One more week to go for DOCUWEEKS in New York and LA. There are some really great films playing that y'all should go and see. This week in NY you can catch MY PERESTROIKA by D-Word's own Robin Hessman, as well as WASTE LAND (Lucy Walker) and BUDRUS (Julia Bacha) in NY. Just some of my favorites. Have also heard amazing things about FREEDOM RIDERS.

In LA, you can see STEAM OF LIFE, in which naked Norwegian men discuss life in saunas (believe me, it's amazing), SUMMER PASTURE, in which you can witness up close remote rural life in the mountains of Tibet and learn about the value of yak milk as a moisturizer, and you can see THIS WAY OF LIFE, which I highly recommend for all phobic parents. This New Zealand family lives by a whole different set of rules, and it's an eye opening opportunity to examine how parenting is approached in this country.

These are just some of the highlights of a really great crop of films. And as we all know, unless we ourselves get our butts into theaters to support our fellow docmakers, how can we expect others to do the same?

I highly recommend a visit to the Arclight in LA or the IFC Center in NY. It's like taking a vacation without every leaving home.

INTERNSHIP

We are currently in postproduction on a feature doc with the working title "Give Up Tomorrow." It is a murder-mystery social-justice story set in the Philippines. Our offices located in Park Slope.

We’re seeking an intern to assist with post-production. Responsibilities will vary depending on individual’s skills but will include sub-titling and media management using Final Cut. There is a possibility to assist with graphics for anyone with Photoshop experience or an interest in learning it.

The position is unpaid, but we’ll cover transportation and working meals. School credit, general mentorship/advice, and credit on the final film will certainly be provided to excellent interns. The ideal candidate will be: bright, enthusiastic, self-motivated, and patient, – very attentive to detail, interested in the editorial process and documentary filmmaking – able to give 10-20 hours per week to the project (schedule flexible, open to discussion). Photoshop experience a plus.

Lost my shooter, and am scrambling to find someone with at least minimal documentary shooting experience and their own camera to shoot for a few hours this Friday evening 8/13 in LA. Shoot will be at a benefit concert @ the Greek Theatre (Carlos Santana, Zach de la Rocha and others are performing, more details @ http://www.doloreshuerta.org/weavingmovements/). This is a DEFERRED PAY job for a documentary that is partially funded and is in the process of raising remaining funds. Screen credit and eternal thanks guaranteed.

FULL FRAME'S 2011 NEW DOCS CALL FOR ENTRIES OPENS AUGUST 15

Full Frame exhibits nearly 100 documentary films in various categories. By completing the online application, you will be submitting to NEW DOCS, the festival’s competitive program which includes films completed in the last two years. In 2010, 60 films were selected for NEW DOCS from 1200 entries. NEW DOCS are eligible for a number of awards in various categories. The 2010 festival offered 8 awards, with prizes totaling over $50,000 in cash and services. The 2011 festival will take place Thursday, April 14, through Sunday, April 17.

Regular Deadline: October 15, 2010 ($40)
Late Deadline: November 30, 2010 ($60)

All departments at the PBS series POV, Interactive and Community Engagement and Programming/Production are looking to staff up with bright motivated, students who are passionate about all aspects of the documentary film world.

Interns will have real responsibilities and year after year make important contributions to the success of the series; from cutting web content to working with our community engagement partners to assisting with our Editorial Committee- the penultimate step in selecting films for POV 2011/2012 interns are an integral part of POV life. We’re looking for students who have experience with Final Cut, Compressor, DVD Studio Pro and Photoshop BUT we are happy and willing to train the right candidate. Prospective interns must be quick learners, unafraid to ask questions and open to performing a variety of tasks. A sense of humor, sharp wit and sarcasm are a plus.

Interns receive on air credit and transportation assistance based on the number of days they spend on site.
