“Airplay: The Rise and Fall of Rock Radio,” a new documentary by filmmakers Carolyn Travis and Chris Fox Gilson of Travisty Productions, takes viewers on a high energy journey through rock radio’s impact on American society--from spreading black music to white America in the 1950s to fanning the flames of ‘60s rebellion to the uncensored personalities and playlists of satellite radio today. Packed with insider stories from iconic deejays of the past fifty years, “Airplay” persuasively links the pioneers of music radio to the seismic cultural shifts of integration, the struggle to end the Vietnam War, and the corporatizing of America.
“Airplay” chronicles the innocent years of AM radio personalities like Cousin Brucie, Murray the K, Dan Ingram, Jerry Blavat, Casey Kasem, Dick Biondi, Rick Shaw and Wolfman Jack, the payola scandal, Top 40, the rise of progressive FM deejays like San Francisco’s Tom Donahue, the takeover of radio music by corporate giants and the new voice of rock radio through satellite. Rockin’ with fabulous radio songs by the Kinks, Donna Summer and LL Cool J, and spiced with famous music personalities including Fabian, Lesley Gore, Pat Boone, Grace Slick, David Crosby, Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead, and Ray Manzarek of the Doors, the film takes viewers deep inside the rock radio phenomenon.
Travisty Productions makes documentaries that dig below the surface of pop culture including “Rock Radio Revolution,” “Rock Jocks: the FM Revolution,” and “Wildwood Days.” Their films, which have appeared on PBS Public Television stations nationwide, have garnered numerous awards and were screened by the Museums of Radio and Television in New York and Los Angeles. Travis is a former news producer, Capitol Hill reporter and was an on-air radio personality herself, for 96X-FM in Miami. Gilson, a former Madison Avenue creative director and global-production executive, also authored best-sellers sold to Disney and New Line studios.
