Advice to Filmmakers: Reverse Engineer Your Psychobabble. I had the pleasure of having a former psychotherapist in my recent weekend seminar, "Structuring the Character Driven Documentary". When we began our story focusing exercises, he was picked to be the guinea pig. One of the documentary story exercises involves filling out three simple sentences, which provide the skeletal backbone for acts one, two and three.For example, the first sentence reads....
I urge all artists using the CreateSpace fulfillment service to protest their new policy of withholding all purchaser information. Put all of your CreateSpace titles ON HOLD, followed by quitting the company if the policy is not reversed. Immediately seek alternative fulfillment services such as Filmbaby, CDbaby, CCNOW, Kunaki, IODA, Neoflix, and others.
CreateSpace used to be an excellent fulfillment service that does on-demand, one-off duplication of DVDs, CDs, and books, so that artists do not need to maintain inventory of the products they are selling. I have been using and actively advocating this fulfillment service since 2003 (when the name was Customflix). More about me and my films at: http://www.blastthemovie.com/about.html#bio
However, the company was acquired by Amazon a few years ago. Earlier this year, without notice, CreateSpace instituted a new policy that withholds all purchaser information from artists selling on their site. Their position is that people who purchase our products are THEIR customers rather than OUR customers (despite the fact that they do not actively promote OUR products). All purchaser information is withheld because of â€œprivacy issues,â€ even though we may have direct personal relationships with our customers. This represents a profound misunderstanding of the customer relationship.
The new policy prevents artists from building their business around customer relationships and from building community around their titles. It is in direct conflict with the promise of the Internet that our community has been promoting the past few years: bypassing gatekeepers in order to engage directly core audiences, allowing artists to build sustainable businesses around their work. Our economic sustainability as independent artists will be severely threatened if CreateSpaceâ€™s new policy becomes a trend in the industry.
In response, I urge you not only to join me in boycotting CreateSpaceâ€™s service, but to participate in an aggressive, online, social networking campaign to inform colleagues of this new policy, and to encourage CreateSpace to reverse it.
Please respond by posting on relevant forums, blogs, facebook, twitter etc. Make suggestions on where colleagues can post. If you are a CreateSpace customer, make your voice heard on their â€œCommunityâ€ forum, and by directly contacting:

If we succeed, it will be a newsworthy story of our community flexing our social networking muscle. If CreateSpace does not reverse its policy, at least we will have informed our community about the drawbacks of using this service.

Thanks for posting this. There's a lot of aspects to distributing on Amazon through CreateSpace that are ridiculous, like not being able to choose a trailer or even link your DVD listing to your VOD listing.
Do any of the other on-demand services provide a listing through Amazon?

