Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer formed qWaves.com to make documentary films that focus on controversial and often ignored social and human rights issues. They have produced and directed over a dozen pieces for television and won numerous awards including winner of the PBS Independent Lens Online Shorts Festival and winner of the Videomaker National Documentary Challenge.

PROJECT STATUS: Principle shooting is complete and over 200 hours of footage has been logged. qWaves is partnering with WPSU-TV Penn State Broadcasting and the Pennsylvania Public Television Network to the complete the program and present it for broadcast and distribution.

Internship in Outreach for New Environmental Documentary

The Subject
You already know about climate change. But did you know climate change affects the ocean? Some of the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is dissolving into seawater. It's changing the pH, making seawater more acidic; some say "corrosive." This water actually dissolves the shells of certain shellfish—clams and oysters, for example, as well as tiny plankton—and coral reefs. The effects are working their way up the food chain. Imagine a world without fish: it's a distinct possibility.

A Sea Change is the first documentary about this effect, known as ocean acidification. The film combines hard scientific information-—we interview internationally known scientists—with the personal story of a family of fishermen. With Sven Huseby, retired educator and concerned grandparent, we travel from Norway to Northwestern America, learning about the scientific, economic, and cultural implications of ocean acidification. Target completion date: December 2008.

This is the third film by director Barbara Ettinger of Niijii Films. Her work has screened at Sundance and been broadcast on PBS.

Internship Details
The focus would be web-based: researching ocean acidification, contributing to our blog, driving traffic to and creating content in our various social networks. You'd need access to a computer of your own and work mostly virtually, with face meetings bi-weekly: our key crew members are based in Brooklyn, Germantown, and Philadelphia.

The possibility for non-virtual activities will emerge, as we develop partnerships with local organizations in connection with a number of 2009 events.

This internship is for you if you like to do research, to write, are interested in environmental issues and filmmaking, especially distribution, and are comfortable in the web 2.0 world and able to work independently.

Barefoot Workshops is a New York City and Los Angeles based not-for-profit, founded by Chandler Griffin in 2004, that offers short, intensive workshops around the world in narrative and documentary filmmaking.

In this two-hour session, Chandler Griffin will provide an overview of Barefoot’s role in using media in the developing world to help Civil Society Organizations, Non-Governmental & Governmental Organizations, and individuals make change where it is needed the most. Chandler will discuss the media tools and formats used on the ground, how to conceptualize a workshop and ways to get involved. The goal of this session is to demystify the “how can I do this?” and give individuals a chance to learn how Barefoot Workshops does it, ask all the questions and get involved. You will learn that through Barefoot’s international workshops, they offer field placements for international students to assist organizations on the ground with media projects that help them to address challenges in their communities. These “hybrid” workshops result in dynamic learning environments, and open the way for international students to gain valuable field experience, and to learn about issues firsthand. If you are interested in discovering how you can change the world through the power of digital media, come find out how Barefoot can train anyone from vastly different backgrounds and skill levels, how to blend the technical and artistic aspects of storytelling, beginning with the basics of image-making all the way through to post-production to create a “symphony” of images and sound. so here's the million dollar question, Chris... how the heck did you manage to clear all the rock songs that I assume pop up all through the documentary? this seems to present a very solid case of utilizing Fair Use, but i just want to know if you did that, and then how you dealt with (or plan to deal with) any future claims by record companies...

I need a producing company that this interesting in investment and co-producing one documentaries trilogic named "Three Histories, A Single Pain". over the phenomenon of the paramilitary and guerrilla violence in some Colombian regions. .
The documentary is for realizing in Colombia, with natives communities in danger due to the armed conflict: the indigenous groups of the Colombian Guajira, Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta and the Nukak Makuk, of the forests of the Guaviare.

