DocuClub in February: Wednesday, February 25, 7 p.m.

Our next DocuClub screening will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 7 p.m., at The Tank, located at 354 West 45th Street (between 8th and 9th Avenues, near Times Square).

Our moderator will be Brian Geldin. He is a freelance public relations consultant who has worked with independent filmmakers on both documentary and narrative feature publicity. He is also the founder and chief note taker of “The Film Panel Note Taker,” a blog where he shares notes from film panel discussions, Q&As, and other film and media-related events.

We will screen "Our House" by David Teague and Greg King. The film documents a new and unusual community housed in an abandoned warehouse in Brooklyn that provides an alternative to the impersonal shelter system to the homeless and those struggling with addiction. Dan, a former felon recently out of prison, is one of the newest residents. Besides a roof and healthy food, he finds new friends, a spiritual haven, and the hope of putting his life back together. But when the building is set for demolition to make way for luxury condos, Dan and the other residents must confront the inevitable end of their community and what that will mean for their futures.

David Teague recently edited Cynthia Wade's "Freeheld," which won the 2008 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject and the Special Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. His documentary work includes the forthcoming "Intifada NYC" as well as "Our House," co-directed with Greg King. He also recently directed the feature-length musical melodrama "Love Suicides," and has shot music videos for artists such as David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, and Dolly Parton. His work in numerous short films has screened at Cannes, the Berlinale, and the Tribeca Film Festival, among many others.

Greg King is a filmmaker and multimedia artist based out of Brooklyn, NY. He was a member of the music group Rachel's and in recent years, he branched into film and video projection design for experimental theater in New York, working with acclaimed director Anne Bogart and the SITI Company ("Hotel Cassiopeia" and "Systems/Layers") and artistic director Lear deBessonet from Stillpoint Productions ("Bone Portraits" and "The Eliots"). He recently finished production on an experimental film cycle entitled "Rotating Mirror" (which received grant support from Angels Net Foundation and the Jerome Foundation).

Seeking Small Professional Film Crew to Shoot one, maybe two half days in San Francisco.

I am an independent producer working for PBS on the June segment of "In The Life" – this is a gay and lesbian program so if you have an issue with the subject matter this is not the project for you.

I'm looking for a small professional crew (lights, camera, sound) that will be shooting preferably with a Panasonic – compatible with the DVX100A. I will be shooting BRoll and on the DVX and using it as a second camera for cut aways. I will be arriving in SF next week and will have a confirmed shooting schedule in the next day or so. The budget is very tight on this. I have $600.00 for the half day. PBS will need to okay the crew so I will need a reel of some sort to give to them, preferably online since this is a bit last minute.

DocuClub is seeking short doc film on gender issues, for a partnership screening with the Media That Matters Film Festival.

The screening will take place in New York City, on March 9, and is open to the public. This time, DocuClub is broadening its scope and incorporating an outreach feedback component. The event will be held in collaboration with Mercy Corps, which is observing International Women's Day.

I'm interested in a rough cut of a short doc (no more than 60 minutes) that deals with gender issues (broadly speaking). The audience/moderator feedback would incorporate comments on the film itself, as well as on its outreach potential. On the other hand, the film could also already be done and in no need of further work-in-progress feedback, but would want some advice on its distribution.

SUMMER 2009 VIDEO EDITING INTERN WANTED
24 Hours for Darfur is an education and advocacy NGO dedicated to ending the conflict in
Darfur and promoting peace and security for the people living there. Using digital video, public opinion research and online media we aim to strengthen Darfur advocacy by making it more direct, better informed and global.

Our current project, Darfurian Voices seeks to document and broadcast the views of Darfurian refugees on the necessary conditions for a just peace. As part of this project we will spend April and May 2009 conducting a representative random sample survey and recording video testimonials with Darfurian refugees living in Chad. Both will capture their opinions on issues of peace, justice, and reconciliation.

