This month, we will screen a rough cut of "Miracle on 42nd Street" by Alice Elliot. The film documents the unique apartment complex called Manhattan Plaza located in Manhattanâ€™s historic theatre district, a neighborhood also known as Hellâ€™s Kitchen. Located on the block between 42nd and 43rd Streets, it is often called the â€œMiracle on 42nd Streetâ€ due to the near-miraculous effect the complex has had on the once-blighted neighborhood and on the lives of its residents. Seventy percent of the occupants work in the performing arts and thirty percent are Hellâ€™s Kitchen residents who are elderly, disabled or have been relocated from substandard housing. The film tells the story of how this innovative affordable housing experiment came to be, the artists it has nurtured, the close community its residents and management have created and the positive impact it has had on the economy of Manhattanâ€™s West Side. By making this film, the filmmakers want to tell the story of the pioneering people, community leaders, government and business people who joined together to resurrect a blighted neighborhood. Producer Mary Jo Slater was an original tenant of Manhattan Plaza. As a working single mother, she was able to launch a successful career as an award-winning casting director while also supporting the career of her son, actor Christian Slater.
Producer Nancy Perkins lived in Manhattan Plaza in the 1980s along with her actor husband, Ron Perkins, where she began a successful career in casting, rising to become head of casting at Universal Television Studios for fourteen years.
Editor/Producer Lisa Shreve has lived in Manhattan Plaza since the building opened and resides there today, working as an editor of award-winning documentary and narrative films.
Producer Erika Lockridge of Bahr Productions has joined on as a producer because of her belief in the Manhattan Plaza concept of affordable housing.
Producer Cindy Cowan is currently producing the feature "Red Lights" (starring Robert DeNiro).
Our moderator will be Caitlin Boyle. A leading champion of grassroots and community distribution for independent films, Boyle is the architect of national screening and audience outreach initiatives for dozens of feature documentaries, including "King Corn," "Pray the Devil Back to Hell," "The End of the Line," "A Small Act" and "Bag It." Hello filmmakers! My nonprofit is launching a new short (very short... 5 min. and less) film competition on the topic of mental health. The winning film will be used in our education, advocacy and field-building work on college campuses and nonprofits around the U.S., plus win $1,000 award for future work.
I hope some of you will consider putting something together for this. The quality of the work will really determine the caliber of nonprofit partners we can attract, and I know we've got some heavyweights on this list! We already have some pretty major players (national NGOs) interested in using the films in their work – assuming it's well done. In many ways this is about using your film to create positive change through dialogue.

Regarding the ad above, I"m curios as to what other people think about this. Although it does seem like an interesting contest, from what I can tell after reading their rules/regulations, it appears that basically by entering the contest you are forfeiting any right to your concept and material and that A&E can basically take whatever they want and don't owe you anything for it. So by doing this contest, they potentially get the rights to thousands of concepts and only have to pay $10,000 to a winner who will be able to "participate" in the production of a pilot but also, from what I can tell, will actually not have any right to their concept.
There are many "contests" like this, Greg. Many people still submit.
Also, when one submits cold to Discovery, for instance, you basically have to sign something similar before anyone will look at your stuff. From their point of view, they get thousands of submissions, many for ideas that look pretty similar to each other, and would rather be protected from what they see as reasonable-looking, but actually not, stolen ideas. Particularly if the submitted does not have an industry track record.

LA screenings feature the filmmakers and subjects in attendance. You can buy a single tickets or an all-day pass. It's a heap of fun.

Anyway, we all know the power of a really great doc trailer as a calling-card to open doors and build production teams – so we're looking for a editor / "trailer doctor" in NYC to re-cut our 10min trailer down to less than 3 min (see link to YT). The doc is called "Get It All Out" – and it's a story about the power of a long-lost music songbook to survive decades in the hearts and minds of those who first heard it and made it. It's cross-platform project that includes a feature, an album, an eBook and a 10 piece orchestra (down from 13 last year, due to market conditions).

Wonderful office is available for share. The office is clean and large with wood floors, high ceilings, great natural light and central air conditioning/heat. The building is safe and quiet with lots of friendly, creative neighbors on the floor: doc filmmakers, photographers, etc. Great location, a few blocks from either the 7th Avenue or 15th Street/Prospect Park F stops and lots of great bodegas, cafes, Prospect Park, Celebrate Brooklyn, etc.
Space is available April 1 for short or long term rental. The ideal candidate is someone who works independently or creatively and is not on the phone all day. You'd get a large work space that includes wireless internet, refrigerator and espresso/coffee machine. There is currently an oversized desk, chair and shelves for your use or you can bring your own.

