Scottish Documentary Institute is pleased to announce that Bridging the Gap 8 is now open for applications!
We are looking for Scottish-based filmmakers to make 10 minute documentaries on the theme of SHIFT. We want films to be told in the first person â€“ either by the filmmaker or the main character.
12 ideas will be short-listed on the basis of the proposal and supporting materials. In the following weeks they will be developed through weekend workshops so that they can be pitched to a panel of experts who will commission the final 5 projects in December 2010. The films, to be delivered by April 2011, are intended for distribution in cinemas and festivals.
Who can apply?
This scheme is open to all filmmakers based in Scotland, and particularly aims to bridge the gap between training/graduation and a first commission, and those filmmakers who have not made films for the big screen. We are especially interested in filmmakers from diverse and under-represented backgrounds. We cannot accept applications from students in full time education.

We are happy to announce a partnership with Women Make Movies for our September DocuClub. The screening will take place on Wednesday, September 29, 7 p.m., at 92YTribeca (Take 1, A/C/E to Canal Street).
We will screen a rough cut of FLAT DADDY [www.flatdaddydocumentary.com] by Nara Garber and Betsy Nagler. As military families across the country continue to endure the deployment of loved ones to Afghanistan and Iraq, many attempt to fill the void with â€œFlat Daddiesâ€ and â€œHeroes on a Stick,â€ life-sized cardboard cutouts of their husbands, wives, sons and daughters serving overseas. Using these two-dimensional surrogates as a connecting thread, the documentary tells the stories of four such families, from suburban Minnesota, the Bronx, Las Vegas and rural Maine, as they unfold over the course of a year. Each family represents a unique perspective on the war effort and the difficulties of deployment; together, they weave a nuanced narrative of how military families are coping in post-9/11 America as combat operations enter their tenth year.
Co-Director/Producer/Director of Photography Nara Garber divides her time between directing, producing, shooting, and editing. Often wearing many hats on the same project, Garber produces educational documentaries for Carnegie Hall and has helmed productions for major corporations while also collaborating on provocative PSAs for The Point Foundation and the political satirists, Billionaires for Bush. As a DP, she has dragged camera equipment across five continents in pursuit of the perfect shot. In 2009, a documentary assignment took her on a tour of American military bases in Iraq where many of the men and women serving volunteered the opinion that deployment is harder on the families back home. Garber hopes that FLAT DADDY will help bring that statement to life for a larger audience.
Co-Director/Producer/Editor Betsy Nagler is a Brooklyn-based writer and filmmaker. Her producing and directing credits include work for the website of the Working Families Party, for the television show BLUEâ€™S CLUES, and short narrative films shown at the Seattle and Chicago Film Festivals. In 2005, she completed â€˜DO, a documentary on how people feel about their hair that received funding from the New York State Council on the Arts through the Brooklyn Arts Council Community Arts Regrant Program. She and Nara Garber then received a NYSCA Individual Artists' Grant for FLAT DADDY in 2008. Nagler earned her B.A. at Stanford and her M.F.A. at New York University.
For her first film, Producer Peggy Sutton directed and produced SQUONKUMENTARY. Selected for the 2005 New York IFP Market, the documentary also screened at the Three Rivers Film Festival, Rehoboth Beach International Film Festival and the 2006 Bend Film Festival. Over the past 18 years, her work as a script supervisor has ranged from big budget movies like MEN IN BLACK II to indies such as POLLOCK.
FLAT DADDY is a fiscally sponsored project of Women Make Movies.
Our moderator will be Rose Vincelli, the Program Manager for the Independent Filmmaker Project [www.ifp.org], specifically focusing on curating and producing the Independent Filmmaker Labs, an immersive workshop assisting first-time Documentary and Narrative feature directors with distribution and exhibition strategies, as well as the Project Forum of Independent Film Week. From 2005-07, she was a programmer for the SILVERDOCS Documentary Festival, helping to grow the festival in its inaugural years and working primarily to curate the Shorts Competition. Vincelli recently produced the short documentaries TRANSPOSITION and NO ONE WANTS TO EAT THE PARSLEY. She lives and cooks in Brooklyn.

