Gerhard M. was an amateur photographer sent to the Eastern Front as a German soldier. He took along a camera to record his combat experiences as he and his unit marched into the Soviet Union. With a special focus on Documentary, there are several films for audiences interested in exploring non-fiction film.
HOLD ME TIGHT, LET ME GO, is a must see for anybody who works or is looking to work with children with behaviour problems or film students interested in Documentary making. This observational documentary by famed director Kim Longoniotto looks at a boarding school in Oxford for excluded children who suffer severe emotional trauma.
RETURN TO GOREE is a lively documentary following the journey of Senegalese singer Youssou Nâ€™Dour as he traces the history of music from West Africa to countries of the African Diaspora. The film interweaves history, music and investigative documentary styles in an accessible and fascinating portrait.
Director Nick Broomfield again crosses the line between fiction and documentary with his film BATTLE FOR HADITHA, which re-creates the events of a battle between US-Marines and Iraqi civilians in 2005. Renowned for his maverick documentary-practices, Broomfield here uses the fiction genre but his employ of non-professional actors and real situations make for an interesting discussion of blurring fiction/non-fiction boundaries.
All films are facilitated by an education professional and will include Q & A with the director or specialist speaker.

London International Documentary Festival 2008

PocketVisions is calling for film submissions for the expanded London International Documentary Festival (LIDF) - A Conversation in Film, 2008. The festival is presented in association with the London Review of Books, and with the support of the British Museum. 2008 sees a continued association with The Margaret Mead Film and Video Festival (New York).
The LIDF will run for 6 days between Monday 31st March, and Saturday, April 5th, 2008. The opening and closing night gala screenings and reception will take place at the British Museum. Other venues include the Barbican Centre, the Curzon Soho, the Renoir Cinema and the Roxy Bar and Screen.
The call for submissions goes out to an international field of applicants. All successful applicants will be invited to be present at the LIDF. We are looking to support new and innovative filmmaking talent, and to ask filmmakers to participate in a series of intertwining â€˜conversationsâ€™ to be run alongside the screenings. These â€˜conversationsâ€™ will involve academics, journalists, policy-makers, NGOs, and other cultural commentators.
The LIDF is calling for documentary films produced between January 1st 2006 and December 6th 2007, and is particularly, although not exclusively, interested in films that fall within the following categories:
* Human Rights
* Heritage and the Arts
* Other social and development issues
Submission Procedure: Film-makers can enter their films, pay entry fees and find out how to submit their DVD or VHS preview copy at http://www.lidf.co.uk
Once the on-line submission has been made entrants will receive a confirmation email and a unique Entry Reference Number.
Deadline for Submissions: 6th December 2007
Late entries accepted until 30th December with penalty (see regulations). Films can only be returned if the â€˜return feeâ€™ is included in the submission.
Selected films from the LIDF will be automatically submitted for selection to the Margaret Mead Film and Video Festival, November 2008.
