Tonight's the night (Thursday, September 22) for Docs in Progress.
Celebrate the official beginning of fall with a unique opportunity to
give feedback to documentary filmmakers on their works in progress.
Tonight's featured films are:

THE BEST PART OF EVERYTHING by Jes Therkelsen
A family faces their hopes, dreams, ambitions, and regrets as the
parents prepare for retirement and an empty nest while their 20-
something children get ready for the real world. This personal film
explores the difficulties associated with adapting to the changing
roles and responsibilities of a typical American family.

CAUGHT IN THE NET by the Institute for Documentary Filmmaking
A decade after “dotcom fever” took over Wall Street, we revisit three
Internet entrepreneurs who became unexpected players in big business
in the 1990s How did these kid millionaires deal with their success
and the subsequent burst of the Net Economy bubble?

This event is open to the public and no reservations are required. A
suggested donation of $5 can be paid in cash at the door. Program
starts at 7:00 and lasts until approximately 9:30 pm. Location is
the Jack Morton Auditorium on the campus of the George Washington
University (805 21st Street at H Street, NW Washington DC). The
Foggy Bottom Metro and several parking garages are convenient to the
venue and street parking is sometimes available after 6:30 pm. Note
that street closures related to this weekend's IMF/World Bank
meetings are not scheduled to take effect until Friday.

Docs in Progress workshops are organized by the Docs in Progress
organization and sponsored by The Documentary Center at the George
Washington University.

I am currently working on a documentary about an Iraq war
veteran, who shot his own video footage in Iraq, and has since
been speaking out against the war, including in the local
Binghamton, NY area, Crawford, TX for Camp Casey, etc.

Are there any grants or film financers interested in the current
political climate? I've been contacting everyone I know in the
"industry" and few people know of what I should do. This is my
first feature and it's (as of now) been financed by myself, which
is a fun feat making well under a living wage, let me tell you!

But I have a good fifty hours shot so far and am finally
confident in what I have thusfar. If anyone's interested in
hearing more at all, let me know.

Hi all,

I've created a video blog and am sending out the call for submissions.

Little While is a repository for short, non-fiction moments. Examples
of what we're looking for include (but are not limited to):clips of:
awkward dancing, smoke rising from the ground, objects inflating,
motivational speakers, public displays of affection, and short order
cooks.

This is also an opportunity to share clips from works-in-progress or

hello

anyone out there with an HD camera willing to get involved with
the production of a doc. i'm in NYC and am working on the
preproduction stage. i'm looking for someone willing to work with
no budget. someone who is looking for more experience or wants to
build their portfolio.

the first stage would be to shoot enough footage to put together a
trailer. that would require about 3-4 days of interviews. the rest
of the footage will come from archived news footage. so the work
is not that intense at the moment. all under controlled
environments. mostly just some interviews.

WASHINGTON DC: DOCS IN PROGRESS THIS WEDNESDAY

Docs in Progress returns this Wednesday, November 16 at 7:00 pm to
give Washingtonians an opportunity to preview new documentaries and
offer the filmmakers feedback on their works in progress. This month
we feature Catherine Mattingly's YALE RUSSIAN CHORUS about the famed
choral group and Hugh Drescher's WE CAME TO REMEMBER about a reunion
of one company of World War II veterans.

The program will take place at the Jack Morton Auditorium in the
Media and Public Affairs Building of George Washington University
(805 21st Street at H Street, NW Washington DC). Closest Metro:
Foggy Bottom. GW parking garages on H and I Streets. Suggested

Docs in Progress is currently soliciting short (30 minutes or less)
documentary works in progress for our next workshop in Washington DC
in January. These can be documentaries intended to be shorts or
segments of a longer documentary which give a good indication of
where the filmmaker is going with the longer piece. Please no
trailers. (We will also be looking for longer works for our spring
workshops, so if you have one, let us know.)

