FILM INDEPENDENT'S 2006 PRODUCERS LAB DEADLINE EXTENDED TO AUGUST 28,
2006

Film Independent is now accepting submissions for its annual Producers
Lab that will take place in Los Angeles during October and November
2006. The deadline for submissions is August 28, 2006 (postmarked).
Sponsored by Technicolor, Film Independent's Producers Lab is an
intensive seven-week program designed to help filmmakers working in
both fiction and documentary develop skills as creative independent
producers. Lab fellows develop a strategy and formal action plan for
bringing their projects to fruition -including a budget, schedule, and
business plan. Fellows have one-on-one meetings with established
producers, directors, and other industry professionals who act as
advisors to them on their specific projects.

A maximum of ten producers are accepted into the program each year.
Some projects that have gone through the Labs are the following: So
Yong Kim's Sundance-winning film, In Between Days; Jessica Sanders'
After Innocence, short listed for the Academy Awards' documentary
category; Andrea Millers' Dark Matter, currently in production with
Val Kilmer and Meryl Streep; Scott Prendergast's Kabluey, currently in
production with Lisa Kudrow; Dana Jackson's Park starring Billy
Baldwin; Mora Stephens and Joel Stephens' Conventioneers, winner of an
Independent Spirit Award; Ted Kroeber's American Gun recently released
by IFC Films.

Past instructors include Effie Brown (In the Cut), Eric D'arbeloff
(Lovely and Amazing), Alison Dickey (Piggie), Matthew Greenfield (The
Good Girl), Jasmine Kosovic (D.E.B.S.), and Shelby Stone (Lackawanna
Blues). Past guest speakers include Craig Emanuel, Debra Grieco,
Midge Sanford, Peggy Rajski, Laurie Parker, Ron Yerxa, among others.

The Program in Film and Media Studies in the Department of Art &
Art History at Stanford University is seeking candidates for a
tenure-track Assistant Professor position with an emphasis in the
field of Documentary Film and Video Production. The appointment is
expected to begin September 1, 2007.

The successful candidate will teach at the graduate level in the
M.F.A. Program in Documentary Film and Video and at the
undergraduate level in the Film and Media Studies program.
Candidates will be expected to teach a range of core courses in
both documentary production and studies. The production sequence
includes research, conceptualization, producing, directing,
cinematography, sound, and editing of non-fiction media. The
successful applicant will be encouraged to develop studies courses
that explore the history and theory of documentary. The Program
welcomes applicants who are filmmakers with significant experience
teaching beginning and advanced production students.

Applicants must have a completed MFA or Ph.D. Please send a
letter of application with a statement that details the direction
of your creative work, a description of your approach to teaching,
a CV, a DVD or VHS of recent productions, and a list of three

Seeking works in all genres (documentaries, narratives, shorts, ad
campaigns, PSAs, new media, etc.). Entries related to climate change
and/or environmental justice are especially encouraged, though
exceptional films addressing other environmental themes or social
themes with an environmental component will also be considered.

English or English subtitles only. While there is no minimum or
maximum length for submissions, screening time is limited and shorter
pieces may have a better chance of being accepted.

Women Make Movies, the leading distributor of films by and about
women, has an extra bedroom available in Park City from Friday,
January 19th – Thursday, January 25th. The available bedroom which
can accommodate one or two people is $1,500 (covers six nights -
1/19 – 1/25). The condo is located the base of Park City mountain, a
five-minute ride on the festival shuttle which stops in front of the
condo and runs continuously throughout the festival. We can provide

*WILDLIFE ASIA FILM FESTIVAL - CALL FOR ENTRY!*

What: Wildlife Asia - an international wildlife and environmental
film festival
Where: Singapore
When: 13 - 16 March 2007
Deadline for film entry: 10 February 2007
Early bird rate: Us$500 until 31 Jan 2007 (US$600 thereafter)

The new wildlife film festival, Wildlife Asia, will take place in
Singapore from March 13 to 16, with support from the Singapore
Tourism Board, Animal Planet Asia and the WWF.

The event will feature participation from Animal Planet, the BBC,
Conservation International, Discovery, National Geographic Channel,
NHNZ, NHK, UNDP, UNEP, WCS and WWF. The conference and festival
schedule will explore issues related to wildlife filmmaking in the
region.

The opening address will be given by Wong How Man, dubbed by Time
magazine as “the most accomplished living explorer of China”. Other
key events include: Wild Night at the Zoo, celebrating the career
of “India’s Attenborough,” Valmik Thapar; and Green is the Colour of
Money, where experts will discuss the economic implications of
failing to take care of the environment. The festival ends with the
Lion Awards, celebrating the best in wildlife, conservation and
environmental films and new media, with awards for films, websites,
photography and journalism. There will also be seminars, workshops
and networking and pitching sessions.

ahead and recommend composer David Harris, who did the soundtrack for a
doc called SEOUL TRAIN. I haven't worked with him, but the soundtrack
he did for that film was extraordinary and unforgettable!! You can

Hi I'm in the process of directing a documentary about an Iranian
asylum seeker in Britain. I wanted to know if anyone has footage of
Iran such as images of crisis, prisoners, for more information about
the footage please do write to me. The footage will give some visual
context for the reasons he had to leave Iran in 1995. I'm very sorry
to say there is no funding available for the project. Thanks Corine

I just read an article in MovieMaker mag about a new cable show hosted
by Rebecca Carroll (former Independent editor) called Docstock.
The show is on Plum TV, which serves highbrow communities such as
Telluride, Vail, The Hamptons and Nantucket.
It focuses on docs-in-progress, so if you're looking to promote your doc
project to those who may have the cash to help you finish it!!

I've seen a few episodes of Plum TV and it is very well done. The
cool thing is that, after the interview with the filmmaker, it
includes info on the budget and how much remains to be raised, so it
is a strong hint for viewers who have been dazzled by the preview to
contribute to help make the finished product happen.

NOTES ON MARIE MENKEN tells the story of this legendary artist
(1909—1970), a Lithuanian immigrant who became one of New York's
outstanding underground experimental filmmakers of the 1940's through
the 1960's, inspiring artists such as Stan Brakhage, Andy Warhol,
Jonas Mekas, Kenneth Anger and Gerard Malanga. The large (a hefty 6'
2"), loud and tempestuous Menken—reportedly the inspiration for the
character of "Martha" in Edward Albee's play Who's Afraid of Virginia
Woolf—also became a Warhol Superstar, making memorable appearances in
The Life of Juanita Castro and The Chelsea Girls.

Originally an abstract painter and collage artist, Menken produced
nearly two dozen experimental shorts, using a hand-held Bolex to
create rhythmic patterns of light, color, form and texture, visual
poems that extracted beauty from the world around her. NOTES ON MARIE
MENKEN features lengthy excerpts from many of her films as well as
never-before-seen footage by the filmmaker salvaged from basements and
storage vaults, including a camera "duel" for Bolexes on a Brooklyn
rooftop between Menken and Andy Warhol.

Complemented by a jazzy score by New York composer John Zorn, NOTES ON
MARIE MENKEN features interviews with the filmmaker's friends,
relatives and colleagues, including Alfred Leslie, Kenneth Anger,
Gerard Malanga, Peter Kubelka, Mary Woronov and Jonas Mekas. They
discuss Menken's distinctive film technique, her artistic struggle and
personal life—including a night-shift job at Time magazine and her
marriage to filmmaker Willard Maas—and provide colorful reminiscences
of both Menken and the New York art scene of the era.
