Hello –

I am a novelist (Bittersweet; Tuttle Publishing) and memoirist (Daughter of Heaven: A Memoir with Earthly Recipes; Arcade Publishing) living in New York City.

Recently, I was blessed a wealth of visual and aural material about four Chinese-American sisters who became a jazz vocal quartet and performed on the Broadway stage and Hollywood screen during the 30s and 40s. So the book I was planning to write about them has become a documentary film instead. As a first-time filmmaker, I have completed videotaped interviews of the four sisters and a rough cut.

Now I am hoping to receive some advice about how I might go about obtaining rights, permissions, licensing for a number of songs and archival film clips that are part and parcel of my 1-hour film – as well as learn what the fees would be.

Looking forward to being part of your community, and thank you for this wonderful forum,

Leslie Li

Hello friends--
I'm in my fifth year of living in Cameroon, West Africa. I'm a documentary filmmaker turned full-time volunteer. But it's time to reach new horizons with our documentary "Green Eyes in Africa." It's a ready-to go project with almost all of the work done. I consider what we have a "rough draft." I just need a production company who would like to take it and make it bigger/better and incorporate the rest of the story. Then move on to distribution. The story is unbelievable. www.youtube.com/GreenEyesinAfrica has the trailer, etc. I hope to find people who want to make this happen...our website is www.GreenEyesinAfrica.org and my email is RyaninNev@aol.com.

Hello –

So far I have been primarily a DP almost exclusively for docs, including a feature that's premiering in Sundance this year ("Countdown to Zero" for Participant). Have been involved with Doculink since it was just an idea, and have heard about this place for a long time, but for some reason am only now joining in! Seems great though and I look forward to mingling, especially as I'm moving into a place of producing as well. Thanks!

Welcome, Bryan, and congrats on Sundance. Hope you get to go and see it with an audience on the big screen – nothing like it. You, too, should sign up for full membership here. It's easy and free.

Hi there,

I heard about D-Word from a director while chatting with him at his premiere and signed up the next day. A month later, I'm finally introducing myself.

I'm an aspiring doc filmmaker in the Washington DC metro area. A former Air Force and DOD producer-director, I earned a Master's certificate from the Institute for Documentary Filmmaking at George Washington University under award-winning filmmaker Nina Gilden Seavey. I also have an MA in video production. Last year, I produced my first short doc (17 mins) from script to screen, "DC LSIC: A Little Justice Goes A Long Way," for DC non-profit legal aid agency and law clinic DC Law Students in Court. You can view it on my Web site at www.amicusmedia.net. If anyone views it, I'd love some feedback.

I've been wanting to produce another doc, but have lost my momentum since I haven't been able to find a topic that excites me. Life has gotten in the way as well. Am hoping associating with other doc filmmakers will inspire me. In the meantime, I'm a freelance Final Cut Pro editor and taking some home improvement classes at my local community college for fun.

Hi there Simin – with your background, feel free to apply to become a full member

Not sure that the Newport Beach Festival is big on docs, to be honest – do you have a particular reason for wanting to apply there?

In reply to Tom Dziedzic's post on Mon 21 Dec 2009 :

Tom, thanks. I've heard of the group (and WIFV of which I'm a listserv lurking member). My Doc Center class project was shown there a couple years ago. A new year is coming, so I'm reaching out in the hopes of expanding my horizons and becoming more active. I'll definitely become more active with DIP. Again, thanks!

A warm welcome to Stephanie and Simin. Don't let a little thing called life ever get in the way of your doc work, Stephanie ;-)

Hello guys,
nice to finally have the time to introduce myself... Excuse me for the delay, but I was lost in an edit when I first signed up!
I'm Marco Della Coletta and I'm an Italian/Dutch filmmaker based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I'm also a partner of Godmother Films, a creative production company that tries to focus on documentary and socially relevant advertising. In the past 2 years, among other stuff we produced one of the shorts of the "Why Democracy?" series: Interferenze (about Italian television pirates).
About a month ago, I met some of you during the Idfa dinner at the Mezrab, here in Amsterdam... I must say you looked like you are a very interesting bunch of people and I'm really looking forward to join the conversation and get to know more of you online.
Cheers!
Marco
PS. If you like you can see most of our work on www.godmotherfilms.com

I make documentary films on various themes for propagating the message of sustainable innovations that leads to sustainable development.

Two documentary films directed by me have participated in two International Festivals in 2009 organized by the Government of West Bengal.

The documentary on sustainable effort of tribal women in social forestry titled Tribal women, afforestation and sustainability was selected for screening in the Short & Documentary films Section of 15th Kolkata Film Festival.

Earlier, the documentary on establishing the first Small & Medium Forest Enterprise in India titled Artistic approach was selected for 8th International Social Communication Cinema Conference 2009.

Hi fellow filmmakers. I just arrived in San Francisco a few months ago and hoping to connect with other documentary filmmakers in the Bay Area. I would also love to get involved with any documentary film events in the city if there are any, or help to organize some of my own. Cheers!

Hello D-Word Community!

My name is Thomas C. Gass and I have always been fascinated by music, voices and languages. After graduation in "Music and Performing Arts" in Germany as well as several years of practical work as actor and musician, I started to concentrate more and more on voice acting and directing.

This involves productions as voice over artist for cinema-, television- and radio commercials, off-voice narration, radio plays, Podcasts, CD- und DVD-productions, internet applications, multimedia productions, as well as text doctoring, direction of voice recording and dubbing.

Thanks to my own SaVoA accredited digital recording studio with ISDN (all available codecs), SourceConnect and Phonepatch I'm availabled worldwide for VO recordings in German or English if you're in need of a "German accent" ;-)