At Docs in Progress workshops, documentary filmmakers screen their
works in progress to a general audience and get feedback through a
moderated critique session. As those who have participated can
attest, these workshops are one of the best ways to get free feedback
and move forward with a project, especially when you may feel stuck
or simply want a reality check on your work before submitting it to
festivals or pitching it for television.

The submission deadline for January is December 1. The first step is
to submit a brief description of the film online at
<http://www.docsinprogress.org/submission.htm> and we will follow up
with information on how to submit a tape or DVD.

Docs in Progress workshops are coordinated by Docs in Progress and
sponsored by The Documentary Center at the George Washington
University. The workshops are held six times a year
(January/March/May/July/September/November) at the Jack Morton
Auditorium on the campus of the George Washington University.

While we give special attention to filmmakers based in the Washington
DC region, we accept submissions from everywhere as long as
filmmakers are willing to cover their own expenses to Washington to
attend the workshop.

My friend, Doug Hawes Davis's film festival, has really taken off. In
its third year, it has received over 800 entries. It is held in the
gorgeous Wilma theatre in downtown Missoula Montana. Missoula is a
vivbrant university town with an active film going populace. Last
year they did a retrospective on the Maysles brothers. Albert wasn't
able to attend because of the Cristo deal in Central Park. Doug is a
prolific documentary film maker. He is now doing a project on the
bison killing controversy outside Yellowstone park.

Ah, but some of us need to cast actors and voiceover artists for our
documentaries. I am in the midst of this and wish I'd been to such a
seminar before running current round of auditions...Which brings me
to a similar event, being sponsored by Women in Film and Video in
Washington DC:

WORKING WITH TALENT - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1
Women in Film and Video's ongoing "Wednesday One" professional
development series returns on Wednesday, March 1 with a program
focused on how to work with the amazing wealth of talent in the DC
area. This panel will help producers and directors better understand
how to get the right actor for a project, whether it's a fiction
film, commercial, industrial, documentary reenactment, or voiceover
narration. What can you tell from a head-shot or demo reel? What's
involved with working with a casting agency? How do you run an
effective audition? What do you need to think about contracts and
unions? And, once you get your talent on board, what kind of
direction do they need from you?

Panelists will include actor Michael Gabel, producer/director
Virginia Williams, entertainment attorney Kurt Klaus, TV One Casting
Director Nikki Webber, and local SAG/AFTRA rep Jane Love.

Docs in Progress returns on Tuesday, March 28 with politics and music
on the mind. If you want to be a part of what has become one of the
most provocative and fun film discussion events in Washington DC, you

Every other month, Docs in Progress showcases works in progress by
local and visiting documentary filmmakers. Following a screening of
each film, moderators and Docs in Progress founders Adele Schmidt and
Erica Ginsberg lead the audience in a feedback session with the

OUR WORLD IS ROUND
A 90min documentary to be distributed worldwide about…

32 Independent Filmmakers following
32 Worldwide Fans supporting each of the 32 World Cup Teams,
But as with any knockout competition- there can only be one Winner!

We are searching the planet for 32 talented student or independent
filmmakers to compete for a place in what is possibly the biggest
global independent collaborative film project ever about soccer fans
and produce sections for a 90 min documentary feature film.

The score is this: each of the 32 filmmakers or production teams
need to follow one fan of one of the 32 qualifying nations for the
duration their teams last in the world cup. Your subject fan (could
even be yourself) should be passionate about football and be
following the World Cup in an extraordinary or special way. As soon
as the fan's team gets knocked out of the cup, he/r and the following
filmmaker drop out of the documentary. A final statement from
filmmaker and fan can be recorded but the producers won’t accept any
additional footage after the team has left the tournament. You send
a copy of your tapes to the ‘Our world is Round’ production team as
well as an edit log of preferred shots you want to see in the film
and then we splice the whole 90mins together with your section
included!

Filmmakers will be credited in the documentary as directors for their
sections when:
-The fan is filmed during the entire time his or her team lasts in
the World Cup
-The footage produced is of usable quality – Good sound is the most
important!
-You don’t film international football stars or go for any
professional match footage! This film is purely about the fans and
must focus on them and we will not use any such footage in the final
film.

