Annual Fellowship Provides Extensive Opportunities for Emerging Documentary Film Editors;
Open Call for Submissions Begins AUGUST 1, 2012

LOS ANGELES / NEW YORK â€“ The Karen Schmeer Film Editing Fellowship assists emerging documentary editors by supporting and developing their talent, expanding their creative community, and furthering their career aspirations. In conjunction with American Cinema Editors (ACE) and other partners, the Fellowship, in its third year, offers a wide array of opportunities. The Fellowship is targeted at documentary editors; fiction experience is welcome, though not required.
Past recipients were Erin Casper (â€œOur Schoolâ€) and Lindsay Utz (â€œBullyâ€).
Awarded once a year, the Fellowship honors the memory of gifted editor Karen Schmeer (â€œFog of Warâ€; â€œFast, Cheap & Out of Controlâ€; â€œBobby Fischer Against the Worldâ€), who was killed in a hit-and-run car accident at age 39, on January 29, 2010.

â€¢ ACE EDITOR MENTORSHIP â€“ with guidance from American Cinema Editors, the Fellow will be given a mentorship with an established ACE editor who fits the Fellowâ€™s particular interests.

KAREN SCHMEER, A.C.E., was an award-winning film editor whose work included Errol Morrisâ€™ â€œThe Fog of Warâ€ (Academy Award Winner for Best Documentary), â€œMr. Death,â€ and â€œFast, Cheap and Out of Control.â€ She edited â€œSketches of Frank Gehry,â€ directed by Sydney Pollack, â€œThe Same River Twice,â€ â€œMy Father the Genius,â€ and â€œAmerican Experience: A Brilliant Madness.â€ Her fiction film â€œAmerican Sonâ€ premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. For the HBO film â€œSergio,â€ Karen won the Best Editing Award at Sundance in 2009. Karen was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, and attended Boston University. On her way home from editing Liz Garbusâ€™ â€œBobby Fischer Against the World,â€ Karen was struck and killed by a car fleeing a robbery in New York City on January 29, 2010.