The doc investigation is ready and I based in this investigation, made the treatment. In this moment we needed one co-productor for realising the grabations and the post-production. Our interest is that many people in the word know the situation of the Colombian native people and his situation in the armed conflict. We the Colombian producers take charge of carrying out the total plan of shooting and post-production and the foreign co-producer, the money for that process and we the colombian producer, have loaned to foreign coproducer, the total right of the sale of the documentary in this Word área and one percentage ( 60 %) in others countries. This is our proposal.

When he spoke about his past, he was like a hero from legend. He fought for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr., and represented activists protesting the Vietnam War. When the inmates took over Attica prison, or Native Americans stood up to the federal government at Wounded Knee, they asked Kunstler to be their lawyer. It seemed to his daughters that he was at the center of everything important that had ever happened. But Emily and Sarah weren’t around for their father’s glory days. The sisters were born in the late 1970s when Kunstler was almost sixty-years-old. When they were growing up, he represented some of the most unpopular members of society: people accused of rape, terrorism, organized crime and cop killing. Was Kunstler’s later work consistent with the moral code he claimed to live by? In DISTURBING THE UNIVERSE, the filmmakers explore their father’s life, from middle-class family man, to movement lawyer, to “the most hated lawyer in America." Emily Kunstler graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with a B.F.A. in Film and Video in 2000. She worked as a video producer for Democracy Now!, an independent national television and radio news program that broadcasts on the Pacifica Radio Network and on public access and satellite television. With Off Center Media, Emily has produced, directed and edited a number of short documentaries, including TULIA, TEXAS: SCENES FROM THE DRUG WAR (2003), which won Best Documentary Short at the Woodstock Film Festival, and was instrumental in winning exoneration for thirty-five wrongfully-convicted people.

Sarah Kunstler graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in Photography in 1998 and from Columbia Law School with a J.D. in 2004. She is currently a criminal defense attorney practicing in the Southern District of New York. Along with Emily, she has produced and directed a number of short documentaries, including GETTING THROUGH TO THE PRESIDENT (2004), which has aired on the Sundance Channel, Current TV, and Channel Thirteen/WNET. DISTURBING THE UNIVERSE is the sisters’ first documentary feature.

My name is Cara Kay and I am currently working with a development team for a brand new television network that will launch in April of 2009. Right now, my assignment is to review short form content and submit what I find to our team, who will then decide which content to pass on to our acquisitions director. The Newport Beach Film Festival will be celebrating its 10th anniversary with an action-packed line up of independent and studio films from around the globe. From premieres of contemporary cinema, to live fashion shows, and tastes of Newport Beach’s finest culinary creations, we offer filmmakers the ultimate Festival experience.

The Festival will feature nightly special events including: red carpet galas, filmmaker receptions, compelling filmmaker Q & A sessions, international spotlights, industry seminars and retrospectives. Our moderator will be FERNANDA ROSSI, who is a writer, filmmaker and story consultant. She has worked on over 150 documentaries, fiction scripts and fundraising trailers. She also pens the columns “Ask the Doc Doctor” for Release Print and “The Doc Doctor’s Clinic” for DER, the Documentary Educational Resources. She is the author of Trailer Mechanics: A Guide to Making Your Documentary Fundraising Trailer.

Please join us as we screen "Off and Running" by NICOLE OPPER. The film depicts Avery, a seventeen year-old African American national track and field champion whose adopted parents are two Brooklyn Jewish lesbians, as she embraks on a quest to meet her birth mother in Texas.

Director Nicole Opper’s most recent project was producing the five-part documentary series LSS for Here! Networks, America’s premium gay television network. Her documentary short, "Song of Hannah," is distributed by The National Center for Jewish Film. She also line-produced MACKY ALSTON’s "The Killer Within," and associate-produced PETER MILLER’s "Sacco and Vanzetti." "Off and Running," Opper’s feature-length debut, is a co-production of ITVS, with support from The Foundation for Jewish Culture, The National Black Programming Consortium and The Puffin Foundation.