Most video testimonial work with Darfurians has focused on documenting abuses of the past rather than their hopes for the future. Our video work seeks to fill this gap. Our video products will target policy makers, diplomats and key stakeholders, and give Darfurian civilians a voice in the political discussions that will determine their future. We are not producing a full-length documentary. Our video products include a series of short videos targeting high-level policymakers, a 25-minute narrative video for broadcast television, beta-tapes of broadcast quality footage and a series of individual testimonials to be posted online. Based on the survey data and video footage we bring back from the field we will launch an innovative education and advocacy campaign.

Our moderator will be Flavia Fontes. She is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and editor. Her first documentary, "Living With Chimpanzees: Portrait of a Family," depicts a couple who adopts two chimpanzees. The film was broadcast on Nippon Television in Japan and the Discovery channel in Canada. Fontes was also associate producer of "Chico Mendes: Voice of the Amazon," which aired on the TBS and TNT networks. Currently, she is in post-production with "Who's Afraid of Lynne Stewart?," a portrait of the first lawyer in the United States charged with supporting international terrorism after September 11, 2001. We will screen "Mrs. Goundo’s Daughter" by Attie and Goldwater Productions (Barbara Attie and Janet Goldwater). If Mrs. Goundo is deported to Mali, her two-year-old daughter Djenabou will almost certainly be forced to undergo female genital mutilation/cutting. "Mrs. Goundo’s Daughter" is the story of a Malian woman's fight for political asylum in the U.S. to protect her child from this traditional practice, which affects over 85% of women and girls in her native West African country. In following Goundo's quest to raise a healthy daughter in the U.S., the documentary reveals both the changing attitudes towards female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) in Africa and in Goundo's immigrant community in Philadelphia, and the layered frustrations of the long and unpredictable asylum process. Barbara Attie and Janet Goldwater have worked collaboratively since 1990 making widely acclaimed documentaries that have been broadcast nationally and internationally. In 2005, they were awarded the prestigious Pew Fellowship in the Arts. Their most recent collaboration, "Rosita" (2005), is the story of a 9-year-old Nicaraguan girl who was raped and made pregnant, and her parents' struggle with the medical establishment, the government and the church to end her pregnancy. Broadcast in Latin America on HBO/Cinemax as well as in Europe and Asia, "Rosita" was selected to screen at INPUT 2007 and has been shown at film festivals worldwide, including the Human Rights Watch Festival and Silverdocs. Attie and Goldwater's 2002 ITVS production, "Maggie Growls," a whimsical biography of Gray Panther founder Maggie Kuhn, was selected to be the premiere program on PBS' documentary series Independent Lens.

Co-Producer and Editor Sabrina Schmidt Gordon has been committed to documentary filmmaking for over a decade. Her editing debut garnered an Emmy for WGBH’s Greater Boston Arts series, and she has continued to distinguish herself as both a producer and editor, having worked on numerous award-winning documentaries for public television and cable. She is the Co-Producer and Editor of "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes," a groundbreaking documentary about manhood and gender politics in mainstream Hip-Hop that was broadcast on the national PBS series Independent Lens, and named among the best documentaries of 2007 by the Chicago Tribune. She has also expanded her work to include New Media as a Producer/Editor on The Masculinity Project—a web-based initiative of ITVS and the National Black Programming Consortium, exploring masculine identity in the Black community. Her commitment to social change extends to working with non-profit and grassroots organizations on video programs, among them Witness; Agricultural Missions; and the Center for Constitutional Rights.

Documentary about the War on Drugs in America based out of NYC (Charlotte Street Films) is seeking an experienced sound person to operate a boom and run sound next week on Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th of April in Buffalo, NY. We will be filming proceedings at a drug court and then doing quick set up interviews with prisoners, judges, lawyers and administrators. We have a bunch of the necessary gear (lectrosonics wireless and lav, sennheiser 416 shotgun, mixpre two channel mixer) but would still like to have another wireless system and maybe an extra shotgun mic (preferably a sennheiser 60?).