4 Good reasons to get involved in this documentary:
1) Participants will have their own profile page on the Our World is
Round website and their own forum section where they can post updates
on their progress!

2) Media solicited contract that guarantees the filmmakers a certain
share of any takings and profits made from this film.

3) Media coverage about the project, International Film Festival
distribution, prospectus worldwide cinema distribution.

4) Being part of a totally unique and special film event and adding
it to your very own portfolio!

1. The country you are from and a short 100 word profile of yourself
(including photograph) with details of previous projects/portfolio

SCREENING FOR ACADEMY CONSIDERATION (APRIL 28-MAY 5 in L.A.)

As many of you know, the cost for a single independent producer to
rent a theater in LA or NY for 7 days (in order to be eligible for
Academy consideration) can run up to $15,000. We want to release
our film on DVD as soon as possible, yet still be eligible for Academy
consideration. Because of that, we have decided to organize a Los
Angeles screening ourselves and invite other filmmakers to share the
cost.

We can show films from 10:00am until 10:00pm at Laemmle’s and each
film will be screened once a day for 7 consecutive days (thus meeting
the requirement for Academy consideration). The cost will be split by
all the filmmakers who participate. This will happen on April 28th
through May 5th. So if your documentary, short or feature is ready,
please contact us immediately to reserve a slot. We will be working
with Rick Pollard at Laemmle's to make this event happen.


The 7 day screening in LA or NY is just one of a long list of
requirements the Academy has. More information can be found here:

In order to screen at Laemmle's during the run we have plannede (April
28-May 5), certain requirements must be met.

Here are the requirements:

1) Your film can be either Feature or Short Documentary.

2) It needs to be 24-or 48-frame progressive scan digital format ONLY
(minimum native resolution 1280 by 1024 pixels). If you do not have
it on this type of format and you need to transfer it, we know some
great places to get it done.

4) The cost is estimated around $700-$800 per 15 minutes. So if your
doc is 60 minutes you are looking at about $2800-$3200, which is much
cheaper than $15,000, if you were to do it by yourself.

5) We are accepting films from all over the world.

6) If you are not in LA and would like to participate, you can contact
Tim Jack at 818 728-0720. He will be in charge of handling out-of-town
films. (there is an extra fee for this).

This could be a great way to meet some of the requirements without the
extraordinary cost. Let's all help each other!

tragedy of September 11th, 2001. Some of them have supported their
child’s patriotic service and sacrifice with pride, while others have
condemned the war and its cause, angry at those responsible for

FILM INDEPENDENT'S 2006 PRODUCERS LAB DEADLINE EXTENDED TO AUGUST 28,
2006

Film Independent is now accepting submissions for its annual Producers
Lab that will take place in Los Angeles during October and November
2006. The deadline for submissions is August 28, 2006 (postmarked).
Sponsored by Technicolor, Film Independent's Producers Lab is an
intensive seven-week program designed to help filmmakers working in
both fiction and documentary develop skills as creative independent
producers. Lab fellows develop a strategy and formal action plan for
bringing their projects to fruition -including a budget, schedule, and
business plan. Fellows have one-on-one meetings with established
producers, directors, and other industry professionals who act as
advisors to them on their specific projects.