SHARESE BULLOCK is "Off and Running"’s Producer. She is Strategic Partnerships and Marketing Manager global youth media network Listen Up! She has led service and international education programs, including filmmaking exchanges for young producers throughout the United Kingdom with the “Experiment in International Living” (2005, 2006). She serves on the board of directors for the National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture.

JACOB AKIRA OKADA serves as Cinematographer/Associate Producer. He directed and shot the documentary "Curtis," about the journey of a gay African American man living with AIDS and surviving through art. The film received an honorable mention at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and screened at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival. The short also aired on the PBS series Reel New York.

Executive Producer MACKY ALSTON is an award-winning documentary filmmaker whose works include "Hard Road Home" (premiered SXSW 2007, aired on PBS’ Independent Lens 2008), "The Killer Within" (premiered Toronto International Film Festival 2006, aired on Discovery Channel 2007), and "Questioning Faith" (premiered Full Frame Film Festival and Hot Docs International Film Festival and aired on HBO/Cinemax 2002).

DocuClub in December: Tuesday, December 16, 6 p.m.

We are happy to announce a partnership with Third World Newsreel (TWN) for our December session. Our next DocuClub screening will take place on Tuesday, December 16, at 6 p.m., at Anthology Film Archives (32 Second Avenue, at 2nd Street).

Our moderator will be Desireena Almoradie, who is a television producer with over ten years of experience producing for PBS and cable networks. She has been a supervising producer for the PBS newsmagazine show IN THE LIFE, and in 2002, she was an Emmy nominee for a story she produced for that program. Her work has aired on A&E, The History Channel, TVLand, LOGO, and here! Networks. A graduate of New York University's undergraduate film and video program, she received a Masters degree at New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program in 2006. Please join us as we watch the following rough cuts:

1. Beyond the Music by Lottie Porch and Vanara Taing. This eight-minute short explores the joy and sense of community within the Inspirational Choir at Riverside Church in New York City.

2. PRIMETIME: Fighting Back Against Foreclosure by Jennifer Fasulo and Manauvaskar Kublall, is a timely look behind the foreclosure statistics and into the homes and hearts of two New York City women who have been pummeled by the foreclosure tsunami.

3. Glitter in the Hood: Gentrification in Brooklyn by Nuala Cabral, Thanushka Yakupitiyage and Jaisal Noor, explores the displacement of community members in Brooklyn neighborhoods.

Admission is free for current DocuClub members and $5 for non-members.

Hello everyone,

I'm working on a feature length doc that has recently been recommended for funding by ITVS. We just finished shooting and are gearing up for post. One huge task we have right now is to prepare our budget for ITVS (past and future). It clearly takes a whole lot of time and skills that we don't currently have. So right now I'm looking for an Associate Producer/Production Manager to join our team for the duration of the project to help us manage and deal with our budget. And because ITVS has such specific requirements, I'm hoping to find someone in NYC who has experience specifically with ITVS.

I'm also looking for a lawyer to help us with the contract negotiation. Again, I'd like someone with ITVS experience.

This is our first feature and much of this is new us, so if anyone has any advice as we move into this next phase of production its always much appreciated.

I wanted to second Michael's post from a couple of days ago about Joanna Rabiger, grantwriter. Joanna is truly a pleasure to work with! She is incredibly talented and dedicated, with a gift for words and film structure and is able to brilliantly and succinctly articulate a project (without run-on sentences like this one). Her work has certainly opened some funder's doors for my current film. And yes, she is fast and affordable.

I just wanted to introduce myself and get my name out there to this community. If anyone in the New York area is need of administrative, research, or production support as they gear up for new projects after the new year, please get in touch.

I am an aspiring producer looking for work as a production assistant. I have extensive documentary internship experience, a strong background in foreign affairs research and advocacy, and experience as an administrative assistant as well.

I am proficient with FCP and Photoshop, comfortable assisting on location, and used to being ask to do just about everything. An all around executer (with a sense of humor, of course)!