I'd like to find an editor in the next 2-3 weeks, give you the footage to watch, and then work with you to wrap this puppy up before the end of 2010. I know what stories the footage is ready to tell, but I don't have enough experience to do it. I need an experienced editor who has sophisticated story-telling skills (some of the stories are quite sensitive), great technical ability (FCP), and a strong belief that all kids can learn and achieve at high levels if they are given the chance. Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, the premier venue for nonfiction film in the American West, is seeking submissions for its eighth annual event. From February 11-20, 2011 the festival will screen 100+ films, including world and U.S. premieres, classics, rare and experimental works on Montana's largest screen at the historic Wilma Theater in downtown Missoula, Montana. In addition to ten days of screenings, the event will feature many public and VIP events including panel discussions, galas, receptions and networking round-tables.
The competitive event is open to non-fiction films and videos of all genres, subject matter, lengths and production dates. Awards and cash prizes will be given for Best Documentary Feature (over 50 minutes), Best Documentary Short (15-50 minutes), Best Mini-Doc (under 15 minutes) and best documentary about the American West (the Big Sky Award).

Docs In Progress returns this Friday, September 24 with Trailer Night. You will be able to provide feedback on documentary trailers and might even be able to get feedback on one of your own since we've got one open film slot. Read on for details.
This workshop-style screening program allows filmmakers who may be at an earlier stage of development with their films to benefit by the moderated feedback of audiences who have traditionally provided feedback on full rough cuts. The filmmakers are looking for audience feedback not only on the effectiveness of the trailer itself, but on the concepts of their films – tremendously helpful as they continue in production and post-production of their films. The evening is being moderated by Erica Ginsberg (Executive Director) and Adele Schmidt (Program Advisor) from Docs In Progress. This program is organized by Docs In Progress and sponsored by The Documentary Center at the George Washington University.

MediaGroove LLC is seeking a Associate Producer with a strong business background to help project manage and coordinate resources for our documentary Get It All Out â€“ a feature-length story about the life of a late, charismatic, yet unknown Pittsburgh musician/ vocalist / poet/ humanitarian and the percussive post-punk/ jazz/ worldbeat/ avant-funk band he was in during the early 1980s. Our protagonist was truly a likable, inspired character, and it doesnâ€™t hurt that he was a compassionate human being who could actually sing and write decent lyrics. If you have experience in collaborating on dynamic teams, contributing your best ideas, are not afraid of hard work and take pride in getting things done â€“ we should talk!
In short, we are reanimating the lost musical DNA of an underground sound that never reached a wide audience, and having a blast doing it (by re-recording, remixing and releasing an amazing songbook of material as a companion soundtrack). Film-wise, weâ€™re 2.5 years in the making and weâ€™ve already completed 2/3 of our planned interviews. Breaking the rules of the typical talking head â€œrockumentaryâ€ â€“ weâ€™re incorporating the use of animation/motion graphics, CGI visualization, social media and other creative digital storytelling techniques to elevate the storyline in contemporary ways.
The right candidate will play a key role in setting the stage to refine and finish the film so this is a great opportunity to be part of an experienced team on the excavation of a dusty gem of a narrative. This position is non-paid (though we will cover working production meals, pre-approved necessary expenses) and will provide you with valuable experience and connections.
Qualifications & Responsibilities:
â€¢ This is the ideal project for an MBA with a passion for the arts. Someone who wants to use their professional business (and or marketing) skills outside of work to help bring a film through post-production, fundraising, and see it distributed to national/international festivals, Netflix, Amazon, cable/satellite, etc.
â€¢ Strong prior knowledge of Microsoft Project or other web-based project management tools (Basecamp or similar.)
â€¢ You will work with the filmâ€™s Producer to manage timelines, deliverables, set milestones and hold people to reaching them. Great organizational and detail skills a must!
â€¢ Commitment to a minimum of 1 to 2 days per week on a part-time basis (starting immediately)
â€¢ MUST be NYC-area based and able to attend meetings with producer, director, assistant editors and archivist.
â€¢ Interest in music as a force for social change, progressive politics, multiple genres of music (e.g. – jazz, rock, afrobeat/afro-pop, funk, dub/reggae, post-punk, etc.) â€“ helpful, wouldn't hurt –- but not necessary.