A maximum of ten producers are accepted into the program each year.
Some projects that have gone through the Labs are the following: So
Yong Kim's Sundance-winning film, In Between Days; Jessica Sanders'
After Innocence, short listed for the Academy Awards' documentary
category; Andrea Millers' Dark Matter, currently in production with

The Program in Film and Media Studies in the Department of Art &
Art History at Stanford University is seeking candidates for a
tenure-track Assistant Professor position with an emphasis in the
field of Documentary Film and Video Production. The appointment is

The successful candidate will teach at the graduate level in the
M.F.A. Program in Documentary Film and Video and at the

What: Wildlife Asia - an international wildlife and environmental
film festival
Where: Singapore

The new wildlife film festival, Wildlife Asia, will take place in
Singapore from March 13 to 16, with support from the Singapore

Hi I'm in the process of directing a documentary about an Iranian
asylum seeker in Britain. I wanted to know if anyone has footage of
Iran such as images of crisis, prisoners, for more information about
the footage please do write to me. The footage will give some visual
context for the reasons he had to leave Iran in 1995. I'm very sorry

I just read an article in MovieMaker mag about a new cable show hosted
by Rebecca Carroll (former Independent editor) called Docstock.
The show is on Plum TV, which serves highbrow communities such as
Telluride, Vail, The Hamptons and Nantucket.

I've seen a few episodes of Plum TV and it is very well done. The
cool thing is that, after the interview with the filmmaker, it
includes info on the budget and how much remains to be raised, so it
is a strong hint for viewers who have been dazzled by the preview to
contribute to help make the finished product happen.

NOTES ON MARIE MENKEN tells the story of this legendary artist
(1909—1970), a Lithuanian immigrant who became one of New York's
outstanding underground experimental filmmakers of the 1940's through
the 1960's, inspiring artists such as Stan Brakhage, Andy Warhol,
Jonas Mekas, Kenneth Anger and Gerard Malanga. The large (a hefty 6'
2"), loud and tempestuous Menken—reportedly the inspiration for the
character of "Martha" in Edward Albee's play Who's Afraid of Virginia
Woolf—also became a Warhol Superstar, making memorable appearances in
The Life of Juanita Castro and The Chelsea Girls.

Originally an abstract painter and collage artist, Menken produced
nearly two dozen experimental shorts, using a hand-held Bolex to
create rhythmic patterns of light, color, form and texture, visual
poems that extracted beauty from the world around her. NOTES ON MARIE
MENKEN features lengthy excerpts from many of her films as well as
never-before-seen footage by the filmmaker salvaged from basements and
storage vaults, including a camera "duel" for Bolexes on a Brooklyn
rooftop between Menken and Andy Warhol.

Complemented by a jazzy score by New York composer John Zorn, NOTES ON
MARIE MENKEN features interviews with the filmmaker's friends,
relatives and colleagues, including Alfred Leslie, Kenneth Anger,
Gerard Malanga, Peter Kubelka, Mary Woronov and Jonas Mekas. They
discuss Menken's distinctive film technique, her artistic struggle and
personal life—including a night-shift job at Time magazine and her

VIDSTER THIS ONE

The first vidster video festival will take place in Hawaii on Labor
Day weekend
2007.
Vidster This is based on the pixelvision video festival that takes
place every NOVEMBER in Venice CA and tours to Santa Monica, San
Francisco and Echo Park every year.
In keeping with the spirit of PXL THIS,
www.indiespace.com/pxlthis
there are no entry fees for submission although donations are
appreciated.
Vidster is a camcorder sold by Mattel designed for children. In the
seventeen
years since the introduction of the pixelvision 2000 camera, the
pixelvision
camera has become a highly sought after camera by filmmakers who have
embraced
its technological shortcomings, low resolution black and white video
with an
image that doesn’t even fill the screen and whose audio track has the
background
sound resembling a vacuum cleaner. Most pixelvision cameras are sold
via auction
websites like eBay. The cameras sell anywhere from 75 dollars to 600
dollars and
they are no longer being manufactured.
The Vidster camera has the same limitations of low-resolution imaging
but this
time the picture is in color and the sound quality is much improved.
The camera
also has a rudimentary zoom feature. The vidster requires only four
AA
batteries to power up compared to the six needed for a pixelvision
camera. In
the spirit of the pixelvision camera, the Vidster camera has a
difficult to use
battery compartment. You need a Philips screwdriver to remove the
battery cover.
Vidster camera through seemingly in short supply as seen through the
bidding on
eBay is very much available in stores like Toys R Us and Circuit City.
The list
price has been raised 20 dollars from 59 dollars to 79 dollars but
this camera
is much more affordable than the Pixelvision camera is now. Buy two
cameras, one
to use and another as a spare.