DocuClub in March!
Our March DocuClub will take place on Wednesday, March 24, 7 p.m., at DCTV, located at 87 Lafayette Street (at Walker; take N/R/Q/6 trains to Canal).
We will screen a rough cut of THE LEARNING by Ramona Diaz. American public schools systems today are struggling to meet the federal No Child Left Behind Actâ€™s (NCLB) requirement of highly qualified teachers in every classroom. Nowhere is the teacher shortage more pronounced than in mathematics and the sciences. Consequently, a significant number of urban school districts across the country have begun hiring foreign teachers, with the Philippines – because of its surplus of education majors, American-based education system, and English-speaking population – emerging as a recruitment hub.
The film follows four Filipino teachers as they take their place on the frontline of the No Child Left Behind Act, chronicling the sacrifices they make as they try to maintain a long-distance relationship with their children and families, and begin a new one with the mostly African-American students whose schooling is now entrusted to them. While the story of women who care for other womenâ€™s children is timeless and universal, the experience of the Filipino teachers is an especially contemporary example of the economic exodus of women from poor countries. But as they take on a function of daily American life, they also step into a position of subtle power. For each generation of teachers, regardless of where they come from, influences the education, values, and economic prospects of a new generation of Americans.
THE LEARNING is funded by ITVS, the Center for Asian American Media, and the Sundance Documentary Fund.
Producer/Director Ramona Diaz is a Filipino-American filmmaker whose credits include IMELDA (Sundance, IDFA, LAFF, True/False, IDA Award) a full-length documentary about the former First Lady of the Philippines. The documentary was released theatrically in the United States and the Philippines, screened in over fifty film festivals around the world, and was broadcast on Independent Lens in May 2005. Diaz also directed and produced SPIRITS RISING (Student Academy Award, Ida Lupino DGA Award, IDA Certificate of Merit), a film about womenâ€™s role in the 1986 People Power revolution in the Philippines. She is currently in post-production on DONâ€™T STOP BELIEVINâ€™: EVERYMANâ€™S JOURNEY, a feature length documentary film about the iconic 80â€™s band, Journey, and their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda, whom they discovered through YouTube.
Editor Leah Marino has completed numerous documentary features that have aired nationally. Most recently, she did work on PORTRAIT OF WALLY about a painting seized from the Museum of Modern Art in NYC because of a Holocaust dispute. She completed THE CREEK RUNS RED, about an environmental super-fund site in Oklahoma, which aired on Independent Lens. Marino also edited Diazâ€™s IMELDA, which won numerous awards including one at Sundance and at the IDA.
Cinematographer Gretchen Hildebran filmed THE LEARNING and contributed to Joan Bradermanâ€™s THE HERETICS. She is also producing and shooting THE BRONX IS HERE TO STAY, which examines the fires that destroyed much of New York in the 1970s. Her documentaries include the internationally screened CARVE (2003) and WORTH SAVING (2004), which was presented in HBOâ€™s Frame by Frame documentary showcase and received Best of the Fest at the 2006 International Conference for Reducing Harm.
Cinematographer Gabriel Goodenough began his career as a camera assistant on narrative feature film and television projects such as A BEAUTIFUL MIND, THE SOPRANOS, THE WEST WING, OZ and HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS, and advanced to the position of camera operator on the HBO series UNSCRIPTED. He has served as the Director of Photographer or Camera Operator on a variety of projects for outlets including The Learning Channel, Discovery Television and PBS.
Our moderator will be Betty Yu, a longtime community-based media maker, educator and organizer who is currently the Director of Community Outreach and Media at Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN), Manhattan's Community Access TV organization in New York City. At MNN, she provides media making tools and resources to community based organizations through video production training and a Community Media Grants program. RESILIENCE, Yuâ€™s film chronicling her garment worker mother's fight against sweatshops, was shown at the Margaret Mead Film and Video Festival. In 2007, she was selected for the National Rockwood Fellowship in Media, Communications and Information Policy. In addition, she has served on the boards of Working Films, a social documentary film organization and the North Star Fund, a progressive foundation that supports grassroots social justice organizing work. This year, Yu joined the Board of the New York Film and Video Council, a 60 year-old organization serving the independent film and video community.
Also present will be Sweet Tooth of the Tiger, which is part d.i.y. food service project and part participatory art project that uses sugar as a medium and explores eating as social practice. Taking the form of a bake sale table, STOT makes an effort to help artists raise money for creative projects by presenting delicious and creative baked goods for a suggested donation. The Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival's early submission deadline is fast approaching!!
The American Museum of Natural Historyâ€™s Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival is the longest-running showcase for international documentaries in the United States. The Mead Fest considers documentary films and videos (including shorts, experimental films, essay films, animation, and new media) only. Productions must have been completed within the last three years.
There are two ways of submitting your work to the Festival:
1. Mail us your film along with an entry form. All forms and guidelines can be downloaded from the web site at: http://www.amnh.org/programs/mead/submit/

I stumbled upon the "One Chicago, One Nation" film contest recently and it looks like a really cool social action through film project.
A number of nonprofits joined together to ask filmmakers to submit short videos about inter-faith and multicultural communities working together to break down stereotypes and promote greater understanding among diverse groups.
They're giving away $50k in prizes, with $20,000 for the grand prize.
However, I wish I found this earlier. Apparently the contest ends at the end of April :(

I am an online editor/colorist in New York and have had the pleasure of working on many documentaries from the D Word community. Here in the second decade of the millennium the post world has changed. While it is more complicated than ever to finish a film, especially in HD, budgets have all come down. Well, so have prices in post facilities. You might be surprised at the budgets we can work with. I'd be happy to offer D Word members a break. Hey Randy, the preview looks pretty awesome. I'm in a similar boat, doing a doc and doing scoring (with a bit of metal influence too). The music fills in the tone nicely. It tells me you are bringing us closer to his ideas, at least in spirit. Not in an absurd way, but a respectful way. That really came through for me. I like weird subjects like this too. Cheers.
