Hi guys,

I work for film training organisation Initialize Films and I just wanted to let you know about two new (London-based) doumentary courses we're running in the new year:

Insider's Guide to... Making an Award-Winning Documentary:

This one-day guide is for documentary filmmakers and producers who want to understand how to develop, package, finance, direct and distribute an award-winning documentary.

The course will be led by filmmaker and producer Geoffrey Smith, who recently made THE ENGLISH SURGEON, which has been shown in over 40 international festivals, and has a theatrical release scheduled in the US, Spain and Poland. Geoffrey has also made several award-winning documentaries for the BBC and C4.

The course will take place on 31 Jan 2009 in Bloomsbury, London, and costs £85 + VAT. To register please see www.initialize-films.co.uk

Project Development Course – Narrative Strategies for Feature Docs

Initialize Films Project Development Course on Narrative Strategies for Feature Docs gives feedback for 6 documentary filmmakers / producers on their projects over the course of 8 evening sessions starting on Thursday 15 January 2009.

During the course we will analyse popular narrative strategies for successful feature documentaries and workshop these strategies with each participant’s project.

Initialize has a strong track record as story / script consultants, helping writers, filmmakers and producers refine their projects and assisting them in getting development and production finance (including the BBC’s Storyville).

The course costs £195 (+ VAT). All sessions take place from 19.00 to 21.00 in Holborn, London. To book please see www.initialize-films.co.uk

Karen, I've had the pleasure of meeting Geoffrey on various occasions, most notably in Kosovo, so I'd like to say that he's a very thoughtful and very honest guy and I'm sure his course will be great.

Hello All, and Merry Christmas:

I just wanted to introduce myself and get my name out there to this community. If anyone in the New York area is need of administrative, research, or production support as they gear up for new projects after the new year, please get in touch.

I am an aspiring producer looking for work as a production assistant. I have extensive documentary internship experience, a strong background in foreign affairs research and advocacy, and experience as an administrative assistant as well.

I am proficient with FCP and Photoshop, comfortable assisting on location, and used to being ask to do just about everything. An all around executer (with a sense of humor, of course)!

CURRENT RESUME ATTACHED.

I'm seeking an assistant editor in the D.C. area to help translate footage for my film DELTA BOYS

The material is in Okrika an Ijaw dialect of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The footage is very interesting, filmed in a Niger Delta militant camp.

I haven't been able to find Okrika translators in New York, but it looks like there are some in the D.C. area. The work would involve sitting with the translator, going through the footage in Final Cut, and typing in the translation.

You don't need to be a master editor, but must be Final Cut savvy and quick and have access to a system.

This a paid gig depending on your experience.

We have some offices coming up for sub-lease in our suite of indies. We're in mid-town Manhattan, west side, right next to the bus terminal, in a landmark building with fabulous views. Each office is individually locked. We share a meeting area, copier, fax, frig, hot/cold water dispenser--and try to help each other when called on. It is a friendly atmosphere, perfect for filmmakers or others connected to what we do.
We're looking to sub-lease through the end of our lease at the end of July 2010.
1. One office will be available March 1. It has three large windows, high ceilings, carpet, comes furnished or not. It easily can fit three work stations. Rent is 1,800.
2. Another two offices, directly adjacent to each other, can be available sooner. Each has two large windows, high ceilings, carpet, furnished or not. Each can easily fit two work stations. Rent both for 1,875.