The vidster camera has been designed to be very friendly for computer
editing
systems.
The video or still pictures are recorded to SD memory cards. You can
expand the
video storage capacity of the card by switching to a higher memory
sized card.
The camera comes with a 32 mb card, enough for six minutes of video.
Although the camera only comes with video editing software for Windows
Computers,
Mac users do not need to worry. All a Mac user needs to do is to
attach the
camera via the USB port; Power on, switch to playback and the camera
appears as
a drive called “No name”. Open the drive and drag the contents of the
folder
100Media to a folder in your computer. You can easily import these AVI
clips to
Final Cut Pro or iMovie.
The AVI QuickTime video files are 320 by 240, the perfect size for the
iPod or
UTube.

The submission requirements:

Videos should be doubled in size to 640 by 480 pixels.
Video should be outputted in the Quicktime DV codec and burned as a
file onto
either a CD or DVD ROM.
Please keep your videos under twenty minutes. The festival reserves
the right to
request an edit to a shorter length or to show an excerpt at the
festival.
Please do not send your only copy or Master tape.

All genres are open to Vidster video submissions: Documentary,
narrative,
personal, rants raves.
I also need help in spreading this call for entries far and wide so
please forward to all media makers.

AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER (2004, 26 min.) by Irina Gedrovich
Gerhard M. was an amateur photographer sent to the Eastern Front as a German soldier. He took along a camera to record his combat experiences as he and his unit marched into the Soviet Union. Based on his wartime diary and photo album, Gerhard M. was later tried and executed for war crimes by the Soviet Union.

Fulbright Scholar Program for US Faculty and Professionals
The Fulbright Scholar Program is offering 12 lecturing, research or
combined lecturing/research awards in film studies during the 2008-
2009 academic year. U.S. Fulbright Scholars in 150 countries and all
regions of the world enjoy an experience of a lifetime, one that
provides a broad cultural perspective on their academic disciplines
and connects them with colleagues at institutions around the globe.

Awards range from two months to an academic year. Faculty and
professionals in film studies may apply not only for awards
specifically in their field, but also for one of the many “All
Discipline” awards open to any field. Grants are awarded to faculty
of all academic ranks, including adjunct and emeritus. In most
countries lecturing is in English, though awards in Latin America,
Francophone Africa, and the Middle East may require proficiency in
another language.

The application deadline for Fulbright traditional lecturing and

We are seeking an Outreach Director for our PBS/Sundance funded
documentary film, PROJECT KASHMIR.

From directors Senain Kheshgi and Geeta V. Patel comes PROJECT KASHMIR
– a feature documentary in which the directors, two American friends
from opposite sides of the divide, investigate the war in Kashmir and
find their friendship tested over deeply rooted religious biases they
never had to face in the US. PROJECT KASHMIR explores war between
countries and war within oneself by delving into the fraught lives of
young people caught in the social/political conflict of one of the
most beautiful, and most deadly, places on earth – Kashmir.

The goal of the PROJECT KASHMIR outreach strategy is to create
awareness and increase understanding of the conflict in Kashmir; to
generate interfaith dialogues in the United States and to encourage
communities to become active in organizations working to promote
conflict resolution, religious tolerance and peace building in regions
of conflict, especially Kashmir.