She and I would both like to get her connected to a Native American documentarian for mentoring as she goes. It could be as significant or minimal as anyone is willing to do. She has great craft mentors through the school. And she will have the guidance and advice of several Omaha people. Still, while some of her faculty have made docs with and about Native Americans, none of the Omaha advisers knows anything about filmmaking and none of us has the prospective that an actual Native American might lend her. She'd love to find someone Omaha but will thrilled with anyone who could combine some knowledge of film making with a Native American personal perspective.

Our next DocuClub will take place on Thursday, March 22, 7 p.m. at DCTV, located at 87 Lafayette (at Walker). This month, we will screen a rough cut of Changing Face of Harlem by award-winning filmmaker Shawn Batey. March's DocuClub will be moderated by Marilyn Ness, Arts Engine's Director of Production.
Changing Face of Harlem is a one-hour documentary that examines the revitalization of Harlem told through the deeply personal stories of its residents, small business owners, politicians, developers and clergy. The film takes a critical look at Harlemâ€™s history, early development, and present transformation. Twenty years ago, according to the press, Harlem was a crime-ridden ghetto full of hoodlums and drugs. Though recognized internationally as â€œThe Black Mecca,â€ the historic neighborhood was overlooked for decades. Longtime residents weathered the storm despite the lack of city services and building landlord abandonment. Bank practices of redlining in the 1980â€™s prevented many residents from purchasing turn of the century brownstones within their own blocks. Recently, however Harlem has matured into a prosperous locale for commercial and corporate interests. As New York City exhausts its scarce amount of centrally located prime real estate, it has marketed Harlem as an ideal investment. With this influx of new investment has come a younger, more professional, and affluent class of residents. The film offers fresh perspectives from community members on the pressing issues of class, cultural preservation and sustainability.

Hello! I am looking for a grant writer to help with my film – Star in the RIng – it tells the story of when Jews DOMINATED the sport of boxing. It is a part of Jewish history / American history and sport history, that is all but forgotten.
I am honored to say that I received a grant from The Righteous Persons Foundation.
The ideal grant writer could start with helping me write a two page letter of inquiry that can be tailored to the foundations I have narrowed down. I am part of NYFA – which makes this project have a 501 – c – 3 status. Is anyone in need of audio post production services for their documentaries? I work independently as well as with a world class post production studio called Clatter&Din studios. WORDS OF WITNESS follows a young female journalist navigating historical times in Egypt. It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2012. We are currently gearing up for our US premiere.
A minimum commitment of 3 months is required for all internships 10 hours a week. Candidate should have his/her own laptop. This month, we will screen a rough cut of MEXICAN DREAM. Our moderator will be Vanessa Erazo of New York International Latino Film Festival.
MEXICAN DREAM is about one group of indigenous migrants who change a pastoral but poverty-stricken life in Mexico for a new home in a small meatpacking town in Minnesota. It introduces several families from an impoverished agrarian community in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. It also presents a Midwestern meatpacking town that was at the center of a crushing national defeat of the meatpackerâ€™s union during the Reagan administration, where the Mexican migrants have formed their own community that exists uncomfortably alongside the mostly white population.
A mix of observational documentary and montage with reportage via interviews and several inter-titles shows how the strong sense of community amongst these immigrants perseveres in the U.S. while the anxieties of working class life set in. The social effects on the families of migrants back home are profound. MEXICAN DREAM brings these pressing issues to light and humanizes the denigrated, undocumented â€œillegals.â€ It also discusses how these same anxieties haunt the long time white community. Shot on both sides of the border, it shows the contradictions in many Americansâ€™ ideas about immigration
and how Mexican society has accepted it as a convenient outlet for decades.
About the filmmaker:
Jon Wetterau (Videography/Co-Producer) has worked on documentary productions in various roles in India, Central America and Cameroon. He initiated and photographed ONE COUNTRY, CAMEROON; TWO QUARTIERS. He has directed two other projects in his native Queens, New York City and has a work-in-progress about Americans gentrifying San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
About the moderator:
After having spent several years working for various film festivalsâ€”such as the International Latino Film Festival – San Francisco Bay Area, the International Contemporary Film Festival of Mexico City(FICCO) and the Havana Film Festival New Yorkâ€”in a variety of roles, Vanessa Erazo now acts as the Documentary Programmer at the New York International Latino Film Festival. She has curated films on a wide range of topics such as human rights, autism, sports, adoption and homelessness. Until recently, she served as the Programming Co-chair for the New York chapter of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers.