The Digital/Online Marketing & Outreach Director will work closely
with director/producers Senain Kheshgi and Geeta Patel to develop and
implement online PR, advocacy, and release strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
o Develop and implement online PR and content strategy for PROJECT
KASHMIR Campaign to amplify our reach online and to grow our e-
subscriber list ?

o Coordinate and e-produce house parties around the world.
o Research and implement web-based PR and marketing activities
including blogs, tagging, social networking, viral marketing, search
engine marketing, text messaging and other forms of electronic
communications.?

o Monitoring blogs and Web sites (South Asian, Conflict Resolution,
film, faith, human rights/social change etc.) to identify
opportunities for PROJECT KASHMIR campaign.?

o Update and maintain PROJECT KASHMIR presence on social networking
sites like MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, etc.?

o Develop new Web and organizational partnerships to publicize PROJECT
KASHMIR campaign - link exchanges with other sites, mailing lists,
website discussion areas, online newsletters, web press, etc.?

o Oversee Web site administration including attracting more user-
contributed content, updating sections of the Web site and overseeing
the upload of videos ?

o Create and send email newsletter ?

o Manage email database ?

o Set up affiliate marketing relationships and liaison with DVD
distributor and fulfillment house

o Evaluate and report on the popularity and effectiveness of the
campaign and Web site traffic?

o Additional duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate will have:?

o Enthusiasm and passion for PROJECT KASHMIR, the issues at its core,
and spreading the message around the world.?

o Interest in online engagement, public interest advocacy or
campaigns, film, as well as experience in an Internet or web-based
role, including online organizing, Web site development, implementing
online campaigns, online PR, blogger outreach.

o Familiarity with Kashmiri, Indian, Pakistani, Hindu, Muslim
communities is a bonus.

o Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel),
web publishing tools, as well as Internet research skills?

o Ability to juggle multiple tasks under deadlines

receive the subject's contact information, and a one-page paper from
the customer that describes questions or topics that the customer
would like raised. The shoot style consists of an informal interview.
The videographer will sit in front of (and to the side of) their Mini
DV camera which is mounted on a stationary tripod. No lights are
required. The finished unedited miniDv tape will be sent directly to
Sagas who will pay within three days of receipt and review. Sagas
will pay $250 for each interview with an additional premium applied in
certain areas. Sagas has created a variety of training and self-help
tools, including demo interviews conducted by Hoffman. These should
help you to become a more skilled interviewer.

The Tank is a non-profit visual and performing arts organization
located in the heart of Tribeca that is currently accepting rolling
submissions for our two monthly film series New York Experimental and
New Documentaries.

Film @ The Tank
The Tank's film and video series screen new work from emerging
filmmakers and video artists, as well as films and videos from
established independent image-makers. We screen all genres and lengths
on 16mm, DV, DVD, and VHS, including live multimedia performance events.
The mission of The Tank is to provide a welcoming, creative,
collaborative, and affordable environment for artists and activists
engaged in the pursuit of new ideas. Through a wide range of low-cost,
high-concept arts and public affairs programming, The Tank seeks to
cultivate a new generation of audience for live performance, civic
discourse, and the work of emerging artists.

Submissions
To submit a film for consideration, please mail a DVD (if possible
without menus), pertinent production information, a description of the
work and a short artist biography. The suggested submission fee is
$5.00, but no artist will be turned away due to lack of funds. For

Manhattan filmmaker in her 40s,
exploring what she cheerfully calls her “messed-up self” required
a bit more input.
In “Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman,” Ms. Fox takes her issues
on the road,
soliciting advice from female friends in more than a dozen
countries.
In the process, she learns that she is not unique.

Part personal diary, part transglobal slumber party, “Flying” is a
six-hour exploration of modern
womanhood humming with talk of men. During kitchen-table chats and
late-night meltdowns,
women as diverse as an Egyptian journalist and an Indian civil
rights lawyer struggle to
control their finances and their fertility.

Turning narcissism inside out, Ms. Fox uses her own romantic
crisis — a rocky impasse
between a married South African lover and a sweet Swiss boyfriend
— to connect,
sometimes hilariously, with women whose choices are far less
luxurious. Her humility
is the film’s strength; employing a technique she calls “passing
the camera,”
the filmmaker shares point of view to create a living
conversation.

By turns playful, sexy, tragic and contemplative, “Flying” is an
addictive soap
about sexuality and sisterhood. And if that makes the average
